So I've been an MMORPG player for a long time. I've played a ton of them. Most of my time was spent on World of Warcraft, on and off, since it came out. In the last year I've grown basically.. dead to most of these MMORPG types. World of Warcraft grows boring after half an hour of leveling or dungeons. Rift is the same, really.
I tried Guild Wars 2 and while the world itself was incredible and breathtaking, I found that the character customization fell short and leveling grew into a grind after awhile. Guild Wars 2 was supposed to be the MMO that would steal my soul, but now I can't get back into it.
More lately I've tried Darkfall (too grindy, too ugly), Neverwinter (poor character customization, far too pay for ease), and Planetside 2 (repetitive, seems hard to make a difference). I even tried Dragon's Prophet, Blacklight, and several other free MMO type games that I can't remember.
What I'm looking for, I guess, is something different. Good combat, strong character customization with a good class system, and pretty. It doesn't have to shake the world; I just want something to play that'll hold my attention and suck up some time. It doesn't have to be free. Anyone out there that can help me find something?

Tera is going to have the active combat you're looking for. Everything else like questing and crafting still follows the same mechanics as WoW.
Ryzom is going to have some interesting customization.
The closest thing to having everything on your list would be Smite. You said nothing about being a real MMO, nothing about PvE, and similar. But like any Moba outstanding customization, interesting class system, good combat, and possibly pretty depending on if you like it or not.

It's questions like this that make me wish so hard that Auto Assault was still around. It was very unique and a breath of fresh air in the fantasy-oversaturated MMO market. Out of all the MMOs I've played so far, Auto Assault makes the top of my list, every time.
Post-apocalyptic vehicular combat. I loved every minute I spent playing the game, and I gladly paid the subscription fee with no regret.
And of course, EVE Online is definitely a much different direction in the genre. I played that one as well, albeit not for very long, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I would second the thing about Smite. I just started playing a few days ago and am having a blast. I never played a moba before, but I must say the gameplay makes for some quick and easy to get into PvP.
It's too bad Planetside 2 got repetitive for you. Have you tried joining an outfit or rolling with a platoon? It takes the whole game onto a different level when you are in a good platoon that has someone who knows what they are doing leading it and directing everyone with the in-game VOIP.
