How excited were you when EQ 2 came out?

ShiotcrockShiotcrock Member Posts: 87

I was pretty stoked when EQ 2 came out the problem was the game was so buggy and my new graphics card couldn't even play the thing. What made me quit at level 9 was the grind of slowly leveling I later came back a few months later and things improved.

I hope this thing is twice as popular as Planetside 2 which should be easy to pull off.

I wasn't real excited, I was a long time EQ player, and EQ2's familiar zone layout (I know it was the same world for the most part) kind of took the wonder away from me.  I couldn't get my wife to play it and she was a long time EQ player also, so that didn't help.  We didn't like WoW either, so it wasn't that we chose it over EQ2.

EQ2 just never clicked with me, and I was very anti-instance at the time, that is what drove me from EQ, was tired of the instances, so the EQ2 instanced housing put me off, it felt like a secret closet that only I know about to throw stuff.  I would of rather just had more bank space than instanced housing (I know a lot of people love it though, so I would rather overall they keep it if it has to be instanced for those people, it isn't all  about me).  If someone could put UO's housing system into a 3d mmo, that would be pretty awesome, while I am on housing.

So yeah, I was a little weary of EQ2, but I was hopeful, it just never worked out that I played it much.

I remember being so excited.  I built a super rig for its time (to find out that the game still ran like crap).  Made it to like level 20 something and quit.  The starting cities that were so seperated into burroughs were disgusting.  The linked mobs, the not being able to buff anyone else that wasn't in group, and the instances were killers for me.

It was the first mmo i experience with voice acting and it kinda blew my mind at the time.

Not really excited. I was still playing EQ and/or Daoc at the time. I was more excited about WoW coming out, which I enjoyed for a while, although not as much nor as long as EQ and Daoc. I did enjoy EQ2 later on, but no where near the level of EQ and daoc.

I always thought it was too early for a sequel of EQ at the time.  Would have liked it maybe 2-3 years later. I do think though now is a great time for EQN to be coming soon.

    Wasn't excited at all about it actually;

Roommate was beta testing EQ2 and I was beta testing WoW...needless to say we both ended up playing WoW.

I never participated in EQ2 whatsoever from how bad it looked in beta (close to release) and everyone was saying it sucked...especially former Everquest players.

I was actually more stoked for Vanguard when it was being hyped as the savior to ol Everquest players and look what happened there...

I had moved from EQ1 to DAoC as well, so I made a brief shift to EQ2 shortly after its launch.  I say brief because EQ2 at launch was really a mess on a lot of levels.  Crafting, for example, just killed me with the tedium of subcombines.  So..I went and played vanilla Wow for a year (had a blast!) and re-visited EQ2 after that monumental update that seemed to really shift the game to a better place for many people.  I then bounced between EQ2 and Wow for a couple of years until WoW just seemed to really degrade, then I stuck with EQ2.

As for excitement level for EQ2, hmm, not really so much.  I think the difference now, for EQN, is because the market has been so completely horrible for years and years.  People are just utterly despondent with the whole genre and desperate for something, anything, that is good.  EQN might be that game for a lot of people.  At least, a lot of people are hoping it will be that game.

Wow great topic and a break from the endless EQN debate lol. I was very excited about EQ2 but at the time there was a lot of talk about that little up start mmo called WOW in game and on the forums.

I had also been following WOW because the game didn't have an beta NDA so you could go to the actual beta forums and read threads and watch vids of the actual game throughout beta. It all looked very appealing but so did EQ2 even though you had to rely on leaks because the game had an NDA.

EQ2 was a pretty harsh game at release, not like EQ but you leveled pretty slow after you left the island. The graphics were very cutting edge and for many they were a bit to much for their systems to handle. I loved Freeport and i made a Kerra bruiser as my first character.

My main put off was how instanced and closed off the world was, zones, zones, and more zones, it really was a bit of a shock coming from EQ. Even though LDON had bought instancing to EQ it was still very open compared to EQ2. One thing EQ did that BioWare tried to claim a first was nearly full voice acting, it was a true marvel and very impressive.

The game also had no maps other than your city which i actually liked but many thought it was a pain. Going outside the cities was pretty tuff as well, it was best to level up as much as possible before leaving your faction city. EQ2 was also a grouping game like EQ, yup you better of had a group if you really wanted to get ahead.

EQ2 is a great mmo and no other mmo comes has more content or an instanced housing system that comes close. It has the best races and class variety of any mmo out today imo.

I ended up playing EQ2 alongside EQ& WOW which i left just before battlegrounds came out, i still log into EQ2 today and have all expansions.

No where near as excited as I am now for EQN.   When EQ2 came out, EQ1 was really still in a rather full swing.   EQ1 was still more than tight knit, closed groups grinding end game content as it is now.   It was still a populated active world, so I was less excited to drop everything for an EQ2.   Now EQ1 is all tight knit closed groups, and EQ2 was just not my cup of tea, nor is any WoW clone, so I am INCREDIBLY excited for EQN, especially with all the buzz about sandbox after seeing original SWG :)

Truthfully, I have never been excited about any game (MMO or not) like I am for EQN right now.

