I am asking b/c I'm incredibly impressed by it. It not only looks amazing but it runs so smooth. Even when i have like 10 players on screen during boss battles with particle effects it runs quite amazing. I don't know how they achieved that but damn Square.. I'm impressed.
the only things I don't like are water and sometimes grass/shrubs/plants look very out of place in some areas.

If I recall correctly it's a trimmed down version of the engine used in the Agni's Philosophy tech demo from last year's E3, so yeah, it's pretty damn powerful.
Edit: Yeah it's the Luminous Engine.
its there newest engine that theya re going to be using with the ps4. luminious (sp)
If you're talking about 1.0, then yes it is did, But that's because it used Crystal Tools. This game does not. Totally different games. I can hardly get over 60 fps average on any recent MMO maxed. This however I can play maxed with a couple dozen other people around me and not go below 100fps.
No it's not, they've said it was similar but does not use luminous.
My boyfriend who has a 7 year old computer can run this with no lag or skipping, yet TSW, GW2, and numerous other titles give him a bit of frame rate drop even at the lowest of settings.
In fact he can even play this game on high settings and doesn't experience that much difficulties when in other games he is forced to turn every little setting to the lowest and still experiences issues. TC is right, this game is really optimized well, It amazed me.
I am happy to hear that it at least runs smooth at all. The original game just couldn't, period, staring at the ground had performance issues. But I know what you mean, When you compare what Rift can do with 60 people all blowing the hell out of a 200 foot tall Rift event in a huge open world at 85 FPS, then ya its not that impressive.
I promise you, this game beats the hell out of Rift in performance optimization. No other MMO even comes close to this game.
this
rift good engine? Are u kidding me? LOL rift has 1 of the worst engines ever...while the graphics look like they been created in 2005. You can't compare the graphical fidelity of FFXI:ARR to Rift or WoW. Even in the Cities with i don't know how many characters around it runs on a steady 60FPS (i use adaptive sync) for me on an i5-2500k with a gtx 580 (on ultra max settings).
The game is beautiful and runs extremely smooth. There is simply no lag anywhere, not in the ui, combat or world.
ive been playing WoW and RIft recently and for some reason with both those game im getting 25-35 fps everywhere. I just started to play FF14ARR this weekend and i get between 35-60 fps everywhere (average of 45-55), no matter how much people are in there and all maxed out. The Luminous engine is very well optimized imo. 1.0 was not very well but this one definitelly is even in beta
Sounds like maybe your due for a computer upgrade.
Everything has it's price, from what I've read the world feels quite a a bit corridor-ish, and bodies of water are just for show because you can't swim. Still that's a significant improvement over 1.0 that deserve quite a bit of credits.
As for GW2, the number of things that GW2 has to track is far higher than the standard the MMORPG: for examples, projectiles are proper projectiles that can be blocked if there's something between it and the target, instead of simply homing in the target after the situation's been calculated, not to mention environmental skills that change the surrounding environment that can be combined with other skills, also GW2 has to track dynamic events chain and adjust them according to the number of players. Also the bodies of water in GW2 are very large, very detailed and fully interactible, the only invisible walls you'll find in GW2 is at the edges the zone. And from what I've seen, GW2's animation is far more fluid than FF XIV ARR, and I mean fluid, not just look good.
As for RIFT and TSW, RIFT's engine was just bad and TSW was made by funcom, I don't think I need to say anything more about that.
huh? i can move rift at max w/o problems (other than tempest bay and Events , GH , Conquest) , but thats doesnt mean that gamebryo is a good engine ....FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR FROM IT , and i know Trion modified and changed parts of the engine over time , still FFXIV runs 200% smoother than Rift
becouse maps are small with narrow linear paths everywhere
this kind of games dont req great pc to run its a open world but with narrow linear and small maps
There is some truth to what you say. There definitely are some sacrifices made to make the game look good and run smooth but as long as i don't feel confined in game I am fine with this. =]
well 1.0 was extremely linear and boxy. With no jump you felt like you could not go anywhere.
The new 2.0 is immensily better. Graphics still look great and performance is really polished. You can jump and feels much more interactive with the world. I do agree that the zones do feel a little small but still quite good. I hope as the game expands they do their best to make them as big as possible.
Yeah i wish you could swim. I know every game to some extent has invisible walls. but it feels so much more immersive when the invisible walls are so far out and beyond what you can see. I still hate going to a bridge or ledge and not being able to jump off in the lake or ocean.
The world used to feel 'corridor-ish' in 1.0.
It does not feel that way now at all.
Again, it appears you are basing your info off 1.0
Even in this thread, some of the beta-testers feel the same.
I respectfully disagree, there are areas that are vast and wide and open. The zones remind me a lot of EQ or DAoC or FFXI sized zones.
There's a reason why it's not an amazing open world like WoW.
PS3 memory limitations. It's not an excuse, it's just a technical fact. I'm certain if it wasn't for the console version (not taking a jab at console players), we'd have a lot less loading screens.
SE has stated they're keeping it in-house, but expressed that other developers have expressed huge interest in it.
Actually given the level of graphics in TSW that engine works really well. Even Nvidia said it's the most graphically advanced MMO on the market. A lot of people are quick to blame the engine for their woes but sometimes your computer just sucks.
Also, MMOs are notoriously CPU heavy and I think people greatly underestimate this. You need to get a very good CPU when you're building a PC for MMO gaming. A lot of people go cheap or mid-ranged on the CPU then buy a GTX 690 and wonder why their MMOs run like crap.
its impressive how it work.. beautifull, fast.. smooth..
Cant wait to see this game with a year or two of patchs, content added, etc. if the launch go well, this game will increase his population instead decrease.
