I know this will never get produced but I think the next step is a total domination MMORPG. Somewhere from 2-6 factions fighting it out against eachother to the death.
I know there are PvE people out there and more power to them, I'm not in any way putting them down. For me the real challenge is against other people. People that can get creative in their methods of killing.
What I envision is any MMO today in setting but with towns, villages, even cities of NPC's on their own faction. If you're able to conquer an enemy Town, village or city completely taking over their shrine or shrines then the town spawns your faction NPCs.
I know there are some games out there with this mechanic in place but I don't think they go far enough. I think that it should continue until all cities are conquered and then I think they should have a big server wipe and start over again.
I know some of the weaknesses in this concept. People will jump faction for the winning side, even if it means buying a new account. People would quit playing out of frustration. People will whine because the max level character they have will be wiped along with the gear and all that kind of thing.
I believe that if they did this well, with really balanced factions and such that the retention of customers would be very large. WoW has one of the largest if not the largest subscription rates ever but the game sucks. It's way too easy and they made PvP meaningless with the addition of the arenas.
I think that even though many would quit, those who stayed around for the end battle would regain the feeling over and over again as they battle for key places in the world. A true PvP world with the possiblility of total defeat, but also with the possiblity for Domination.

Eve is alot like you describe.
I mean there's no real way to be totally driven from the game, but your alliance and corp can definitely be driven out of an area and totally broken. Its actually kind of harsh but thats what I like about it.
i would think your proposed system is not suitable for a MMorpg as the "rpg" terms ususally (for computer games) includes advancement and development of the character and your idea completely remove the focus from the character and put it on the efforts/player/pvp.
The system, however, would work pretty well for a MMORTS or even for a MMOFPS. in the first field i believe there actually are games that uses a similar concept of having periodic recreation of the galaxies.
"If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day, if you teach him how to fish, you feed him for a lifetime"
To me this idea sounds completely like a RTS except each unit is controlled by a player. I cannot see this working due to your server wipe idea, even if it was a great game every time it a server wiped players would leave. The first wipe would see the most players leave then less and less will leave everywipe there after I know because I've seen agame try and solve faction imbalances (in your case a faction getting wiped out) by wiping the server.
What if they worked hard for their armor and weapons, there are always people even if you tell them it will be wiped will still complain since they had the best weapon, armor, character.
To me it seems like you should just be playing C&C pick a country kill people win/lose then it resets and you do it all other again, and everyone you fight has differnt tactics and could be easier or harder so it doesn't take away from the "PvP" aspect.
Ultima Online has a faction system alot like that
ashame that the game sucks too much now days for anyone to play factions ..
