Your thoughts on EQN's statement.

percyuspercyus Member Posts: 30

I've noticed many threads talking about EQ Next, more importantly, how its claimed to be the biggest sandbox MMO to hit the market.  I myself have many ideas as to what this means but I'm here today to respectably hear what you all believe to be, or hope to be, true for this statement by Sony Online Entertainment.

As a heads up, before you post, keep in mind that the definition for a sandbox themed game is purely the freedom of choice to tackle different situations on a nonlinear path, compared to the linear path of a theme park game where it is coded for a specific path set or story line.

When did that become definition of Sandbox? Lol. Sandbox is player made content. Nothing more nothing less.

the same voice that called EQNEXT a sandbox also called Everquest a sandbox. So I wouldn't put too much into their words.

Big companies like Sony have people who went to college to learn how to sway the consumer base with words and media. I wouldn't put too much focus into anything they say without evidence to back it up.

When did STO and NWO become sandboxes?

We both know if you asked 100 people we would get 100 definitions.

I say wait and see or forget about it until release.  facts are better than these little marketing blurbs.

No one can agree on what Sanbox really means. Some people call a game like the Elder Scrolls a sandbox while others call it a themepark. When you think about what Sandbox implies there should be some kind of "sand" with which you can build right? Even Ultima Online is not a sandbox based on that idea. Since you can't really play with the sand but merely place objects on top of it.

People do agree.  The games they reference simply aren't 100% sandbox or not sandbox.  Most MMOs contain some sandbox elements, even if they are not 'sandbox games'.

Heres some examples of sandbox elements:

    CoH: Mission Editor

    EVE: economy, pvp, skill system

SWG: player cities, player housing, player vendors, skill system, quest creator, item crafting, non-combat professions (image designer, dancer, musician, crafter, leader, ranger)

Ultima Online: Placement of permanent objects in the world, open pvp, crafting

PotBS: player owned cities, user submitted art (flags, 3D ship models)

Wurm Online:  World modification (movement of trees, dirt, walls), building construction and ownership

    Minecraft: World modification, crafting

Archeage: open skill/class system, player housing, world modification (trees, buildings), crafting

    Skyrim: open skill system

Most sandbox elements have commonalities such as player choice, world openness, and world permanence.  The elements people have described in posts above mine are good examples of sandbox elements.

Interesting to see what Smedley shoves out the door in a few weeks. But I think EQN is using the definition of sandbox to mean simply "not a themepark." Doubtful they mean player-made content or FFA PVP.

Luckily, i don't need you to like me to enjoy video games. -nariusseldon.
In F2P I think it's more a case of the game's trying to play the player's. -laserit

Well remember they did buy the StoryBricks thing. And EQ2 got the dungeon-builder thing. (Haven't played with that myself). I would not be surprised to see something like these integrated. Really, it'd be a rather waste if they didn't.

If they can couple those with vastly-craftable items and user housing, they can probably get away with calling it a sandbox. I don't think the inclusion of PvE quests etc makes it "not a sandbox" (since EVE has PvE missions and most people consider that a sandbox), but unless EQN comes down clearly in sandbox-land, we're just arguing definitions.

And really if you have to argue definitions to qualify as something, it is by definition arguably not that something, so you already have a losing battle.

I'd be happy if EQN was a next-gen Everquest with a ton of content and better graphics (and framerate!) than EQ2. User-generated content would be a win, of course.

Me personally, if you really want to look at a true out and out sandbox mmo then it's Wurm Online. It has everything you would find in a game like DF but it also has everything you would find in minecraft and more.

It's an out and out sandbox game, for me it's the ultimate definition of a sandbox mmo.

I think that maybe EQN will have lots of areas where you can build stuff, however, game play or it didn't happen.

    gameplay > graphics
