Even though I'm a Sci-Fi fanatic, I've really never played that type of mmorpg.  It's not that I haven't wanted to, it's just none out there have appealed to me.

I too really enjoy my Sci-fi but I chose fantasy only because I have yet to find a Sci-Fi game that has held my interest.   I did play earth above and beyond for a bit but I didn't stick with it after the beta.  I also tried Planetside but I played that one even less than E&B.   I am not interested in Starwars or Matrix online.    I have read about a few Sci-Fi games upcoming but they haven't sparked my interest either.   If you all know of a good Sci-Fi let me know.

I recall a console game I played way back, where you were this dude that woke up in the morgue with something implanted in his head and you had to figure out what happened to you.  I enjoyed this game a lot.  If anyone recalls the name of a game like this let me know... I sure would like to play it on an emulator if I could find it.

The Game your talking about is called "ShadowRun" and it was awesome.  They had it out for SNES and Genesis (the one you are refering to is the SNES version).  There are ROMS for both of 'em out there, but sorry I...umm... I don't dabble in that.image

fantasy has been beaten into the ground, we need more sci fi!

hey everyone, this is my first time posting on this website. this will probably be a combination of questions and miscellanous thoughts (but they do pertain to the topic)
I have a question...why are so many MMORPG games fantasy? I know RPG games of the past have mostly been fantasy, but I don't really like how the market has become so saturated with this style of game.
I played Anarchy Online for a while, and loved the game for the futuristic setting, graphics, and people, but it got really stale after I got my main guy up to level 30. From 30 to 200-something just seemed like it'd be the same thing over and over.
Personally, I'm looking forward to City of Heroes. From the sound of it on their website, they're gonna keep it complex enough so it doesn't go stale so fast, yet cool enough to grab your interest anytime.
Thanks to all who read this, and I appreciate any replies to my question or thoughts. :::^)::
Oh yeah, I've also played Planetside and The Sims Online. Planetside just seemed like a waste of time, and The Sims Online was a total money scam. Would anyone here like to pay me $50 for a half-assed game? Or how about an additional $15/month for a bunch of empty promises and no progress?

I personally dont believe its possible (or fun) to make a good sci-fi roleplaying game.  With that and my love for all things fantasy, I vote fantasy hands down.  image

Yeah same, finding a good sci-fi game is like a scientist discovering pultonium.

As far as MMORPG go has to be fantasy.

There was a time I would have loved a sci fi MMORPG but AO knocked my intrest down and the rest that followed making it worse.

As for single player  I would say sci-fi anyday.

All of the MMORPGs that ive played were fantasy so I'd have to say that is my favorite heh...none of the sci-fis seem enjoyable to me. City of Heroes looks like a fun game though...so I'm waiting for that

Ok, I agree on the City of Heroes- but the game is an enigma... a rumor... a ghost of a creation.  I mean, can we get ANY type of time update on it?

All I have to say is...."Remember Shadowbane..."

Personally I'm partial to Fantasy... but if they were to come out with a "Shadowrun" MMORPG then I'd definetly have to try that out. That or a MMORPG version of Mechwarrior, that'd be interesting...

Funny thing is, I've thought about a MechWarrior type mmorpg as well.  I'm just not sure it would work, everyone and their mother would probably want to run around in their Mechs all the time.  Well either mechs or the suits or fighters.  Don't get me wrong, I luv my MechWarrior series (I ran with the baddest damned clan in MW3 back in 2001 SNOW RAVENS BA-BY!!) but I just can't see the mmorpg market ready for a game of that magnitude.

Fantasy seems to lend itself better to the medium, or it may just be that I'm predisposed to believe that from years of hack and slash dungeon crawls like D&D. I loved Jedi Knight II and Knights of the Old Republic, so I'm convinced that good sci-fi games can and do happen, I just haven't tried any in an MMOG setting yet.

I'm very curious about SWG, despite the many complaints I've read. Right now it doesn't seem to have many of the trappings of good sci-fi, but when the vehicles and space expansion are finally incorporated and I can fly anywhere in the (bug free)galaxy in my starship...then I think they'll have me.

  • LansidLansid Member UncommonPosts: 1,097

Hrrrrm... SWG. Now they're supposed to be getting the add-on thing later where you can actually fly ships and pilot other land based things...

Soooooooo.... maybe SWG could be the "trial" to see how well something like that would work... then leave in the good, take out the bad, and apply it to the Mechwarrior MMORPG!

    Ooh, the possibilities.... <grins happily>

Maybe this could be the start of another post... but DAMN that'd be cool as hell.

I think MechWarrior could lend itself very well to a MMOG setting. The controls of your mech would be very similar to those of your avatar, and BattleTech/MechWarrior has always been pretty combat oriented in all it's incarnations.

Making a spaceship fly without the joystick that gives the fast-twitch set a distinct advantage, yet still make it engaging, will be tough. I'm anxious to see how SWG will accomplish it.

  • DesperadoDesperado Member Posts: 467

Ok, despite ALL  the bad things I've ever said about SWG (..and my friend- I've said alot) I would go bonkers over any mmorpg game that could pull off letting you get in your ship and switch from 3rd person Avatar mode to ship-battle ready mode.

I mean that mmorpg would trully be next gen'.  In the past, it's always been a cake walk to create a great space flight sim from the star wars series.  So hopefully when SWG does bring this aspect into their game, they'll have gotten their shyat together.

Then and only then will they have redeemed themselves in my eyes.

That's what gets me the most about SWG. The game mechanics sound innovative and to my liking, but so far it's not really what I'm looking for in sci-fi. I want to be able to step aboard my ship, walk around inside it, sit down at the controls and watch the world recede in the viewscreen as I lift off toward distant horizons. The most magical experience a SW game has to offer, in my opinion, and it's completely lacking, and will be for who knows how long?

I prefer Sci-Fi but it seems that I'm gonna have to wait until Face of Mankind is released, because all the SF games we got today are missing important things, like atmosphere for example.

They all get boring too quickly - NC, AO, SWG.

Missing content or the point in playing.
