By the time EQ Next is released, PS4 will be out. This game is going to also be on PS4. (ok not offcially announced, but it will be on there). PLanetside 2 is on PS4, elder scrolls online is on it, FXIV is on it, etc. EQ = sony = on PS4.
Lets see, if it will run on a PS4, then that means the game will run on a $150 GPU and a $80 processor. So, $1000 PC? no, $400 video card? no, not even close. Most of us already have PC's that will be way overspec for the game.
$80 processor? Didn't realize it was so cheap.
The 8 core jaguar is about as fast as half of a core i7-2700k, when you look at the raw numbers. thats roughly a $250 processor. Now, the reason i say $80 is because that speed comparison assumes you are able to utilize all 8 cores at full power. Unfortunately, this is simply not the case. NO game has come out that currently utilizes 4 cores properly, much less 8. Writing properly multithreaded code is notoriously difficult. So when it comes to games, single core speed is still king. Having a 2 or 3 core processor in which each individual core is really beefy is much better than a 6 or 8 core processor where each individual core is no so beefy.
Even business software which is designed around multiple processors typically crap out after about 4 cores/threads and additional core/threads add less and less performance.
Its kind of like when you SLI two video cards, you dont get 2x performance, its more like 1.8 of the single card, then you add a third card and instead of 3x its more like 2.4x.
HOPEFULLY though the XBOX One and PS4 will force these game companies to stop being so lazy with their coding and start putting real effort into properly utilizing multiple processor cores.

The day you can crack open a console box and upgrade the hardware is the day I'll buy a game like EQN on it. As it stands, console gaming (for me, get it? Opinion here) is best left for the platformers or jRPGs. MMOs and other games that allow for extensive keybinding or the twitch reflexes only a mouse can facilitate will always be superior on a PC.
Besides, why would I want to play at a measely 1080 dpi?

Not really interested in this game, but PS4 is using AMD 8 core apu(good thing, i like APUs, got one on my laptop) which is x86-64 architecture(PC) and PS4 is powered by customized FreeBSD(linux) so i don't see any problem for PC games being ported to PS4 and vice versa, because you mostly need to recompile, probably little changes to none on source and controls.
You can't build PC that is as powerful as a PS4 for £350, but if more people would learn how easy to it is to build PC's then maybe the death of the consoles would finally arrive and we can get back to more serious games, instead of the tumour that is gaming currently.
well multiple graphics settings with consoles locked on high. Btw less and less people are sitting with 10 or more years old pc, for myself i upgrade my old box time by time, somehow it looks funny with old case and intel logos with gigabyte and inside there is MSI and AMD only
Do not get me wrong I love playing games on my PC but... I love console gaming too when I just want to chill out and use a controller. I'll be getting it on both probably if they decide in the future to link the servers. PlanetSide 2 I'm going to just use the PS4.
PC all the way. Honestly planning to skip this generation of consoles.
As easy as it is to use Xbox controller on a pc, why spend another 4 or 5 hundred bucks for a machine that does less than my gaming laptop, bonus I don't have to pay Microsoft or Sony just for the privilege of using the machine, that I own, on Internet that I already pay for. No brainer.
If you have a good pc, why would anyone use a console? 90 % of the games end up on steam's 10 dollar rack a couple of years after they launch anyway.
As EQN is concerned, if recent console mmos are an indicator, it being on consoles is to the detriment of the game.
Since I use my PC for more than just gaming and have the desire to upgrade it every 5 years or so depending on how things develop I will be playing EQN on my PC.
As for the MMO world going to console.. Well great for those who want that.. But the PC market is in no way dying out. Too many people like me who use their PC's for more than just gaming rigs..
If it is on PC or console, then PC. I would only play a MMO on console if it is designed for console, like Phantasy Star Online / Universe. PSO2 will hopefully use Xbox 360 controller for Windows.
Most MMOs need keyboard / mouse though, so MMOs are games that are not really ones to chill out on with a controller, and would if playing on console would need a keyboard + mouse / controller or combo controller to get the most out of it, unless designed for the console with controller, but even still a keyboard always helps
EQ1 and EQ2 never made it to console, but PS2 did get a new version called Everquest Online Adventures, which never made it to PC. It was written with the PS2 in mind

