[Preview] EVE Online: Demoing EVE-VR at E3 2013

During E3, the MMORPG.com team got together with CCP Games to check out the next ten years of EVE Online. One of the things they enjoyed seeing was the "EVE-VR" in action. See what the team thought and then head to the comments.

CCP continues to look at eSports with EVE and the Alliance Tournament offered some unique prizes through live stream. But what we also saw at E3 was EVE-VR, built to take full advantage of the Oculus Rift. CCP have a very solid deathmatch prototype game which could definitely translate into a massively scaled dogfighting game. We got to demo EVE-VR and the fast-paced space combat as seen through your own cockpit was simply awesome. The game was developed by five members of the EVE team for fun and now is looking like a solid addition to the studio’s game library. Using just missiles and lasers, you fight in a 7 vs. 7 combat scenario which only last a few minutes, but what a few minutes. Enhanced by the full 3D surround view of the goggles, the game brings you right into the seat of your ship.  I’ll let Bill and Rob explain it in their own words.

Guess I am off to youtube to look up some videos of this. Granted...having been there for Virtual reality and lawnmower man being a new release movie...I dont bother looking at that stuff anymore.

But you at least managed to pique my interest.

Since I can't walk on stations or shank someone from the shadows in some dark hangar in an act of revenge for gate camping and podding me, then I could settle for this.  If they fully integrated EVE-VR into EvE proper then I would gladly pay a sub for the game.

I think it would be truly amazing if you could fly a single fighter in a squadron that gets launched off of a carrier. Crazy potential there ;)

I can't wait for VR. I've been wanting it for at LEAST 10 years! Personally I want to play a VR RPG.

Virtual Reality is the secret weapon that will create a massive game (not just mmo) rennaissance.

This is NOT going to be integrated into Eve!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PLEASE stop looking at it and thinking how cool it would be to do this in EVE, its NOT going to happen.

The devs have already made that clear at Fanfest.

If you think its cool as a stand alone game then thats cool, but its NOT going to be part of eve EVER (thats due to the underlying eve code as explained by devs at fanfest)

Sadly, this is true. The Tranquility server has a "heartbeat" of 1 second: it updates everything - position, velocity, status etc once per second. The EVE client smooths out and extrapolates the action, and makes it seem like there's faster response, and that works well enough for the relatively slow movement of giant starships. But there's no way a high-speed twitch-action game like EVER could directly integrate into the mainstream EVE game without CCP completely re-writing their game engine.

I certainly hope that CCP develop EVR as a "connected", standalone game as they've done with Dust. If they wanted to kickstarter such a project I'd gladly kick in the price of a normal game for it.

I've pre-ordered the Gunnar Optiks Occulus Rift inserts. Not really. But I wouldn't be surprised to see them make inserts for the OR.

    so...
