Animation Sliding not being fixed?

RyshaRysha Member Posts: 11

Is it true that the devs are calling the sliding on ground animation working as intended?

The game looks great (although some textures not so much, especially grass or trees), but the sliding is really ruining it for me at the moment.

For those that don't know, using a skill and then moving produces a really awkward animation of your character sliding over the ground.

Also turning in place or using right mouse button for camera when moving didn't seem too great to me either.

Anyway, have they posted to address these issues?

They said it's to keep the player from being animation locked. Otherwise if you're fighting a boss and you just start an animation and the boss does something and you need to move, you have to wait for the animation to end.

If this is the case I prefer it over animation lock, I HATE animation lock.

GW2 has a similar issue at times especially after using an ability like Blink where your character teleports like 900 units in an instant. To clear it in GW2, you simply jump or use another animation (like swinging a weapon) to clear the stuck animation.

Honestly, many gaming engines (especially for mmos) have these little weird engine issues. If you look closely enough, you'll see characters contort themselves in weird ways at times to avoid animation lock. It looks weird as hell, and is somewhat immersion breaking, but it's something we've dealt with across a number of mmos. Annoying? Yeah it can be. Deal Breaking? Nah not really.

one would think just simple make the character move it's legs when you move to fix it but i dont know anything about game making so might be really hard to do.

It's a matter of time and effort rather than difficulty.

The sliding was their solution to animation locking in XI also, I wouldn't expect them to change it.  Was less noticable there as you were blinking in and out of existence with major animations when you swapped equipment for a skill/spell.

WoW does this, but sometimes during heavy animation use and moving, the torso rotates on the legs in a fairly unnatural looking manner. The armor and character models hide it pretty well, but it's most obvious on the Forsaken, since they are pretty much just skeleton around the hips.

Engine limitation as well as aesthetics are really the deciding factors. SE may just prefer the look of a sliding character or a contorting character.

imposible to fix, what about animations for Monk when he uses kicks? The only solution is animation lock, but is worse than sliding.

GW2's issue is caused by lag while FF XIV's issue is caused by animation locking.

    This.

I always found it amusing watching my WoW Warrior contort into ridiculous positions while moving, swinging his massive 2hander.

    Relevant.

    http://forum.square-enix.com/ARR-Test/threads/53695-Future-Battle-System-Adjustments?p=777469#post777469

    Key stuff:

    • Battle Effects
Regarding feedback on effects mentioning that “battle animations are too flashy,” “I can’t see due to all the flashy animations,” “due to the large amount of participants, it’s hard to comprehend what is going on in FATE and instance dungeons,” and other feedback, the video effects and battle teams are continuing to look into these concerns for launch.
      • Flashy animations will be adjusted.
      • The scale of effects will be addressed. (Characters being hidden due to large sizes, etc.)
      • The number of particles will be limited (Aspects where particles were too spread out)
      • Addition of an effect display configuration for the PS3 version.
This is what we plan on addressing by launch according to the feedback we received. After the release, we will continue to make adjustments based on feedback.

      -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    • Animation

Regarding the sliding movement while utilizing a weapon skill, we will do our very best to have movement animations completed by launch.

Please provide as much feedback as you can where you feel movement animation needs to be improved.

I'd honestly thought they were going to just leave it as is. Sliding all over the place. I didn't really have a problem with it, lol. But it's nice to hear they have something in mind.
