Two graphic cards on notebook issue HELP^^

ElikalElikal Member UncommonPosts: 7,912

Ok on my brand new Notebook I apparently have 2 graphic cards, one Intel 4600 and one Nvidia GTX 760m. Now how do I handle that? Is there a way to always make the system use the Nvidia?

Also, when I click the Nvidia it says "The NVidia video settings are not available. You are using no display connected to the GPU of the Nvidia."

I am using Windows 8 btw.

Can I deactivate the Intel chip? Or what do you recommend??

Thanks in advance. :)

EDIT2: OK the error I wrote about earlier is gone. Still: how do I make certain the Nvidia is used not the onboard card??

You have discrete switchable graphics.  The idea is that you use the discrete card when performance matters (e.g., when playing games), and shut it down in favor of the integrated graphics to reduce power consumption when graphical performance doesn't matter.  Video drivers are supposed to handle the switching for you automatically, but it's far from perfect.

Have you tried disabling the Intel video through the device manager?

Your system should turn on the nvidia card when playing games etc

The problem is, you can never actually turn off the intel graphics card since your screen is handled through this card, thus when you forbid the intel card in device manager, your screen will turn off

I know this since I have Nvidia optimus as well and had a lots of struggles with it in the last year

Btw be careful when reinstalling windows..I had them reinstalled in service shop and since then my nvidia gfx card never turned on, no matter how many drivers I installed and how I tried to force it to turn on - I ended up buying new notebook (again with nvidia optimus technology...but everything works fine now, except for win 8 but thats another story haha)

I think I actually spent way more time reading and theorycrafting about MMOs than playing them

You can't disable the integrated graphics entirely or else the monitor won't be able to display anything.  The integrated graphics is what sends the video signal to the monitor.  If you're using a discrete card, then it computes a frame, passes the completed frame over to the integrated graphics, and relies on the integrated graphics to send it to the monitor.

If a game isn't automatically using the nvidia card you can right click the launcher and select which graphics card to use.
