I have no such resentment, EQ was what it was and Eq2 is what it is. Completely different PvE games with the same background, of which I suspect EQN will be the same. Do I wish EQ2 was more like the original EQ, perhaps but I still enjoy(ed) EQ2 as it's own game. I enjoyed it before they completely changed it and I enjoy it now. I doubt you will find many resentful EQer's we are a different breed of gamer molded in a different time of Mmorpg's.
I agree I don't feel there is much resentment.
With that said, I feel that separate platforms will lead to different communities over time (for the same game). The 'power play' of which is better will be in full force. Smedley did elude to the fact that EQN would be on the PS4, and that that the servers would be separated.
Hmmnnnn,
I guess the sense of superiority in EQ1 players might just be my take on pride in their game of choice. I don't know why it just seemed to me that there was some kinda resentment for the other two games in the series or a sense of superiority or entitlement. It might be that people just favour features of the older game or that it actually was better, seeing as it's spoken of so well and people harken back to those days so fondly.

Everyone I know that still plays EQ1, which is a good handful, doesn;t really care at all about EQ2, they have no such resentment and view it as a completely separate game which it is.
Maybe deep down in your psyche you have that resentment and are projecting it on to others... hehe.
I don't know, I personally enjoy both games from time to time, never got to play EQOA, which I regret so I dont have an opinion on it, but I do think plenty of people from the various EQ camps are excited or at least interested in EQN, I have seen very little negativity on it anyway.
Hmmmnnn, perhaps I am resentful because I never got to play the original game since I was 9 in 1999....You do have a good point here. And I only got to play the second, so I'm all jealous and Freudian and stuff!
Who knows, though I'm glad the general consensus is that everyone is pretty much a happy camper and okay within the community. I guess that just leaves the question that the current EQ faithfuls will welcome the new stream of gamers in EQN, or if they'll see the horde of new players as enemies....Though seeing how friendly the lot in this thread are....Probably going to get along well.

EQ 1 was a better game. EQ2 was just a step in the wrong direction, which is why it never really went anywhere and was an ant in the shadow of WoW.
They'd have done better to just make remake Classic EQ. Half a million EQ players were disappointed with it, and went and played Vanilla WoW instead which was actually much closer to EQ in terms of challenge and harcore raiding than EQ2 (obviously not today). Had SOE not compromised and gone with a game more true to its roots instead of a themepark on rails, they'd most likely have easily been the second biggest MMO. Sure they wouldn't beat WoW with a game that was hardcore like EQ, but with the number of MMO players out there today, they would have at least provided a fun alternative to WoW for the millions of players out there who just can't stand the current brand of generic trivial MMOs.
In that way, you could say some of us may resent EQ2. In reality we resent all the MMO companies who've been chasing their tails trying to be that WoW killer, leaving nothing for the rest of gaming humanity that actually has an IQ over 100.
I have never played EQ1 but been playing EQ2 for 8 years. EQ2 for me is the only MMO even worth playing atm. I fear EQNext will be for super casual players and in the end both EQ1 players and EQ2 players will hate it equally. Hope I am wrong but ... come on.....all games since 2004 are crap!
There will never be a MMORPG worth playing made again for people that want a challenge because its poor business sense to make any game too hard that a player leaves because of it.

