I don't think it's fair to compare these two games. They're like apples and oranges. It would be more accurate to compare EnB to WoW or EQ2 (EnB was more like an EQ in space to me). I played EnB from birth to sunset. Admittedly I left a couple times to try new games (due to lack of content from the WW move and lack of support for new content from EA) but I always came back to EnB. I beta'd EvE and even played after launch. But EvE just wasn't FUN. I really missed the player interaction which EvE has none of. The only interaction in that game is in your corp and there's nothing in that game you can do solo for very long. EvE is a really good game, it's just not for everyone (including me). If you haven't tried it, I'd recommend you give the free trial a go and find out for yourself. The graphocs are really cool image But I don't think it's fair to compare EvE to EnB either. I'm STILL looking for my replacement for EnB. I've tried EQ2, WoW, EvE, COH, etc. etc. God I'd kill for a game without trolls or dwarfs or elves - where I didn't have to fight dragons or go on 3 hour, 20-man raid groups to get cool gear - where I could group with a few friends and go have some fun. Maybe that's why I liked EnB so much image

Sorry but that's a joke. The storylines in Eve are laughable. 99% of the "storyline" missions are absent of the storyline and have no point or effect at all. Right now the big part of the game is a "cold war". Of course there is nothing anywhere to tell how it became a cold war or why it's a cold war. In game the only changes were a few gate changes.
Eve has a lot of good aspects. Storylines, npcs, and missions are not in those good parts.

Actually if you read the chronicles, or keep up with the in-game news it explains the cold war, and also explains why certain routes have been changed, etc.  That and most of the storyline is player created.  Currently I can give you a run-down of my own storyline if you'd like.  I haven't done any storyline missions, when I get them I ignore them because the npc missions suck.  I do missions for my player run corp and alliance.

If you can't handle making your own storyline, then you should play something else.

Point of fact (Mind you, I agree that EVE is the better game):
When E&B closed both games had been experiencing very slow but very steady *growth*
At the time of it's closure E&B had almost identical subscriber numbers as EVE

I think, given those two simple facts the honest answer is:
The games were *different* but both were fun games, to different sets of players.

When EA closed E&B down EVE benefited greatly from THOUSANDS of E&B players moving over to EVE because, while the games aren't the same, they are very similar in many aspects. That, and, there are no other space MMORPG's quite like them. Darkspace isn't well known, and wasn't at that time either, so they didn't benefit much, if at all, from E&B's closure. Not to mention the fact that CCP very wisely offered all E&B customers free copies of the game and I believe even waived a certain chunk of billing time for monthly fees. I am not sure about that though.

Bottom line: When E&B was announced to be closed, it had just as many subscribers as EVE did. Difference: CCP stuck by their game and EA couldn't care less about theirs. Not the first major MMO EA cancelled for unknown reasons either. Multiplayer Battletech got cancelled just before release (literally less than a month or two prior to release) for no reason whatsoever that was given. Speculation is that it was a licence dispute with Micro$oft but that would have been silly. With the BattleTech name the game was guaranteed to be a success. And the open beta proved it. Tens of thousands of people played MPBT during it's final days of beta. Easily enough to make the game very profitable at release.

I never even heard of E&B till I was already playing Eve. Looking at screenshots, it looks cartoony and I wouldn't play it if Eve closed down.

I'm sorry, I've been waiting my whole life for a dark serious sim and this is it.

Eve is not a game. It is a space sim. A game takes you by the hand, Eve just give you the universe and backstory and you build your own adventure.

Eve has no endgame. There's a backstory but it's written in cooperation with the players. When they advance the storyline, it features actual players in the game. Like when they had Ushra'Khan escorting a defecting Caldari scientist. Or when Kaleigh Doyle was running for President of the Gallente Federation. Those are actual regular players that pay their monthly fee.

You think being in a raid that slays a dragon is a power trip? Try becoming the leader of a 2000+ man Alliance. Our Alliance leader (Cyvok) is an ex-E&B player, and he runs the alliance with military power of hundreds of ships.

Or how about SirMolle, currently the leader of the most powerful alliance in the game.

