Arena Net manipulates Facebook's liking system for in game rewards

Surprised this isn't already grounds for a discussion point. What are people's views on game companies offering in game rewards for helping advertise their products out of the game?

It seems like a decent strategy: make your own players advertise your game to save on advertising costs and you pixel some free items for this to sweeten the pot, making it simple but effective. The achievement locusts that are pretty rampant in that game will be sure to do this just for increased points, which I don't see anything wrong with this. I'd rather have guild wars 2 spend their money in game on updates but we'll see :)

Well would you rather have them spend their budget on marketing to boast nubers ingame rather than put that money into the updates? not sure what answer you want to hear exactly..myself personally i'd take the updates anyway and let you players be the drones messing around on facebook on their smartphones while they're bored at work hating life :P

Is this actually a thread? They're promoting on a social media site like any other big game and giving player's cool stuff for showing support, how in any definition is that manipulating? No one is saying You have to like them on facebook, and you aren't missing out on much by not doing so.

A company manipulating facebook likes to promote their web presence? No way.. shocking..  /sarcasm off

Social media is a "marketing tool" for big business and companies will do whatever they want to manipulate you with it. Nothing new here, this kind of thing has been going on long before facebook.

Companies do this all the time. I'm not really sure if I think it's ok or not, but I am pretty sure I don't care. Who takes FB Likes seriously, anyway? Half of them is probably a result of campaigns like this.

By the way, I don't think this qualifies as viral marketing, because the point of viral marketing is making something that people will share with other people, who'll share it with other people, etc. so it spreads like a virus. This is unlikely to spread much, because people usually don't Like things just because their friends did.

Is it not common practice ? dragon's prophet had something like this, reach 10k likes and random chance of getting 10 beta keys.

Other mmos i used to play also had this, i'm not being asked to spend money, just like and support a game i play. and they reward us for it. thats all.

Exp events for reaching certain likes , or like us on facebook and win rewards..... get on with the times, it's stupid not to take advantage of low cost mass reach marketing opportunities, its good for the game, its good for the business, and overall good for anyone involved, when done correctly.

Unless they're doing an event where "if we reach x amount of likes, you get y reward"

so people who play gw2 will give their friends link and tell them to like gw2 page even though they dont play it. just so they reach w/e goal arenanet wants to reach so they can get the reward.

either way, this thread is stupid. just looking for a reason to bash gw2. there's plenty legitimate reasons to bash it, this aint one.

I came into this thread with hopes that I would read an article about how ANet made some sort of under the table deal with Zuckrberg in order to adjust the FB "likes"..silly me and my definition of "manipulating".

When did viral marketing become okay?

Since when did it NOT become OK? It is not like they are trying to hide their agenda. I think it is a brilliant idea and shows that their marketing dept are on the ball and aware of how modern marketing works.

Much better then spending 100k (or more likley even more) on a bunch of tv-spots that get you nothing.

This have been a good conversation

Oh, that's true. I guess doing that didn't even cross my mind, but someone might.

When did viral marketing become okay?

When did any form of in your face advertising become okay? We live in a world where we can't step out the door and not be bombarded by them.

I have a friend who will like Smite's facebook page to get me limited edition skins.  She doesn't have a problem with it, and neither do I.

God forbid they start putting toys in kid's meals or offer you prizes for boxtops, that would be crossing the line.

Everything creates huge amounts of negativity on the internet, that's what the internet is for: Negativity, porn and lolcats.

I'm with this guy, I'd rather see ArenaNet get more players, than McDonalds give people more diabetes.

Because it is Anet? if it was any other company it would be lynched by now.

Except many companies do it, and have done it. This isn't new, so why complain about it? I'm actually shocked this is the first time Arena Net has done something like this, I thought they would have back in January.

Actually, didn't ANet do something like this before? IIRC they had a "like us and we'll post pictures on FB" campaign during beta or before it.

I didn't say other companies don't do it. I am just talking about the double standards. You have no idea the hate companies get around here for anything related to facebook.
