I use to play SWG, hybird classes and very intense crafting. Of course that is all gone now. So I am looking for another game with these characteristics. Any suggestions ?

Very true. It must be admitted, not to the extent SWG had (SWG's crafting, in particular, sounded fascinating; I'm sorry I never got a chance to experience it), but it probably beats anything left out there. And, on the bright side, FFXI has actual *content*, which puts it one up on SWG.
BTW, anyone notice that FFXI got onto the "top games" poll on the front page? Go us! :-)

Many people believe Horizons has the best crafting of any game. The crafting is very well done. Plus it allows you to change between classes on the same character. The graphics are outdated, the combat is horrible but the community s very nice. Horizons doe shave hybrid classes as well. ALmost every game does. I believe Horizons has a 14 day free trial.
If your looking for a game in development with in depth crafting Vanguard is where to look. Construction and building and a promise that crafting will be just as important as adventuring. Chronicles, Conan and DnL also promise crafting with city building. But Vanguards looks to be the most in depth. Vanguard Crafters is probably the best source of Vanguard crafting information.
ballpark figure, how many people play ffxi? it's not usually one of the more talked-about games. not flaming, just curious. i've always been a big FF fan, but didn't think there'd be much pull to the game.

Quite a few. The last figures on MMOGchart (which are admittedly getting pretty old, however, I don't have a better source to consult) shows it number 4 after WoW and Lineage I & II, with 650,000 subscribers and still rising steadily. At this point, FFXI has more players than EQ did at its peak.
I' ll have to agree with Rushin; Saga of Ryzom might fall into your liking. No classes present and there are no limitations on how many of the available skills you would want to progress in. The crafting system is very deep, based on harvestable and quartered materials which offers a lot of customization. There has been a few SWG guilds that moved over completely last time I checked.
DAOC doesn't have the best crafting out there but it does have very good crafting, especially on the classic servers. I like it's skill system better than FFXI or Ryzom though. FFXI is too linear and Ryzom is too limiting.

Um, linear? You must have played a different FFXI than I do...I am currently pursuing--levelling my main job, finding my RSE gear, levelling several crafts, getting a taste of Ballista. On the back burner until I'm ready is doing my nation missions, doing my Promathia missions, several rather involved quests, trying my hand at BCNMs (I have two full stacks of beastmen's seals so far0. And I'm only level 30; things don't *really* fan out until I get near 50...
I play FFXI... I'll admit FFXI does have a rather deep 'crafting' system. But the "material gathering" methods which is just as significant, is largely coorporation/abused by dubious players and methods. Not to mention the "High Quality" system. It effectively kills new crafters chances to make any profit in the game. Going back on what I said about synth materials, there are very few points which you can gather certain materials, and those few places (if the item is worth anything(you get a lot of junk to synth that isnt worth anything, unless you can HQ, which is determined by skill level) is farmed by gil-farmers or big game HNMLS's, such as ore, or hides that drop exclusively off some massive beasts. 24/7 Gil-farmers with bots camping one mining point in Gusgen(one of the few mining areas), and so on. Crafting in FFXI is an "end game" activity, its considered a money sink and it's not easily accesible with new players.
It's possible, but if you're a glutton for punishment. Not to mention its archaic level grind. Heh... wonder why I still play it... oh yeah great stories.
The one game I found to have a great crafting out there was SWG, but that was when the game first came out, I was a Droid Engineer/Pistoleer. DEs were... kind of the red headed crafting job but, the system was fun. Gathering was fun, with harvesters/surveying. Don't know how it is now after 2 years but... if you're leaving then that must mean its only good feature is gone.
Also playing WoW, crafting is doable while you level up, gathering resources is fun sometimes. But it seems to be too easy. Also lacks the hybrid classes you want also.

Silky Venom's Book Of Oloh has a lot of good info on the combat and mechanics of Vanguard. http://www.silkyvenom.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1893