Or Istvaan Shogatsu, perpetrator of the biggest theft in Eve History, something like 30 billion isk worth of ships, blueprints, cash, and assets.

You gonna tell me that's somehow BORING or NOT FUN?

    You're out of your MIND.

I love when I come into a sector, people consider jumping out just by seeing my corp name, they know they might get f*cked up. I love that lots of people heard of me, that I've cultivated a reputation. The community is only about 80 or 100k strong, so almost everybody who has played long enough has some sort of reputation good or bad, people say "hey I know you, you used to be in XXX corp.." the social aspect is a total trip.

But the best thing I like is. If you run your mouth and get stupid, I can hunt you down, or put money on your head.

That's what keeps othr games juvenile and stupid, theres no consequences.

In Eve, saying a kind greeting can save your life. It can get you into a powerful corp that can take your game to new heights. And saying an unkind word will get you killed, and will get your corporation into a war. So smart people band together with other smart people. As the game's learning curve filters out the lackwits, they leave the game, making it much better, which accounts for the extreme high quality of the community.

Why do people keep trying to compare EVE to other games? Its like trying to take a crap with your pants on it might feel good in the begining, but sooner or later people are gonna make fun of you. image

I play EVE and really enjoy it.

Has anyone ever tried Mankind?  It was around before both EVE and EnB.

Nothing against eve. I can see how the heavy player interaction would attract some players.
Its just not fun for me, and for alot of people who play it, I dont think its "fun" for them either.
Don't get me wrong I think eve players ENJOY their time on eve but I don't think they had fun.
    Thats what Enb was, fun.
Also it may be argued that enb was a massivley multiplayer online single player game.
I dont care, I love enb....
    Fight the power.....

I believe exactually what is written above!!! In every aspect. EnB was my first online game and after playing many others i still havn't found anything that compares to it. If it comes back as a rebirth or a brand new game, i'll definitely give it a go.

Along with its extreme level of smugness, patronizing superiority, arrogance, and close-mindness.

(And if this is what it looks like on forums that just discuss the game, I'd hate to see what it's like deep in-game.  Seriously you guys need to lighten up, or you'll become like fans of Australian Rules Football, avid, rabid, fans of a game that only 0.05% (EDIT: I meant to put 0.5% here, about 40,000,000 people) of the world have even heard of, and for EVE the percentage is far far less...sorry to burst your bubble...but very few people care.  For me watching this is a study in closed communities breeding hatred...haha...real social comment!  Entertaining!)

Hadz? do you have something with EVE? Really man, you should go outside and meet a pretty girl who gives you know what, instead of coming to the EVE forum just to say "what a pityful community you have here". Man.

"fans of a game that only 0.05% of the world have even heard of, and for EVE the percentage is far far less...sorry to burst your bubble...but very few people care."

    Well, you care xD

EVE has got many features no other mmo has. I've been playing it for some months. I've seen every kind of people playing it, but truly (and I'm sorry Hadz, for what I'm going to say) all the people i found "disgusting" has left sooner or later xD

Some people say EVE is boring, some others say it's slow. Well, after almost 7 months of playing, I can't say I don't like it's rythm. Soon I'll be getting a Covetor, and in a few weeks a Battleship, in one month I'll be able to pilot a Freighter. The next expansion will have a lot of new and interesting features (which are listed in the official webpage, and you can look up). After 3 years CCP still cares of what their players want in the game (the beta server is always on testing new features to come). Reading other forums i can't say the same for other games (SWG? XD)

BTW, 0,05% of the world means 3500000 people (i think more than 3500k people know it, but you seem to know more about that). Well, I prefer playing with the 0,000002% of the world and have fun, that be with 0,000006% (splited in 20 servers) playing "i kill you, you kill me, he kills that thing, we all laugh, how mighty our manhood is, look at my hackmaster +20, i kill you with the mere vision of it, my pennis is bigger" (you know, that thing hanging between men's legs)
Never seen that in EVE, where you can block other's tail xD

PD: I don''t think EVE's learning curve is, in fact, too "vertical". In an afternoon you'll learn all the basics. In two days you can be at 0.0 hauling some arkonor.

