Firefall, don't waste your time or money

codenekocodeneko Member UncommonPosts: 6

I was one of the hopeful founders with two commanders for my wife and myself.  My wife and I play a lot of MMOs... mostly because they are great for coop.  Firefall seemed like it had a lot of potential.  We were having fun unlocking frames, gathering mats for variations of gear, tweaking as we got new mats.  Crafting and the constraint system seemed to provide a lot of meaningful depth.

I ignored the terrible AI, because of the carrots and visuals.  I ignored the horrible UI and buggy client.  I ignored the obvious frame imbalance for the core required activity, thumping.  I ignored the miniscule map that at first seems new and detailed (yet disturbingly abandoned).

No carrots, they have no game.  Yeah they plan to open the map.  Yeah they're adding new mission types.  But what they fail to realize is that other games do "shooting" better.  Better AI, better netcode, better/slimmer UI.  Some suggestions to get your shooter fix:

Blacklight Retribution: good gameplay mechanics, good weapon/gear customization

Microvolts: fun shooter not to be taken seriously

MWO: what I'm personally playing (454 matches so far).  Playing it because it's *fun*... imagine that.

... yeah, these aren't MMOs but R5 just removed what made FF an MMO as far as I'm concerned so might as well go play shooters.

F2P is taking off and the choices are plenty.  Making a blatant hamster wheel isn't going to entice enough people to keep their limited staff salaries paid especially since they're missing the mark on what potential they actually had and are delusional about what is actually fun.  If I were to bet... I'm guessing some time around the release of Titanfall R5 declares bankruptcy again.  Any takers?

As a max price founder myself, i also really regret my founder package.

The game seems great at first, but that will only last you a few days, maybe a week tops.

Theres just nothing about firefall thats going to last you a long time like MMO's normally do, It becomes a very dull grinding experience extremely quickly after you finish what few guided quests are available.

The random events are mediocre at best, you'd be much better off playing and paying for another game.

Firefall just doesn't excel at anything it does, It's mediocre in every last little bit of the design.

Honestly I still enjoy Firefall and have for quite a while. I experience burn out from time to time and will step away for a bit.

If your looking for a questing experience in Firefall you won't find it. The devs have stated repeatedly that they have no intention of making quest content and instead they're focusing on more dynamic content. What is in place at the moment is essentially the first level of that. There is a long way to go before they reach that so it's anyone guess if they actually reach that.

Firefall is still in beta, not the typical "marketing" beta but a true development beta and I can only assume once they go to open beta the same will still hold true. Core systems undergo massive changes and overhauls from time to time so I can only expect that the game we see at "release" is not the same one we are playing today.

Anyway, if you don't like the game fair enough. A lot of people will try it, hate it and then leave. I really looked forward to Defiance and in all honesty I feel that game is the very definition of mediocrity in the MMO genre but truth be told I'm tired of "quests" in online games and ready for something that feels more like a living breathing world.

Anyway just my two cents. I hope you guys find something that you enjoy more but do come back and check the game out in a few months as it does change quite a bit over time. See you on the bounce.

I keep logging in and crossing my fingers for a patch that will 'make it all better'.

That big, magical patch that will add all the NPC's and quests and gear and loot and AI fixes and frame and enemy balance.

Its frustrating because I 'know' this game is going to be awesome, ....if they'd only pull through and roll out some of the stuff they're 'planning' and talking about on thier video update things.  But as it stands, they haven't even done any proper stress tests for the servers.  :(

Its making me nervous, because i'm starting to get that 'Black Prophecy' vibe from this.

(Black Prophecy was a very awesome spaceship MMO from not too long ago that had loads of promise and made me fall in love with it...  only to eventually die from glaring bugs and problems they continued to ignore from closed beta to launch.  They broke thier own game and didn't even care.)

I really hope this shapes up.  Quick.

Its been in beta for an awful long time for there to still be as many problems as there are.

I don't regret my founders, I played a lot of hours and had fun. I don't pay attention to it any more though. If they ever make a game out of it I'll play again, if not...what ever. Lots of other games to play.

