[Dev Journal] Aion: New Zones = Extreme Dangers

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

MMORPG.com has teamed up with NCSoft and the Aion developers to bring our readers a first ever look at three new zones coming with Aion v4.0. These three are gorgeous to behold but pack a lot of danger for unwary Daevas. Read up on the lore and get a good look at the new areas before heading to the comments.

Katalam was originally occupied by an ancient race known as the Danuar.  After the Cataclysm, Tiamat invaded Katalam in an attempt to gain even greater power by acquiring a deadly Danuar Hyperion weapon.  While she succeeded in occupying Katalam, she failed to harness the weapon’s power.  Failure to properly fuel the weapon contaminated the surrounding areas, mutating the creatures in Katalam with Ide, the weapon’s power source.  Desperate to reclaim their lands, the Danuar attempted to repel the Tiamat legion.  However, they made a fatal mistake by detonating one of their weapons, which resulted in the ancient people’s demise.

kind of hard to get super excited about an expansion when the 15th word in the description is cataclysm. gunner looks cool though, but I doubt i'll get it fully leveled.

So we're going back to Nexus?

LFD tools are great for cramming people into content, but quality > quantity.
I am, usually on the sandbox .. more "hardcore" side of things, but I also do just want to have fun. So lighten up already :)

This game is fun but it needs some new classes and starting points. Oh, imho. You have to say "imho" or you will be skin flayed by other forum members.

Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.

Huh? GW2 has additional monthly content at the least. I'm sure it isn't free to make. Nice try though.

Please, have you seen the content yourself? Its just re-using models and spamming simple low budget skinning on one zone.

If you compare that to the goodness we got when the game was "fresh" and a lot of money was being pumped towards it for good few months during and after the launch, what we get now is laughable.

-To clarify, arenanet doesnt get their share of the money that is being generated by their game, it goes to other titles such as WildStar which is the new shiny cow of NCSoft, and Aion with HUGE playerbase in asia. (Note: NCsoft is asian company over anything else)

You do realize 4.0 has been out in Korea for months, right? GW2 revenue has nothing to do with this, AION makes a shit ton of money in Korea, that's why we're getting these updates.

IT's been said there were new classes on 4.0 long ago.

And there realy is no point to new starting areas when there are only two factions..

If Aion is so huge, shouldn't it be making it's own money? On another note, if GW2 is bringing in tons of money, shouldn't they want to use some of it to improve GW2? Last I checked GW2 does have a rather gigantic live team, clearly they are spending something on it.

Either way your comments make no sense. Use the successful games money to fund the unsuccessful one, or use the less successful game's money to fund the bigger game.

Replayability is a huge reason to have more starting points. It gets old doing the same quests again.  It is one of the reasons I personally don't start the game over, and I'm sure it is for many others. WoW only has two factions also, and it has many starting points along with many other mmorpgs. Just because you are locked in on two races doesn't mean the classes can't start somewhere else.

This far along after a games release, most developers have to let go of quite a bit of their staff. Arenanet has stayed up to staff since release. That being said, the staff isn't sitting around watching Defiance on the television, so they must be doing something. Somewhere along the line they have to pay the employees, right? Someone out their is liking the "fresh"ness enough to be buying things off of the cash shop or they would let people go.

I could only stomach the first 3 episodes before taking it off the DVR. Did it get better ?

On a more serious note, while Anet has said not working on an expansion, NCSoft has noted one was incoming. That may or may not explain the staffing.

Well I don't really understand why you're comparing to wow which has two factions and several races to a game that has only two factions with the same core  race.. what other mmorpgs have done this? and I'm legit asking, not trying to argue.

i agree with the many above who say the game needs more starting zones.  this is true of both this game and rift; in fact i think these teo games would see a bigger spike of players from a new newb zone than they would for a new class /soul.

games are still quite good tho :)

Did someone say PAY 2 WIN felliciatous socketing? once upon a good grinder IMHO, BUT this game is one of my top definitions of pay to win where gear is greater than player skill and the best enchanted gear is payed for with ur wallet. This game really gives the impression that NC soft supports gold spam and farmers and IF i was into conspiracies i would say that the gold farmers actually work for NC soft in this game lol........such a shame had some really good times in this grinder back in the day

I wanted to dismiss all the 'badmouthing' at first, then I realized that new starting zones are the thing that I need in this game, so I have to agree. (Rare moment for me not to stay stubborn and defend something not-so-good-anymore.)
