FFXI, WoW, FFXIV: A Quantitative comparison

How do I know FFXIV is good?  Because I want to keep playing.

Is it for everyone?  Of course not.  There’s no such thing as pleasing all the people all the time.

FFXI        5 years

WoW      6 years

Many others…

My comparison to FFXI and WoW solely based on 2 phases of FFXIV beta:

(These are just approximations based on my own opinions! (Obviously))  The numbers represent my own personal level of fun / entertainment.

You can probably come up with many other categories that are important to you.

Ok so it doesn’t re-invent the wheel, we know!

There’s a reason I played them both for so long.  They are both Good Games!  How many of us have said to ourselves,  “If only they would remake FFXI or WoW with better graphics I would play it” (me!),  and this is the best of both worlds.   For the most part the detractors are either purest FFXI fans who want the same game with shinier pixels – which is unrealistic to expect and by no means changes that this is a great game in its own right; or WoW fans that are used to a 1.5s cooldown and everything else seems too slow/boring because it’s all they know and have not yet discovered the challenge of a more paced, strategic approach to combat.

Anyway – just one players two cents while I keep myself busy waiting for the weekend beta.  I said I wasn’t going to play it too much so as not to ruin the newness at release but I just can’t tear myself away!

Having played all three games myself I would like to respond with my own opinions.

I think your marks are pretty on except the end game. To me, FFXI's end game was leagues beyond WoW's. I think WoW may offer more "things" to do, as in number of raids available, but what you actually accomplished in FFXI was much more difficult and therefor rewarding.

I also prefer the combat (auto attack, skillchains etc.) from FFXI over both WoW and FFXIV

I fully agree with that.  FFXI has my favorite combat system of any MMO.  Nothing compares, and I really wish FFXIV used something more like it.

I absolutely agree with the comments about skillchains.  They were one of my favorite aspects of XI and I will miss them dearly as I always have.  I think the combat style in XIV however is, although clearly not the same, a step back in that direction.

Not having played XI explain skill chains?  What is different to now.

In FFXI every weapon skill  is based on an element (fire, water, wind, lightning, ice, earth, light, dark).  You can create a combo by two players using weapon skills one after the other, if they corresponded to a specific sequence of elements.  It would create an additional animation along with bonus damage.  A caster could then finish the skillchain with a spell of the corresponding element to add even more bonus damage in the form of a "magic burst".

    Very very fun.

Id hate to burst OP's bubble but posting your own scores to things isnt making it quantitive. Its still subjective.

Any graphical, audio, or gameplay restrictions not seen in other mmos but found in FFXIV can be blamed on one thing.

Ah cool so combos via elements and teamwork nice.  Maybe they will add that at some point in 2.0, would be nice.

In FFXIV its Limit Breaks which is pretty much the same thing that requires the team to be in sync.  Like the dragoon can pull off the Omni Slash and do a lot of damage while other jobs do their own thing like Paladin can create a giant wall.

they show some of it in this trailer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWeTxlVXVTE

I can appreciate a numerical rating system like such, for comparison, as I have also played the listed games fairly extensively. I can't say I agree with your scores at all, though, lol. I think you were quite harsh on WoW in crafting, art and story (story being one of the things WoW was always better at than any other MMO). Albeit, I haven't played WoW since 2008.

I am totes sad to hear that skillchains are not present, but I also heard that FFXI was "dumbed down" years ago and they were removed or nerfed from there, too... so it makes sense why they'd remove it, since the pattern in all games is to make them absurdly simple and require very little teamwork or communication.

There are many things that are subjective, that as a matter of standard practice, we attempt to quantify.  Ever hear the term "marketing"?

It says right in the post its an opinion based on personal experience.  Pretty sure that satisfies any requirement for acknowledgement and awareness that its subjective.  :)

Well then his title is misleading. Since there is no metric to measure games by, it will always be subjective. Say I would rate Rift a 10/10 and Tsw 6/10 but I cant produce a metric that states why, just opinions.

Nice, I only got into beta last weekend and played up to lvl 15 solo and didn't really have a chance to see limit breaks.

I would have to agree wtih Ehllfhire... since it's based on your opinion and all, so it technically doesn't count as quantitative.

But I think your ratings are pretty fair. Although, besides the combat and all, the end-game is what is going to majorly make or break this game compared to the other factors. FFXI and WoW did their job for 5+ years.. but we'll see if FFXIV can really compare in these next few months once PvP comes into play, and we can see how challenging these new end-game dungeons are going to be. SE has a lot of expectations riding up on them and will have to own up to their promises by releasing huge, fresh content  every month to keep us Americans busy with the little attention span we have left.. hahaha.