If I want a world in which people can purchase success and power with cash, I'll play Real Life. Keep Virtual Worlds Virtual!

I was excited for it, and I enjoyed it a lot the first few months before I burned myself out by playing too much. I had a high end pc, so it wasn't a huge deal for me.

I wasn't very excited, played it for couple of years, quite enjoyed it but still consider it to be a weak shadow of EQ. For me EQ downfall started with PoP expansion and I was seeking a fresh start in EQ2 but never found it ofc.

I was excited for it but it felt so fake and plastic to me. The way the classes were handled was a let down for me also. I was expecting more of an EQ1 feeling and it didn't have that at least not to me. I'm more excited about EQN though now.

I was looking forward to it at the time, but I didn't like what I was reading in the magazines about having to work up to your class type and make your way through the archetypes. Out of luck I managed to get into the WoW beta and it blew me away because I was looking for a slightly faster game than EQ1 (I didn't have much time to game until college) and I loved the idea of world PvP.

I made attempts at EQ2 several times when I was bored of WoW, but nothing ever really stuck and I came up with Alt-itis often getting bored within a few weeks of play.

Comparatively EQN is my biggest hope I've allowed myself to feel for a while. I saw the writing on the wall for D3, GW2 and SWTOR while in beta. Unfortunately if EQN doesn't pan out, it might be time to hang up my keyboard and just play single player games. There's nothing even remotely successful looking announced in the next 3-5 years mmo-wise.

I was not excited at all as I had played it in beta and realized it was being released a year early.  Pre-beta  I was very excited about EQ2 and very much disliked WoW.  Then I played the WoW stress test weekend I think in August and at the same time I got into EQ2 beta.  I quickly relaized WoW was a very well made, complete and polished game while EQ2 which I wanted to like was unfinished and lacked that fun factor.  Although EQ2 had good crafting.

WoW pretty much killed EQ2.  Especially when they scheduled their open beta to start a few days before EQ2's release.  At that point EQ2 was pretty much a dead game.  Although SOE should be commended for spending so much time and resources after release  to redo and finish EQ2 making it a much better game.

Yeah if EQN doesn't cut it I'm not sure I'll return to the MMO scene for quite awhile. I'm tired of trying and being dissapointed.

Ya, I thought pretty much everyone was disillusioned after EQ2 beta.  As a long time EQ player, I choose WoW over EQ.  Both were moving in the same direction, but WoW was more polished.  Didn't take long to figure out both games went down the same path to triviality, so ultimately it didn't matter which I choose.  It was back to emulated servers for me so I could enjoy the classics again in a state before they were transformed to themeparks.

Rinse and repeat from years 2004-2013.

Wasn't even on my radar. Played EQ for a few years and while waiting for Shadowbane, decided to give DAoC try. Played it for a few years, loved it,  until WoW came and drank their population milkshake.

WoW had a good mix of PvE/PvP that I enjoyed for many years to come until the endless grind caught up to me. I remember hearing a lot of complaints about the launch of EQ2 and Vanguard for that matter, on top of not really diggin the art style, I didn't even think about giving another EQ game a try until I heard about EQN.

Kind of hope it gives me some of what I wanted Shadowbane to be, but I never even gave it a try due to enjoying DAoC so much. I do remember being very excited for SWG, but waited to see how it went instead of running out to buy it. Ended up playing it a little and enjoyed some of the game mechanics, but I couldn't get into playing in the SW universe, even though I'm SW fan.

Hopefully all the excitement I had for Shadowbane, SWG, and now EQN will finally see something worthy.

I was excited for EQ2, pre-ordered it but did not buy the CE

    i enjoyed EQ2 for a few weeks

when WOW launched, I left EQ2 to do WOW for 6 weeks  (I didnt like the ezmode leveling in WOW)

I returned to EQ1 until Guild Wars launched in April 2005

none of my friends liked GW1 but it was my favorite online game

the more I read and saw of it ,the less excited I became.

waited till the game was cheap, bought it,and basically confirmed that it didnt deserve the "Everquest" title.

I was excited and I also liked it for a bit when playing it too.   At the time, traveling around and getting/completing quests was fun because it hadn't been worn out yet for me.

WoW had come out about the same time and I played EQ2 first.

I was hugely excited about EQ2 when it was coming out. I was in my second year of college, and both me and my roommate had played EQ1. We ended up getting burnt out of EQ1 a little before EQ2 was getting released. After hearing what EQ2 was supposed to be like, we both started play it. Unfortunately due to bugs and wonkiness neither of us stayed for long. I just hope EQN doesn't fail as bad as EQ2 did.

Not excited.  It looked like a WoW clone.

    Is that for real? or....

WoW and EQ2 released around the same time.  I remember asking everyone "Warcraft or EQ2?" to see which they would go with.
