I briefly tried the game when it first came out, but I was totally consumed by UO at the time and didn't play either AC or EQ for longer than a month or so. But looking back now, AC had some really interesting elements. I kinda feel bad for not playing it back when it was new and popular (and populated).
Ah well. I'm kind of in MMO stasis right now. I play a little WoW with the wife because that's the only video game she'll play with me, but it's only fun because I'm playing it with her. WoW is pretty and smooth, but my hearts not in it.
I'm really looking forward to Tabula Rasa and in the meantime I plan on resubbing to Star Wars for a month to check out the new game experience.
Alright, so this post is kind of pointless... I basically just wanted to say that I feel like AC1 was a missed opportunity for me, and I'm disappointed I never gave it a proper chance.
Have a nice day.

Im on my sixth mmorpg now and i have a lot of fond memories of AC (my first ever mmorpg)
While it may seem a little crude to todays standards of mmorpgs it still had a ton going for it. Sometimes i wish i was still playing it.
I eventually left AC to go play DAoC, and that was the biggest mistake of my mmorpg playing life. DAoC was not worth leaving AC for so i had quit DAoC after a couple of months. But alas instead of going back to AC i went and tried something new. Pity.
What is stopping you from playing AC today?
The game certainly is populated.
If you want to find people, talk to them on the general chat channel, or go to the marketplace. The game world has always been too big for the playerbase, but I would rather have a world too big than too small.
I wish they would merge servers together. People say it might be a sign that the game is almost dead, but I would love it. It would give so many new people to play with, and PvP might actually be somewhat alive again.

So true, Sheista. Turbine might be fearing merging the servers for more than one reason; a supposed sign of their collapsing (maybe they figure people will start fearing AC's end and quit), problems with carrying characters over from one server to another perhaps, keeping people while effectively doing away with their long-time home server might prove hard... I still think that it would help to revive AC1, and I think that it would draw in more people than it would cause to quit. It would be a good option in my opinion.
In the end, though we are from many servers, we all come from one world and that's what unites AC1's players. I think people could adapt well to the changes, even if it meant character loss.

I would prefer my house and secure storage over several times the amount of players. People are overreacting on the low population. I still see people all the time, in towns and dungeons. The game still has more than enough players. I actually felt the population rising over the past month. I guess people are getting bored with some of the other games.
It's not too late to play this game. I don't understand why people put so much weight in a game's population. This is a game, not a chat room. The gameplay mechanics should matter more. If all you want are people, go to a chat room. If you want to play a game, choose one based on what you want out of the game, not the other players.
I'd love to go back to Ac1 i just know people using the el tank program destroyed my passion for the game. Which is still there but ever since decal came out yea it made life easier but speed the game up and made it drastically easy. I'd admit Ac1 was my first and greatest love..... for mmo's that is :P
Asheron's Call was my first MMORPG and paved the way for me. Turbine was one of the first to cram content into monthly update and excite their fan base with live events ran by devs. Also they always knew that a good mmorpg could not be great without a solid storyline to every quest and event.
I look forward to D&D online or Middle Earth Online because Turbine is developing them. But after the huge let down from AC2...I wonder...

How many people do you need? I never enter a town and see no one. They used to tell us how many people were on a server when we logged on. I don't see that now but there seem to be "enough" people in Thistledown.
Granted the days of the story tellers is over. If there is a storyteller, I don't know him/her. I begged for safe muling and we got housing, so I quit asking for anything. I love my villa tho, and had a great time decorating until they quit putting new furniture in the game. Even furniture that is already drawn is not available for us to hook. The pictures do not fit the walls. You need to come to Thistledown, the water is fine and you can get a cottage or apartment, even a mansion as there are 15 available right now.
Just come in and play. What do you need with others? Others are here but what do you need with them? The attraction for me was to find what there was to find by myself. I recall killing a drudge, he had a necklace. I put it on and asked my friend, can you see it? He said no. I though what the heck is the good of a necklace if only I can see it. I found a flaming sword. The first I had ever seen. Being a mage I gave it to my sword friend. My heart swelled when I saw him running about, the sword leaving a trail of smoke and flame! The adventures are here, large and small.
You can easily get people to accompany you on any quest if you want them. There is a global chat that can be read by everyone logged on.
In my opinion, the social aspect is accomplished by the global chat channels and the marketplace. The marketplace has been bustling lately. I've seen around 30 people in there on some occasions within just the past week.