I can do that on PC too - It is more viable nowadays than in the past. If the PC / Laptop has a HDMI port it is easy, and Xbox 360 controller for Windows, almost makes consoles redundant.
I used to stick to consoles for that very reason, but last I year I built a new PC for SWTOR, but then have been using it to play other PC games too. I bought the GTA bundle on Steam for about a tenner, and GTA IV on PC is awesome - With the Xbox 360 controller for Windows, and PC hooked up to TV, the game supports GFWL so gets achievements added to your gamerscore, so GTA IV totally makes the Xbox 360 redundant, plus the graphics are better, and many mods for the game too
Many recent games support the Xbox 360 controller for Windows too, but before that it was a nightmare configuring them. Not so now - PC games give the choice, 1) Controller (Xbox controller) or 2) Keyboard / Mouse. Whereas console games are just mainly designed around the controller.
I can hear the screaming already, as the PS4 phanboies get their butts whooped in EQN by the mouse/keyboard users. Oh, how I can almost hear the nerf cries for this crowd.

Because for 99% of gamers, there isnt a way to "relax" or "lounge" and game on the PC. While kicking back in a comfy recliner or laying on the couch and playing on a 40-50 inch tv is very plausible.
As someone who has a crooked spine, sometimes I'm just not in the mood to be gaming at my PC. I do it a lot, but sometimes it's just.. I'd rather relax and take some pressure off. I always have to sit up stern and straight and be serious when I'm gaming at my PC -- There is no relaxation factor when gaming. Internet browsing, sure. Gaming, no.
I will probably play EQN on my gaming PC but I wouldnt rule out playing it on the PS4 my brother and I have pre-ordered.

Yes because MMORPG players who are used to standing in one spot bashing a monster over and over again by hitting f1-f4 80 times are obviously going to have the advantage over a group of players who play CoD and Battlefield most of their lives in twitch gaming.

with a cordless mouse and keyboard. My PC gaming setup is WAY more comfortable than xbox via my couch. But change came gradualy over the years. I used to have crappy computer chairs too, then one day I was like, NOPE. If I'm going to spend a couple dozen hours every week at my pc, my buttocks would be sitting in style.
PC definitely, everything that can be played there i will play it as i don't really care very much for these new generation consoles since i am not all that impressed with their hardware as some others seem to be.
I might pick up one of them eventually but again, PC for me is a superior platform and overall a gaming platform of my primary choice.
I dont see it worth buying a console MMO till things can be balanced between PC and console and as a IT guy, I dont see that happening for a long time.

I thought most MMO players dont like PVP. Arent they too busy decorating their house and collecting appearence items to play such rubbish?
Besides, killing another player is more of a measure of the winning players competitiveness. The vast majority of MMO players couldnt handle an average Tuesday night in a rather mundane Xbox live lobby if they cant even handle PVP in their own back yard FFS.
For those of you that say it is speculation....it's not like they reached up a noob arse and pulled it out.
WH40K has confirmed to be on consoles.
TESO ...confirmed on consoles.
And there was a hint dropped, and it would odd that SOE would let some other company break the MMO barrier on consoles without having it's own in the race too?.......give Sony just a little credit.
My big question is will they be on the same servers.........

Most PC MMOs have PvP and its a rare thing to find a PC MMO that dose not have PvP or often its the focus. I find the chatter on consoles to be more a tornado of kids slinging unneeded insults. I find PC gamers tend to have a more mature group as you need to be able to afford a PC to game that costs more. Most kids do not have that kinda cash. Where every kiddy has their parent buy them the best baby sitting tool for $250 to 399, you next gen console. Not only is a PC better equipped to play a full MMO but I find there is a more mature group playing PC. Only MMO I would play on a console is a FPS model.
Its going to be interesting to see how EQN works if it does come to the PS4 graphically wise.
In an interview http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHnL8Ud3rfc at about 12:40-1:00 he talks about how graphics on the PS4 for Planetside 2 will be maxed out. Does this mean the same for Everquest Next, I have to wonder.

I just dont see it happening. Not if they want to keep EQN as high end PC MMO. 1 to 2 years from now maxed out setting on PS4 will again be below standards for PC.

I don't really see the point of playing an mmo on console, with them joy sticks and a handful of buttons.
However I will (maybe) get PS4 to play a racing game, and arcade like game.
