You get storyline right up to 50. Add in the storyline idea behind jobs, it's very story driven. Each class has a Job now so while the storyline to 50 may run the same for all classes, it might not be the same for Job quests and their precession. Also, Keep in mind FF14 has what I still view as some of the best cutscene tech available. You can go to an Inn room and change those cutscenes up later on as well. Suppose you get a cutscene at 9 and your armor is a hodgepodge of junk you gathered up. Strap on your best gear at 50, visit the Inn and relaunch the cutscene and you are now doing it in that 50 Armor. So you can VLog your character in all the cutscenes in what ever dress you desire.

You have the main story (a couple of quests every level)
18 Class stories (quests at lvl 1, 5, 10 and every 5 levels)
City story lines (not sure how often quests are for this, starts at 20)
Any graphical, audio, or gameplay restrictions not seen in other mmos but found in FFXIV can be blamed on one thing. PS3
im pretty interested in the story too. Will it be final fantasy material or standard mmo crap. Tera online had great cutscenes...the story i dont know what the hell was going on lol.
Story is really subjective. You need to experience it yourself to tell whether you like it or not. If you're a fan of other Final Fantasy stories then there's a big chance you'll enjoy this one. Personally, so far I'm loving the story and can't wait to progress the story past LV20. There's so much potential for great stuff to happen. Seeing familiar names and monsters from the FF series makes me all giddy inside. The story just seems so big and you are this important part of it, and as the story progresses your role becomes greater and greater. I wish I could say more, but that would be spoiling it. Seriously, do the main story quests and that will make you love this game.

I've only played to lvl 15 so far but I've been enjoying the story very much.
Those quests make the game not feel like an normal MMO story but like the story you normally get from a reg console non-mmo rpg game. I find them very intriguing.
But like mentioned above you really need to experience it for yourself and decide.
I am a strange bird when it comes to story in my mmorpgs. I can't stand a forced story or direction. I hated TOR for this reason, it was way too story driven for my tastes. So far, however, I am loving the story in ARR. It's extremely well written in my opinion, but not overdone or the sole focus of the game, at least not to the point where everything else seems neglected.
I have been enjoying the story too, kind of wish I played version 1.0 to be a part of the cataclysm and the original warriors of light. The thing I love about it is the nostalgia it brings back from past final fantasies like how the empire is similar to the one in FF6 with their magitek and the Judges from Tactics and FF12. The mystery men in the black hoods and the people sent to investigate each city with their unusual technology keeps me wondering too.

The story is building up to be decent so far, though in these early stages I haven't seen anything too ground-breaking for the franchise - though the whole thing is not available in beta. Like others have mentioned, there are a lot of recurring motifs from past FF games. I'd add that there are some overall very similar themes too (pretty much every FF has ended up with you beginning by having you enter into some social conflict, usually against a dominant antagonistic power, eventually unveiling how that power is a front for a greater evil magical power, you becoming a warrior of 'the crystal' and contending against some kind of false God; this one follows the same lines and seems to have you fighting many such false Gods...). Of course, FF has always been about how this story is told more than the story itself. So far the game does a good job of making you feel as though you are caught up in a greater spectacle unfolding in the world (though it can't help but be a little Mary-Sueish with the player character). We'll see later on how things end up.
It progresses quickly if you focus on completing the main story quests, but considering you'll need to level to 50 and overcome many group challenges to see the whole thing, expect it to be a somewhat measured narrative pace. There is not even enough of it in beta to get anywhere near the climax, so I couldn't give you an hourly estimate, even if it didn't vary based on your gameplay style.
Edit: I should add that this game is unique for an MMO in that it has the storyline of an entirely separate MMO behind it (version 1.0) - you'll want to look up the storyline/cutscenes for that too.
It's shaping up to be a typical Final Fantasy story, both in writing and presentation. Whether that means something good or bad is pretty much a matter of your own experience.
