I have very little knowledge about this game and I have some questions before I actually purchase the game.
1. Does the game have PVP?
2. How does the leveling system work?
3. Are using ability/spells something like pressing 1-9 0 - = or is it like Kingdom Hearts?
4. Does it require you to do the same dungeon over and over again just to get the equipment you want?
5. Can you make more than one character without getting charged extra?
and most importantly
6. If you cancel the account and not play for a few months/years and decide to play again, do I keep my characters?
I had more questions but I forgot what they were.
Comments
1. Nope, none at all not even duels
2. Find a group, grind for hours killing monsters
3. Kingdom Hearts
4. No.
5. No.
1) Basically, no. There's Ballista, which is a set-piece PvP contest that runs on a set schedule, but that's it. No PvP in the game at large.
2) You kill mobs to get exp. There are a few other ways to get exp, but they are very few and far between; essentially killing mobs is the only way to advance. Quests and missions do *not* get you exp. The amount of exp you get off a mob is determined by its relative level to you; you can get a rough idea of what that level is by using the check command on the mob. Mobs that are too far below you will check as "Too Weak" and not give you any experience. If you are killing a series of mobs and they all check "Even Match" or higher and do it fast enough, you get experience chain bonuses for the second and subsequent kills, the bonuses rising the longer you can keep the chain going.
3) Spells can be accessed through a menu, you can type out the command to cast the spell, or you can create a macro that casts the spell, which can then be accessed with alt or ctrl and a number. I haven't played Kingdom Hearts, so I can't say if this is anything like KH's user interface.
4) Sometimes, but not as often as other games. Most of even the highest level equipment is freely sellable, so you can do various things to earn money and buy it, instead.
5) No. Each extra character is another $1 a month I'm afraid. No way around that.
6) If you cancel your account, you'll be able to reactivate with everything as you left it for one year. After that, everything's gone.

Oh ok, I am a player of World of Warcraft and the game design is really fun in that, along with 5-10 man instances/dungeons along with 20-40 man instances/dungeons. Also my first MMORPG game that I played.
What makes this game fun? Story? Alot of Content?
How often are there updates?
Are there alot of mini-updates?
I mean coming from WoW I had to run the same 5-10 man dungeons around 30 times just to get the gear, and 20-40 man dungeons which only resets once a week and we got to do that over and over for many months just to get something we need.
Are each dungeons in FFXI require different kind of strategy? (kiting, rotations, etc?)
What are the stats in FFXI and how do they work? Coming from WoW, since I play a warlock in that game stamina just gives me more hp, intellect just gives me more mana and a very small chance to crit with spells, there are gears that gives you chance to resist certain magic e.g.+20 Fire Resist. Spell Penetration gear which will lower resist to a target. Str would increase attack power, Agility would increase melee critical chance and dodge chance (except for a certain class which also increases attack power), spirit will allow how fast your mana regenerates, etc. Just want to see how stats work in FFXI.
In fact are Gear and stats really important?
Yes, there's lots of content, and it's good, IMHO. There's maybe half-a-dozen big storylines.
Generally, they update once a month.
There's not really updating between the monthlies, which is just as well, since the game does come down for several hours when they do one.
Anything in FFXI that is instanced doesn't have any reset time at all, but you do need beastmen's seals/kindred seals for the Burning Circles, and those come slowly (you start getting them as soon as you start playing, so DON'T THROW THEM AWAY!). The big notorious monsters have spawn times no longer than a day, but aren't instanced and are heavily camped. The counterpart to the biggest raids in WoW is Dynamis. Now, I'm still a long way from the endgame, so I haven't seen any of this for myself, but my impression is that the only thing in Dynamis that you'll work months and months for is a relic weapon, which are famously difficult. But in a couple of months, maybe, you'll have a few pieces of relic armor. And there are other drops, which are nice. Much of the endgame gear can be bought on the open market. Relic weapons work by getting the base weapon (which is itself worthless) and then getting Dynamis currency to upgrade it through several levels. If you decide you don't want the long haul for a relic weapon, you can sell the currency for good money to people who are.
Yes. As I said, I'm not at that level yet, but what I've heard makes it clear that different high-level mobs require drastically different tactics.
Pretty important, really. Dexterity increases accuracy and improves criticals in melee (and Sneak Attack power for Thieves), Agility improves evasion and increases ranged accuracy and criticals (and improves Trick Attack for Thieves), Strength increases damage, Vitality lessens the damage you take, Intelligence improves the power and accuracy of your black magic, Mind improves the power and accuracy of your white magic and improves your resistance to hostile magic, and Charisma improves your charm chances as a Beastmaster and song effects as a Bard. In FFXI spells and special attacks have associated elements (the eight elements are critical in this game; you'll need to learn about them) and some gear raises or lowers your resistance to certain elements. There's also gear that increase (or decreases) your attack, defense, accuracy, ranged attack, ranged accuracy, MPs, HPs, MP recovery, HP recovery and so on. Also food can help with all this too (food can give critical buffs; don't forget to eat!), and there are spells that buff for all this stuff as well. Gear and stats are important, yeah. In fact, without decent armor, you'll have no DEF and mobs will just chew through you. Even if you're not tank, it's not good if the mob can kill you from full health in one or two shots. Good gear makes you hit noticably harder, keeps you going longer without resting, strengthens your Cures, and so on (but not all at once: knowing what your gear should be enhancing is a part of having good gear--particularly since a lot of gear *hurts* one stat while improving another). Good gear really helps in this game, not only in the actual combat, but in getting parties. FFXI is a group-oriented game; you'll need to get in parties and having good gear helps, although you shouldn't assume that uber gear is automatic pass. There's a lot to know about fighting an FFXI character, and if you're not competent, all the gear in the world won't help.
