well after perusing forums and having gone through eq, eq2 ac2 ao and horizons not to mention a few betas.. i settled on ffxi for a try .. i was excited.. seemed like a wise choice... however...
the game is basically a console port over and UNLESS you have spent the last couple of years playing consoles then the game is counterintuitive, making it, in my case virtually unplayable.. now sure you can say i didnt stick it out and give it a chance and you would be right.. this is not a flame its one mans opinion...
1) key commands (especially movement) are for all practical purposes unbindable
2) cant resize or customize the GUI
3) 30 minutes into the game ran into a bug that prevented me from doing anything other then cycling questions to the mog room keeper.. had to force a reboot...)
suffice it to say this was enough to cause me to quit/delete .. call me impatient or whatever you feel like, ultimately its not important... imo, i think unless you play with a gamepad and can overcome the intial confusion fomented by language barriers and a lack of customization, youre best looking elsewhere.. its a shame really as ive been reading, this is the closest to verant's eq1 that is available and as many feel that was as good as its gotten so far...
cheers!
jehu
*edit* i think this was a hasty assessment on my part.. was a bad morning .. i'm going to try and get my gamepad functioning and give it another fair shot.. heh

Yeah, I had the same problem with room keeper, then I realized that you could scroll the list of options and at the bottom is the option to just move on.
The ui is rough, but I found that everyone I ask a question of helped me. Which was only 3, the 3rd invited me to a party and walked me around town and into combat outside the city. It was a great communtiy experience. I sorry you had a hard time, the language barrier never raised it's head for me. I did have trouble with UI at first, and the Config you need to run to set graphics, I didnt see at until I read the manuel. But that was all last night, my first time online in FFXI. I learned a great deal about the game, and would help with any question you have that I can answer.
