Vid card issue?

Posting on behalf of my husband

he has an alienware m14x r1

i7 2630 @ 2.00 GHz

8gb ram

Nvidia GTX 555m

running win 7 home premium service pack 1

Couple of weeks ago we did a fresh windows install and installed vid card drivers straight from nvidia (320.18)  instead of from dell and he started getting micro freezes and on occasion he'd get a graphics glitch that looked almost like you'd hit the screen with a hammer, after which it would go white.   As soon as Nvidia released new drivers he updated to them, which fixed the white screen issue but made the freezes worse.

After a system rollback gone wrong he formatted his drive and started over, downloading vid card drivers from dell (306.97) which are the same drivers he had before the first windows reinstall.

He is now unable to get more then 20fps in aion, when previously he was running around 50ish, or more then 50fps in scarlet blade, when he used to get around 110.

Anyone have any idea what the issue may be?

And yes we both know that he needs to upgrade and will be building a new computer in the next couple of months so please don't just suggest that.

Thank you

It's possible that it uses a custom driver from Dell - have you checked their support page to see if there is a proprietary driver for that laptop?

It may be the same base driver from nVidia with some quirky Dell-only type thing (like a power cap or custom clock speeds or something) - this is very common with laptops.

Did your screen look somewhat like this?

If so, your video card overheated.  It is likely permanently damaged.  No driver update can fix it.
