Jagex also announced that 2012 was its most successful year ever with staff doubling, profits rising and the company ready to expand with more games and territories, including Brazil. The UK developer announced a partnership with Brazil's largest internet service provider, UOL.

To kick start promotion of RuneScape in Brazil, Jagex have signed an exclusive co-marketing deal with UOL, Brazil’s largest internet service provider. UOL, who have swiftly grown to become the leading ISP in Latin America, boast the largest audience in the Portuguese speaking world and will be publishing the game on Jagex’s behalf. Brazilian players will have the same experience as those in the rest of the world but will benefit from local language support and community management provided by the team at UOL.

Really?  Most successful year ever?  I wonder how much of that is directly attributable to Runescape.  I'm sure I could find out but really just too lazy.  My first MMO. Even though I left the game ages ago, I still like the fact the game continues and is actually doing well.

Successful for them, a nightmare for the remaining players of RS.

Don't take this news as 'runescape is doing good'. It isn't. Currently the main game has 46k players plus 16k playing the 2007 version. This is around 3-4 times lower than what the game peaked during the height of its popularity.

And the reason it isn't popular anymore is because they started with microtransactions, dumbed the game down, made it more understandable for 10 year olds, basically removed death penalties, did nothing about the fact that half of the concurrent players are infact bots for gold farming sites.

Another decent game ruined by greed.