Hadz seems to be very foucused on trying to blame us for not wanting to run the maze with the rest of the rats like he does. I guess despite our best efforts we have still not managed to get into his head the fact that we do not care if the game is not the most popular main stream item out there. Its what we like, and its fun so quit bugging us about how crappy our game is and crawl back into the hole you came out of.

Guys...I don't have anything against EVE (I don't think it's great...but again that's not been my issue).  READ MY POST!

I said the EVE community should take a good hard look at itself.  And realize that by slamming the people who don't play the game (or leave it quickly) as lackwits, mazerunners, WoW-kiddies...blah blah blah...etc, you are making yourselves look like losers with a huge inferiority complex who have to PUT DOWN other people to make yourselves feel better about the game you're playing.  (It's either that or some sort of megalomaniacal superiority complex, which may fit EVE better, as you all seem to believe you can rule the galaxy or something.)

Why don't YOU all get THAT into your massive-EVE-playing-brains, instead of trying to tell me I have something against EVE.  image

It makes me sick just reading most of your backslapping EVE-propagandist posts where you constantly insult non-players of your game.  (EDIT: And I'm mainly talking about what's been said in the general forums, not even in here)  In fact, if I wasn't forced in here (by the mods moving my post) I would have NEVER even bothered to enter this section of the forums, and don't worry, I'm leaving...so you won't have me raining on your mutual admiration society.  (Waits for the cries of good riddance...blah blah...etc.)

    Have fun...and have at it.

    Earth and beyond really sucked

I voted and I was there playing the game.

I hade lots of fun   I respected Westwood studios for there creation and the idea of ENB

Most hardcore ENBs are now hardcore EVE players ( we all know them :)    )

CCP EVE Online was not doing a version of Enb LOL    EvE Online are based on a very old

    game "ELITE"

However ENB dont have a chance against EvE Online   ( that said  I still "nearly cry when I think of my time in ENB was fun got alot of friends I still keep in close contact )

EvE just got "one" little thing I miss

    Where's my fucking "body" `????

Their is one problem with your assumption. That we actually care what other people think. The whole fundamental basis of EVE is that it is different than all the other games. You know the ones were you run through the pre-ordained path set by the devs just like everyone else. I think the Dev's over at Star Wars Galaxies learned this leason the hard way when they took their unique skill based 100% player driven economy and turned it into a poor buggy clone of WOW. The result? An estimated 90-95% of the population left. Just goes to show we are not the only hard core rabid ones around here their are more of us out there! Anyways as too your thread getting moved into the EVE forums ummm that was What a Joke thread not this one.

Hey it happens to be the truth. I freakin played WoW and LIKED it. Heck sometimes I pay for a month and play it still.

But the community there sucks a big one. People are greedy and nasty to each other.

Here they're a little highbrow, but at least you can get a decent conversation out of em. I can't tell you how many times you meet someone and end up holding a 4 hour conversation, I've made friends with people who I consider RL buddies now, just by getting invited to a gang, or a corp. I met some guy while mining, he invited me to their gang, we ganged for a few days, then I got invite to a corp, corp got invite to alliance, and I just kept meeting more and more cool peeps.

I've made a couple friends in WoW but its so hard to talk to people there. Its like everybody just hop around doing backflips and on to get their next +20 sword. My mentality is I'm trying to enjoy a slow dungeon grind, and this group I'm in wants to bring their level 60 buddy to power us through so we can get xxx goodie. I just want to enjoy the damn instance, and if something nice drops then so be it.

But its inevitable because you have to keep going back to the same instance over and over and over till you get the goodie.

The way I see it both WoW and Eve have boring grind, but the WoW grind is worse, its the same dungeon over and over and you will never see the groupies again. In Eve the grind is camping a gate, or mining, at least you can be social, can talk on teamspeak, you end up getting a satisfaction from the boring grind.

Try it you will see. The community maybe a little picky but its a great community, alot of ppl are really nice.

Community in eve is really AWESOME, they're always there to back you up, very approachable and friendly...EVE is really the BEST mmog!!!<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> imageimageimage