I've spent more on games I played less time and had less fun in so I got what I paid for. None of my complaints about the game involve how much I spent.

Fire fall also remeinds me of black prophecy and I wonder if it'll last any longer?

I paid about £10 for my founders($15) and i regret it also, I managed to squeeze 2 months of gameplay out of it so can be argued I got my moneys worth.  Had flu at the time so am claiming insanityimage.  Worked out that currently would take me around 2 years of grinding to fill the bars on 1 frame.  May check back after it goes ob/release to see if the improve it.

Thanks for your advise but I will not be following it. I prefer to try a game out for myself and make my own opinions of the game instead of listening to others opinions of the game.

"Possibly we humans can exist without actually having to fight. But many of us have chosen to fight. For what reason? To protect something? Protect what? Ourselves? The future? If we kill people to protect ourselves and this future, then what sort of future is it, and what will we have become? There is no future for those who have died. And what of those who did the killing? Is happiness to be found in a future that is grasped with blood stained hands? Is that the truth?"

It's funny your mention MWO because that game was the last straw for me in buying "founders" packs.  At least the ones that cost more than a box fee.  Talk about a game that had a lot of potential that fell flat because of being rushed to market.

There is a huge risk whenever someone decides to become a early adopter of a game still in development.  On the one hand supporting a game like Firefall, MWO or even CU early means that lots of titles that probably would otherwise not be produced get made.  On the other hand there is no promise that all that potential you see in the game or the ideas the developers talk about will ever be realized.

Never played Microvolts but I'll +1 on Blacklight Retribution. Its a blast though I haven't been able to play for a while. I liked it also because when you bought an upgrade..scope...barrel..etc..it applied to all guns of a similar type (or it used to anyway) . Unlike other games which make you rebuy shit for each model or variation/color of the same model.

I also really think Ghost Recon Online is really well done though the maps were on the small side. I really liked all I saw about Mechwarrior Online but just wasn't good enough to deal with the "torso"/"legs" independent operation. Its a brilliant mechanic but just not one of which I could get accustomed .Odd because I've always wanted a shooter that would let you work your head camera view independently...to look to the left or right down hallways without turning the whole body. Seems I would suck at it though..lol.

As for Firefall...I really got into it during beta last year and encounter very few bugs...but eventually as they changed stuff..I realized nothing much really changed and most of the time it just seemed like thumper fights made up most of the content. Thump to craft to tweak. Rinse and repeat. Occasionally find a good drop. Use a different Frame from time to time. Boring .imo. Fortunately I never purchased the founders. I learned my lesson from WARZ.lol.

All I can say is I'm playing now and have been for the past 9 months or so. Paid max for founders package and I don't regret it one bit. This game is in a real beta and our feedback makes a difference. I was playing on PTS in Antarctica last night and I'm doing the Sargasso sea today. Wait until OB on the 9th of July and make up your own minds.

    There is NO miracle patch.

95% of what you see in beta won't change by launch.

    Hope is not a stategy.

To the OP: You're an idiot spending that much money on a game that isn't done.

Whoa. Why is he an idiot? You both bought the founders pack...you don't regret it...he does. Not like he didn't give his  reasons unlike  many game detractors.. Glad you found a game you like but no need to be a rude pridge about the whole thing.

You're right of course. His complaints are valid but I just didn't like the " I paid all this money and I'm sooooooo disappointed" schtick. FF is many things to many people.  just feel that when OB comes around most will be expecting the a marketing beta instead of a real one. It makes me sad.

Hell...I was about to buy it early on. Just glad its free so i can go back and give it another chance when it releases.

I am go glad I usually don't buy founder's packages or I would have been raging like crazy. I have been in beta since may 2012.

Firefall went from a shooter with MMO elements to WOW with guns. If you like WOW with guns and a cash shop go right ahead. It seem they are trying to bestest to put players on the progression train, if you like that go. if you like spending hours unlocking new battleframes only to have someone unlock it with crash and can use it in PvP go right ahead. If you like to spend approximately 96 hours unlocking all the parts on 1 battle frame while they are 10 more to go, you will enjoy the game.
