If you are willing to wait an hour or 2 (and you have cable internet) you can dowload Anarchy Online (the original) which is free. Kindomofloathing is a fun text based game (kingdomofloathing.com) there are others check the list above... I know i hate the list too but try it anyways
Id say you should try Anarchy Online. Have the patience though to go through Newbie Island, since its pretty empty. Though Ive heard theres alot more people after that. Alot of customisation to your character as well.
If you want a more complex game, then yeah I'd say Anarchy Online. Its much more group-oriented opposed to the loner style of RS (which you may well find, as I did, you like better). Also you essentially can't multiclass. This again does not bother me at all because after trying Rubies of Eventide (another free game) I realized that I found having a definite class to follow and being an integral part of groups to kill higher level monsters is a actually a lot more fun.
Try a Martial Artist for consistent damage over time and self-healing and a bit more solo-ing. Enforcers are also an option but you have to understand your tanking roll in that profession. Those are both fairly easy professions to start up.
Eh, only, this is a community game (kinda sorta, I don't know about the Clams but I've seen some intense fighting in Omelet-Tek OOC). There isn't any point in showing up if you're going to beg, kill steal, and ninja loot, ask people to help you get Jobe armor whilst playing the free version and have less than several million credits, and/or generally behave like people's stereotype of a RuneScape player.
Settlers of Ganareth can be considered a free mmorpg, although it's really a prelude to the mmorpg Dark and Light. It won't include all features of DnL, but it may be worth a try.
I got a kick out of KnightOnline for a little bit. Althought like 1/3 of the people speak turkish (still to this day can't explain why) it was still alot of fun. Kind of Everquest 1 and Guild Wars mix. Alot of camping if you want good items / xp - and there is a very neat pvp system (HUGE WARS) like hundreds of actual people. I'd try to get in on a new server though if you can - cuz if you try the pvp stuff on an old server you'll get raped. Also I heard rumor that Flyff is pretty fun ... gonna give that a shot next ... more to come soon.
If you want to pay for a game Guild Wars is a winner - no cost to keep playing. I've had my account from the start and I still play it occasionally just to kill others. (See the bottom - my doom IS really destruction)
Free ones to steer clear from ...
Rakion - says mmorpg ... and theres no RPG about it. If you enjoy JUST pvp and character advancement then this game is for you. If you like interaction, fighting, and exploring this is not for you. The game runs on stages (i.e. stage 1 ... you walk through a tomb and kill things - the better time you have the bigger bonus you get) and if you dont have a great ping rate you can't play with your friends who DO. It automatically kicks you from their game so you don't lag them.
Martial Hero's - this game was kinda a cheap time killer. The controls are terrible but I really love the idea of the genre. I played it for like a day because I craved more content. Graphics left more to be desired and the movements of your characters were like ... 10 frames. It looked like if South Park picked up swords .... unsheath - raise - chop ... repeat.
DarkEden - this game made me sit and wonder ... why put the time and effort into making a game ? It was 2 1/2 dimensional - meaning similar to diablo. I played this one for like a day also.
I been playing Silkroad online for about 3-4 days now. So far it's pretty decent. The graphics is nice and the control is very basic mouse point and click. Kind of like Lineage 2. It's one of the best free mmorpg right now I think, but the game lag a little. I also tried Storm rider online(Fung wan online) last week; I feel like I'm the online person in the game; it's pretty much dead. I also tried Martial Heroes, it was okey, but too many bugs. I have to suggest Silkroad online.

Try Tibia. I love this one. The graphics are very simple but the gameplay takes a lot of fun. Check Tibia.com.
I'm fond of Wyvern myself.
2D, Level + skill system, complete character customization, pretty big world, and pvp.
Now with 57.3% more flames!