I doubt really doubt we will have a bad end game, people tend to forget there was 1.0 for 3 years. they already have added tons of end game content for those guys.

now on top of all this, they are adding raids in the crystal tower and bahamaut labyrinth and 5 new instances and open field fates that includes item rewards. it will be good

I agree with quite a few of your scores there, very good.

    Ones I don't agree with:

The combat is not so close call. FFXI's combat is a 4 at best. I would not change the other two ratings.

I would change the graphics score of WoW and FFXI to 6. They are too different to rate against one another, and they both have their good and bad sides. Maybe you have taken that into account in having both art and graphics score.

Very good comparison over-all in my opinion. Still subjective though.

FFXI combat was a straight rip from the classic EQ model (but classic eq combat was miles ahead of ffxi). The only thing that was different was skillchains.

The game I've played the past weekends has not been a total failure, the opposite actually.

I guess you have access to some later build or something? Insider in mmorpg.com?

I still find it hilarious people actually think FFXIV has more strategic combat than WoW or really any MMO (aside from maybe EQ and FFXI) for that matter.
  • RoguewizRoguewiz Member UncommonPosts: 711

I could never really get into FFXI.  I found it incredibly boring and slow.  To be fair, I'm a former Everquest player that tried playing FFXI shortly after it came out.  I then jumped from game to game (and still am).  Going from WoW to FFXI was impossible for me.  Heck, going from EQ to FFXI was impossible.  If I would have started FFXI first, I would probably have a better opinion of it.

    Combat

    • FFXI:  4 out of 10
    • WOW: 7 out of 10
    • FFXIV:  7 out of 10
    * Reasoning:  As mentioned before, the combat in FFXI was too slow for my tastes.  As far as WoW and FFXIV go; the combat is rather straight forward.  One really isn't better than the other.  I prefer real action combat over "stand that and hit the mole with abilities".

    Graphics
    • FFXI:  7 out of 10 (basing this upon how I felt at the time)
    • WOW:  7 out of 10
    • FFXIV:  9 out of 10
    Crafting
    • FFXI:  No opinion.  Didn't craft
    • WOW:  3 out of 10
    • FFXIV:  7 out of 10
WoW crafting was bland, simplistic, and otherwise not enjoyable.  FFXIV crafting is ok, but EQ2 is better :)

    Raiding/End-Game
    • FFXI:  No opinion, Didn't play long enough to craft
    • WOW:  8 out of 10 up to BC, 6 out of 10 up to WoTLK, Yuck up to Cata
    • FFXIV:  TBD
    Music
    • My iPod >>>>>>>>>>  FFXI, WOW, and FFXIV
    Art
    • FFXI:  No opinion
    • WOW:  6 out of 10
    • FFXIV:  7 out of 10
    Story
    • FFXI:  8 out of 10 (based upon me watching my friends play)
    • WOW:  6 out of 10
    • FFXIV:  9 out of 10
    Immersion
    • FFXI:  No Opinion
    • WOW:  8 out of 10 up to WoTLK, 5 out of 10 for the rest
    • FFXIV:  8 out of 10 (not bad so far)
    Community
    • FFXI:  Didn't play long enough to talk to anyone
    • WOW:  8 out of 10 during Vanilla, 5 out of 10 for the rest.
    • FFXIV:  No opinion at this time
    Customization
    • FFXI:  No opinion
    • WOW:  6 out of 10 up to WoTLK, 5 out of 10 beyond that, and with MoP 1 out of 10
    • FFXIV:  6 out of 10
Right now, I'm not totally sold on the character customization in FFXIV.  The armoury system is awesome, that much I will give it, but you're limited on what abilities you can use in your primary class from other classes.  I should be able to cast Fire or Lightning as a Gladiator if I want to (would be great for pulling).  Instead, you're restricted to buffs and healing spells.

What can I say, I'm a bitter MMO player that is tired of the "same ole thing".

    Raquelis in various games
    Played: Everything
    Playing: Nioh 2, Civ6
    Wants: The World
Anticipating: Everquest Next Crowfall, Pantheon, Elden Ring

Tank - Healer - Support: The REAL Trinity

Even though you used numbers, this is still a qualitative approach since the numerical ratings are your opinion.

Not that it matters.  I'm a numbers guy and when I saw quantitative, I was excited.  Left me hanging ...

quantitative comparison based on completely arbitrary readouts... whaaaat lol. thought i was going to see some scientific analysis of mmorpgs. man what a misleading title you really had me interested for a second there lol.

Most memorable games: AoC(Tryanny PvP), RIFT, GW, GW2, Ragnarok Online, Aion, FFXI, FFXIV, Secret World, League of Legends (Silver II rank)