Oh well in THAT case, yeah I definitely see the horde's of new gamers as enemies. I don't like the new crop of gamers as a generalization, some are good gamers though. It really all depends on how the new gamers present themselves, in EQ your reputation mattered, I doubt we will ever again have such a community again ... but some of us still hold to that. We'll see ....
Not sure how it can be more casual than EQ2. I haven't played it in a couple years, and I've heard its gotten better, but last time I played it all I saw was WoW with an EQ skin. If EQ Next is more casual than that, we are certainly all doomed.
hahaha. I love Game of Thrones Best thing ever on tv or movies or anything!
There is no real resentment. More of just a difference in game design leading to a preference to one or the other.
EQ1 was huge and had very deep gameplay and alot of player hands on. Not as good graphics due to it's time.
EQ2 changed character development making early and permanent changes to classes which was a big change. It also made crafting feel a bit labored. The graphics were better and they put in more scripted sequence events. There was also alot of voices from npc's. The zones felt bigger with more detail since the graphics of this version were better.
Both EQ1 and EQ2 were good games.
EQ1 had no rivals for a long time. EQ 2 had World of Warcraft and it's expansions to live up to along many other mmo's.
If EQ2 didn't fracture the classes and had a different crafting mechanic I would have never switched to other games since the gaming world was alive and compelling. It takes alot of things linking together well for me to have an enjoyable time.
EQ had a huge learning curve, but it was given small piece by piece over time. EQ2 wasn't as big of a curve.
So there you go. No issues with any versions. Just hopes that EQ Next will be as good as those that have actually seen it believe it is. And that it links together in a compelling and synergistic way. Not asking for easymode game or super hardcore.....something fun and with lot's of depth and a slightly different direction than the usual WoW clones we have all played by now.
Yes it is more casual now by far but it is still for me the place to be.I guess its because of time invested + friends made there and it being my first MMO.It is very easy now compared to how it was at launch and after RoK which was where the level cap went from 70-80 it became easier and easier as not to make it too difficult for new players to catch up I suppose.
Although I still see new players that struggle to get past level 80 or it takes them ages to get to 70.
I not seen very much resentment. However you got to look at what happened previously.
SOE bought out EQ as we call it now EQ1. Then they started work on EQ2 and pushed it out. SOE's original plans showed that EQ1 had a lifespan of 5 years. At that time they thought wrongly that the folks playing EQ1 would love EQ2. Guess what that caused a firestorm. Some folks like me preferred EQ2, and other folks wanted to stay with EQ1, well now you see EQ1 been around a long time and heck EQ2 been around 8 years.
Now we got that same feeling for those of us who remember that little mess up. Now you got EQ2 now that has tons of marketplace items, but the updates lately and the last xpac have left a bitter taste in a lot of folks mouth as in lack of playable content, and messed up itemization. There is a lot of talk about EQ2 is stagnating, and they are not doing much, while putting all their eggs in the EQNEXT basket.
So will history repeat itself.
That is what a lot of discussions have been lately between the guilds I raid withy. You will not see those in the Everquest 2 forums but there has been a lot of talks between different guilds on my server as to what this all means.
People are passionate about what they love, and when anything threatens that, they'll lash out. =p Seriously though, people have different tastes and want different things from games, MMOs are no different. So, of course there will be EQ1/EQ2 people that hate EQN. I personally enjoyed both EQ1 and EQ2 (at launch), and I'm hoping EQN is pretty different in comparison to both EQ games, in terms of gameplay. Most MMOs out today are themeparks, and I am completely burned out on them, I never want to play one again. If EQN isn't as new and different as SoE is claiming, I won't stick around for long, even though it will be F2P.
Why was Everquest so memorable in the beginning?
It wasn't on easy mode like 100s of MMORPGs are since Vanilla WoW gave into the Generation Me
There weren't any vets, Bots, Hacks, l33t Sp43k, n00bs, gold farmers, griefers, PKers, etc...everyone was on the same learning curve
No maps, no guides, no quest helpers, no hand holding, etc...player community had to cooperate and communicate
You couldn't solo the whole game like you can so easily today
Grouping was necessary and even it wasn't on easy mode as it is these days with all the crowd control MOBs are trivialized and ridiculed and often die without any regard whatsoever
MOBs could aggro other MOBs or worse and you could end up with a TRAIN so players had to be careful and vigilant
No auctions houses so players had to gather in real time to sell, trade, and barter instead of posting their wares under other names whilst not even being logged in and purposely affecting the ingame economy as gold farming companies often do...
MMORPGs these days don't have the community atmosphere Everquest did early on
Its not that players who fondly remember the early days of Everquest want them to return as much as they are wanting adventure, community, danger, excitement, enthusiasm, etc...of the good ol days to return somehow, someway
Unfortunately we live in a somewhat advanced technological era with a bunch of entitled "I want it now" brats who are often more interested in a very mundance existence catering to the latest trends/fads without any orignial thoughts or feelings of their own...followers of convention, as the individual is rapidly becoming extinct
I think if anything there is more resentment towards EQOA. I think there is a general view that "that isnt even a real everquest game, PS2?!" like it's a third party game or a madcatz controller on the gamecube, and EQ1 is the gamecube controller.
Even if true, I started out on EQOA and have no hesitation to say I was an Everquest player because I started out on EQOA.
Basically, players get defensive because they think their game is better. A general opinion is that EQ2 was a worse game than EQ1, so if people love EQ2 and dont like EQ1 as much they get labeled as casual. Just how it is, people want their game to be played because they want it to live forever and have more people to play with.
Because it was a lot of people's first MMORPG and many other's first 3D MMORPG. There are a lot of people out there who has similar memories for World of Warcraft.
If you don't think there were any of that in Everquest, your memory is failing you.
Notice after I posed the question you highlighted in RED I went on to explain why it was so memorable and I played day one of launch and for some time thereafter. I also beta tested World of Warcraft and my roommate beta tested Everquest 2 at the same time and we both knew what we wanted to play after realizing they ruined Everquest 2, ugh. World of Warcraft was alot of fun in the beginning which people call Vanilla WoW; I would say after Vanilla WoW everything went downhill from there as developers started catering to the so called casual gamer...hah! Generation Me, Myself, and I was the so called casual gamer...sad but true.
That didn't come until much later after the game was out for a while...I was there and I remember everything so well as it was my first 3D MMORPG. I went on to play Asheron's Call when it was released and returned sometime to Everquest after a couple expansions to see what had changed...alot had changed...too much had changed. Which is why you see stuff like Project 1999.
Lesson of the day: some people like to wallow in nostalgia.
