Sounds like a great game but the one-character-fits-all class system kinda worries me. No one is unique and to me being unique is something I can hang my hat on; being just another player you can expect alot of back-seat driving from other players who "know better than you". Expect being relegated to dps role in PUGs and being bullied into playing roles you don't prefer.
This argument is just like arguing politics, to me this class-by-equipment deal is akin to socialism, and not in a good way.
Maybe you havent' read much on socialism, but the comparison isn't really applicable here. No one can force you to play a class/job you don't want to. People don't do that, and you can't even do that in a PUG formed through the duty finder. You are auto-grouped based on role and cannot switch class/job once you are in content. So even if you are a terrible healer or tank, they can't make you go DD.
They might just not want to play with you, but that can happen in any online game. The community in FFXIV is excellent, and the balance is so well done, I haven't seen preference for one over the other. I dont' see any issues with people not being allowed to play something they enjoy.

You cant change roles once your inside a dungeon and most people will prolly focus on one or two classes and a job to level up. If your other classes and jobs arent high as your main in levels than they cant really force you to change to any class/job. As someone from FF11 which had a job system too I went all the way to max level being only the Job I wanted to be and everything in that game after 15 was group based. the only other jobs i leveled was the one i used as a subjob like warrior or ninja. My main was Dark Knight and later Blue Mage when that came out.

See? And in FFXI DRK was not preferred by the community for a lot of content for long periods of time. The balance in that game is one of its weaker points, but FFXIV seems to do much better (so far).
The only problem I have with the game is the quests.. I read a few of the first quests, but after a while I just skipped all the text and went on my merry way to complete them. I liked the questing in Swtor because of the voice acting.. here it just feels too quiet

Yeah, well, maybe I worry too much... I should have kept my mouth shut but I was one of those guys back in the day that was proud of my one-role unique class in EQ.
This setup's not for me I guess. I recall with RIFT and its multiple-build system lots of moans and groans when players were "asked" to use certain builds by other party members and it happened more often than you would think. Community is community and I am not going to buy that this particular community is any more excellent than those in other MMO's especially considering that the game hasn't even been released live yet.
No room here to go into the Socialism comparison other than to mention that Alexandre Vinet defined socialism simply as "the opposite of individualism".
There is a reason why all these new "mmos" are failing, is because they lack a lot of what made the old MMO's so good, and special. So I think this is a good thing, that they are keeping a more of an "old school" feel.

You realize you weren't the only cleric/wizard etc. in EQ right? You weren't unique in fact you were no different from any other that had the same class selection.
For example if you were a monk and they didn't want a monk you would simply not be invited.
If you are a monk in FFXIV and the group doesn't want another monk, you will simply not be invited.
There is no difference in this regard. You act like people in EQ valued your uniqueness as "whatever class" you chose and just wanted you to be in their group regardless of whether they wanted that class or not because it was you. That has nothing to do with game design.

That's because it's the beta, and they haven't added the voices to the game yet.

you can't be bullied into a role if you dont have it leveled up yet. no one is going to expect you to heal when your healer lvl is 5 and your warrior main is lvl 30. all the system does is to make you attached to your character since you dont need to make alts, you just keep everything on the same character.
Exactly. I'm someone who didn't like having many alts, but this game, like you said, removes the need for 10 alts.
I haven't had as much fun in an MMO as I did in FFXIV:ARR in a very long time. I agree that it isn't a game for everyone and as Ryahl pointed out there are other games out there that will fit other play styles.
So far this seems like the game for me and I'm super excited! I'm looking forward to August!

worst combat system i have ever played.. considering recent action mmorpgs final fantasy is old gen mmo.. tab target + 2.5sec delay for each ability.. gg .. no matter how cool some of the mechanics in-game.. it won't do much when the actual combat mechanics are lame..
I love the people who complain about the ease of the game, and say they uninstalled it so fast. I wonder if these people even took the time to read this article, considering they didn't even take the time to give this game a chance. Yes, the beginning of the game is quite simple, it is the same ole kill X mob, or deliver Y questing that theme parks have been known for. The combat does start off a bit slow, and yes the monsters all die easily. Now, fast forward to level 15, no you can't do this in the game, and you start to understand where Yoshi is taking the game. Like this article has brought up, if you don't pay attention to dialogue, or adjust your combat strategy from quest to quest, or dungeon to dungeon, you WILL fail. The game is a blast, especially for a theme park, and I can't wait to get to the higher level content, just to see how much better it gets.
You do realize that at level 50 our GCD will be less than 2 seconds right? Oh wait, I bet you are one of those beta testers that doesn't actually read the forums, or report bugs, or do anything worthwhile. You play to test the game for yourself. Tell you what, before you go running your mouth, bad mouthing a game, go read about it. Level 50 will have a much lower GCD, and not only that, it has been discussed by Yoshi himself why the GCD is the way it is. I am not going to explain it to you, go find the developer letter regarding it. Once again see my above post, people bad mouthing the game after playing it for 15 minutes. The game develops itself just like you develop your character, if you want everything handed to you from the get go, don't play this game, if you want an easy leveling experience, no group play, and basically another WoW clone, don't play this game. It essentially brings the Multiplayer, and thinking aspects back to the MMO genre.

by the time your 50 the GCD will be much less than 2.5 because you get gear that lowers the GCD as you progress.
Great review Ryahl. A big step up from your alpha coverage. I really appreciate your indepth take on most of the game elements without the bias of most game columnist. Looking forward to your future articles on FF14 and hope you enjoy open beta.

Had a blast in the 2nd Beta, like a lot of people making comments I, too, am trying to play only a little in this 3rd current phase. Can't wait for release, the physical collectors edition look great too.
This game has what newer MMOs for the past 7 years have been missing. Longevity based on progression systems. Real simple. It's why the MMO genre is so popular but people keep thinking it's for other reasons and making short, shallow games that never live up to what they could be because the devs miss the all important aspect of give your players tons of progression options and they will love your game, mix it with awesome graphics and music and a nice UI and controls and people will be happy to pay to play.
GW2 is an example of a company thinking they had the answers to the ultimate MMO but they missed the most important aspect. Progression Mechanics via a large number of gameplay options.
Of course, it also helps to have great writing and Square's nack for storytelling. But that's just the cherry on top.

I have played the game, its a lot of fun. Nothing groundbreaking, but a good time is to be had.
I like the old style MMOs. Never really figured out why they all tried something new and different, when the formula was working.
If you miss MMOs. If you like FF. If you want to play a game for a good story. This is the game.
Bingo! The Classic feels.
