Most Expansions EVAR(ever)

tigris67tigris67 Member UncommonPosts: 1,762

Was wondering what MMORPG has had the most expansions come out for it. Right now the winner is Everquest with a whopping 10 expansions out, not including their dumb lil bundle packs which would easily make it like 13. But here are all its expansions. image
I know Dark Age of Camelot has about 6 out. So anyone know any other mmo's that can beat this one?

    To Play Devils Advocate

EQ is also one of the oldest mmorpgs out there so it would be natural an expansion would be released. EQ has been out for about 8 years. So one expansion per 10 months isn't as bad as it looks

Finally, my opinion is, expansions are a good thing. If you took EQ and just left it alone, it would not have survived as long as it has...i dont care how good a DEV team you have.

I dont know many well known mmorpgs thats gone over a year or a year and a half without an expansion.

I'd have to disagree. Some expansions do ruin the gameplay because they're "you must buy the expansion to enjoy the game now and remain competitive".
Expansions that are offered for free, and are given to everybody who subscribes, are very very good expansions. EVE did the expansion system nicely. So did Ryzom. MMOCenter will also take this approach.
Of course, it's only considered an expansion if the download is substatially large enough to not be considered a monthly or bi-monthly patch... which sometimes also contains content.

So I guess what I'm trying to say is I agree that if you have to go buy a new box to get the new expansion content it's bad. But it if's just part of the gameworld update/upgrade, it's normally a good and welcomed thing. :-)

Actually En1gma, you're wrong on the 10 years thing. (Wikipedia is my friend.)

EverQuest (EQ) is a 3D fantasy massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) released in March 1999. The original design is credited to Brad McQuaid, Steve Clover, and Bill Trost. It was developed by Verant Interactive (which had recently parted from 989 Studios) and published by Sony Online Entertainment (SOE). SOE currently runs and distributes EverQuest.

6 years. I really think the early (pre-Luclin) expansions were good for EQ, but all those after were just money screwers.

I agree exansions somewhat ruin games. My beef is because they neglect the old zones, especially in EQ. I don't know how it is now, but runnyeye, mistmoore etc use to be packed with people, release an expansion everyone ditches it and goes to the new zones, as they should.

I kinda would have liked it if they added some new zones connected to the old ones. Like a mistmoore basement or something, for example.

    I hope that made sense.

I may be wrong here, it's been a long time but...I remember playing EQ1 in march of 1998. Didn't Verant release it independently in '98 then sony bought them out in 1999 and gave an official SOE re-release?

Ok let me say that again:

mmorpgs that have expansions that you have to pay for get ruined!

    Reason:

Because then they get stuck in a loop of making loads of expansions which put off new players. Also it makes old areas pretty useless!

I have to disagree to a point

Some expansions do make a game worse. However, Ive seen just as many expansions make a game better (paid expansions)

    For example:

    SWG: Jump To LightSpeed

That was a paid expansion that made the game better (I dont think I have ever met anyone who said they wouldnt buy JtLS or said they had JtLS and it made the game worse....but Im sure there's people out there lol)

    like i said above

    Jump To LightSpeed
Then Anarchy Online: Notum Wars (Never met anyone who hated that one)
DaoC: Catacombs (added an updated graphic engine...didnt meet a whole lotta people who hated that)
    ..those are just a few

Notum wars was free "Booster Pack"... as it should've been.

    Don't know about DAoC.

And I have to agree, I don't know anybody who didn't like Jump to Lightspeed... I do, however, know tons of people who said it should've been in the original release and not an expansion.

Sorry, didn't see the jump to lightspeed thing, I can thing of several bad expansions though, The Trials of Obi-Wan, many of the later EQ expansion packs. ACII Legions (not neccesarily bad, but shutting down AC2 a couple of months after release makes it look bad.)

Can't think of any others, however, if a Toontown online expansion is released I will jump off a bridge.

    Thanks for the concern En1gma.

Really, has anyone here played Everquest with all the expansions? Is the content nice? Is it all well maintained and nice?

(Can't think of many other words than nice right now, an evening of reading up on Warcraft lore will do that to you.)

i havent played EQ with all the expansions. To be honest, I havent played a single Mmorpg with ALL the expansions unless they had only one or two.

With SWG, I stopped after Jump to Lightspeed
With AO, I stopped after Shadowlands

    and so on...

I tend to only buy one expansion and pretty much leave it at that

Now I come to think of it, I've never played an expansion of an MMO ever, unless the SWG trial has some of the expandified graphics and stuff in it. I tried to like AO, but I couldn't.

Another thing which is odd, Meridian 59 has been around for about 6 years, and it has one expansion, which is just a graphics update, which is odd.

JTLS is free now :) doesnt count!

Also DAOC has already been ruined by a previous expansion + it has too many so people wont get into it.

WOW wont suffer because it'll have rare expansions and everyone will buy it cause it'll be good and Blizzard fanboys. I'm going to buy it and i don't even like WOW.

WoW's expansions will be bought by anybody who wants to remain competitive in that game.

Didn't they boost the cap level to 70 in the expansion?

Yep, completely making all the current endgame content obsolete. And not adding Northrend.

The cap will be there for non-expansion buyers too.
