Is it a grind?

cumbomcumbom Member CommonPosts: 544

I am looking for a new MMO but I so seriously don't want to play a game that takes forever to get to the final levels like EQ2 and COH, but more of a ladder like WoW or the old SWG, is DnL for me?

Every MMORPG is a grind to one degree or the other, the question should be is it a fun grind and as the above poster pointed out come back and ask in 2 weeks.

    I miss DAoC

To the OP:  It's seems that you don't really like the MMO "grind."  Might I suggest FPS?

The grind is what makes a MMORPG an MMORPG.  Taking a character from zero to 'leet is even better if that process is long and hard.  I respect games with huge grinds.  That means whenever you see that Lv. 100 Paladin walking around in shiny armor, you know he/she had to work their asses off for it.  (Unless they bought it...which don't even get me started on that!!!!!!!!!!!!!image )

That is why I respect the grind.  That is why I respect games with grind over those without.  That is why I respect people who earn their stuff and don't buy from companies who sell online game money.

Back to the OP:  Obviously you want to reach the top levels of a game, you just don't want put in the time and effort?  I understand that, belive me I do.  But, as a wise man once said:  "If you want somethin' nice, gotta give a little sacrifice."

Grind is good.  Keeps money in the pockets of game companies, keeps players busy, and most of all gives you bragging rights when you reach the top.

I agree.  A game without a long leveling curve will have a problem keeping its playerbase interested.  It is nice to play a game where levels have some meaning and there is a sense of accomplishemnt in progressing your character.

Long Levelling Curve does not have to equal grind.

In my opinion, the term grind means repetitive unchallenging content to
reach a goal that does not prove in the slightest that i am a competent and
or 'epic' player of my character class.

How is it rewarding to achieve a level after killing 1 billion [insert random mob]
who presents little to no challenge or threat to your character? If you find this
sort of gameplay satisfying then props to you, there are many games out there
for you, i sincerely hope that one day i find a game that doesn't consider
repetition a valid form of exciting gameplay.

Personally, i would like a long levelling period that is achieved by completing challenging
and interesting content and not reduced to repeating one process over and over again
until my eyes bleed. In other words, a game that actually delivers on the content and
doesn't use copy and paste too much to add fancy words to the advertising. [featuring over ### quests, the adventure never ends]. Bastards never tell you how many of those quests are the same
freaking thing now do they. ::::25::

If you think EQ2 is a grind, you haven't played it lately.

You can find out for yourself on Dec 8th, i dont belive it's really a grind as the conventional, obviousaly you cant make it to the higher levels without xp but i belive there are more ways to go about getting it than constantally killing a single mob

You can only find out for yourself tbh, 10000 free SoG keys will be available on the 8th of december, Good luck :)

That's the way I see it.

As I understand it there will be two ways of earning XP. Combat and Social. You will get social XP from exploration, finding POIs, questing. crafting, contructing strongholds etc. Combat XP is the more traditional XP most MMORPGs use and comes from killing mobs, combat quests and FvF PvP etc.

Folks should also remember that SoG isn't DnL. It's a stand alone prequel. It is not an open beta. Many features of DnL will not be in SoG. The closed beta for DnL full continues during SoG and will do so until DnL full is ready for release. I state this because some people get confused as to the relationship of SoG to DnL full. The link at the foot of this post may answer many questions people have about SoG gameplay and its relationship to DnL full.

I'm not going to get involved in the theories, conspiracy and otherwise, posted on this forum because nobody really knows and it is all supposition as yet. I'm simply pointing out facts as stated by AD and the devs on the DnL forums. What the reality actually is we will have to wait and see on the 8th as far as SoG is concerned, and until April for DnL. If what I've gleamed from the DnL forums, dev chats etc. is correct than this game will not be a conventional grind as found in most other MMORPGs, as you correctly state.

    (a) I played EQ2 at launch and it was a grind, and a horribly boring one at that.
    (b) I don't play games to endlessly do the same dumb stuff over and over again just to feel happy that I did a boring thing endlessly so now I don't have to do boring things anymore
    (c) the end game is usually where the most fun is to be had.

I wasn't able to get into the trial, so if anyone can answer the question - is this game a grind like EQ2 was at launch and COH is or is the levelling curve more along the lines of WoW or the way SWG used to be?

OOOOOOO I wasted alll this time to get to level 60 or 70 or 50 and ooooo I am sooo kewl, I killed a zillion creatures in the same dungeon for 1 month of actual playing time! Yay I AM KEWL!!!!

No thanks, I would rather have fun playing my games, I already have a job and I go to skewl.

I would like to progress steadily through a game without having to resort to dungeon grinding like I had to in EQ2 and zone type grinding I did in COH.

I found that Guild Wars had less of a leveling grind. If you just go through the missions, maybe a few side quests, you don't even need to think about your level, it'll take care of itself until your maxed at 20. Of course, Guild Wars isn't technically and MMORPG, it's a CORPG. . .

All MMO's require time to level characters up, and I think people here are trying to distinguish between thoughtless repetitive tasks and challenging content. If killing a hundred rabbits over and over is a grind, killing a hundred really kickass rabbits that you have a chance of losing against -- say, 10-20 percent chance of death -- would not be a grind in my opinion, or at least would be a worthwhile grind. In other words, emphasis should be placed on the difficulty of each individual task, and the long time it takes to get the "uber" level 100 should be focused on quality not quantity, but yes, it should still take just as long.
