So the picture on the main forum suggests things have changed substantially since the original EQ days.
Things I noticed that are different here are the races. This is a big deal since in the original EQ the Vah Shir were not introduced until the expansion of Shadow of Luclin where they lived on a moon due to being translocated by the Erudites.
So this got me to thinking, what if this is EQ earlier in the timeline when the Vah Shir were still the ruling class on Odus.
Another thing missing is Trolls and Ogres. There is no platemail and most armors look more primative and savage in a way as if plate was not a choice of this time period.
Some other interesting facts are the exclusion of any strait magic wielding characters. It's as if magic in this timeline might be a more difficult thing to conjure and perhaps there will be limited magic use and imbued magical weapons.
Also in this new timeline perhaps orcs will be a playable race as well as the Kerrans from the original EQ who lived on the Isle of Kerra off of Odus.
All of this is very very interesting to me. The lore behind EQ runs deep and this is what I believe may be happening is the timeline is being either altered or thrown back quite a ways. Makes me 100X more curious about what will be announced on Aug 2.
What are your theories?

I was just noticing that the new Firiona looks really young and maybe EQN is a prequel?
EDIT: AH hastily read your post, I didnt know that Kerra were in EQ1, now it makes sense.

Who knows if that's still true, but it sure seems like it.
I hope to see it back in time: before EQ1.
When the gods were petty and cruel, and there was only one man who could challenge their power... wait...
Seriously, I hope to see lots of deity involvement and such. I'd like to see them heavily participating in the world and screwing with the things. I'd like to see wars between the races, etc.
Like you said, OP, EQ is very rich in lore. I hope they take advantage of it and do some great things with it.
There's so much backstory that it makes the most sense to go backwards. To a time before the players killed half the gods and conquered the universe. There's so much stuff already written and detailed that they could cover.
Wow that's a great find. Thanks for posting this. Seems to follow fairly close to what this new pic on the EQ Next site is hinting towards. I know devs like to give little easter eggs and hints out as things get more close to reveal day so this all adds up. Happ Happy!!
From a lore perspective from the original Everquest, the completion of the Plane of Time caused Druzzil Ro to rewind the timeline to preserve the gods and prevent Something Bad From Happening. It is quite possible that we could off shoot from a separate timeline at that point with the planes barred to us and all of the old adventurers lost and trapped in the planes and no longer impacting the world. I think from the context of EQ2 the timeline they followed would of not included the time-rewind which then caused the gods to be lost and the Shattering to happen to the world.
With time magic anything is possible.
What I don/t get is where the hell are the Erudites
Any mmo worth its salt should be like a good prostitute when it comes to its game world- One hell of a faker, and a damn good shaker!
Are you talking about the toon with the shoulder-shield? If so I agree, that character is no erudite. Forehead too small.
I wouldn't base this painting as the races available. There are far too many races missing. So, I hope SoE wouldn't launch with only those available.
She looks like a man. So this is a few years before her gender change surgery I think.
Yeah, if this painting were showing the playable races, there'd be alot of angry fans. It would basically mean they cut out almost all of the popular races from the franchise. I don't get the impression the artist had much connection with EQ at all, considering the details of the painting.
Personal note: I'd better get to play a troll or I'm going to mess them up
There is no timeline for EQ next it will not follow any events that happen in EQ or EQ2.
It will be a Parallel universe the same world, most of the same NPCs even, but different events happen.
One can assume it will start at the same time EQ did or maybe before EQ did. I would guess it would start around the same time EQ used. Although starting earlier would have its advantages.
LOL
Well, the way she looks definitely reinforces that it is a re-imagining; an alternate Norrath.
I hope this also means that Luclin is intact. One of the first things I'm going to do when I log in is look up into the sky.
No plate at all? Not sure if I like...
Although that leaked video back from 2010 definitely showed a human male in full plate armor - I suppose they could have changed since then.
It would be surprising to me to see Luclin added since that would be a huge amount of content to re-imagine. Re-imagining the full game with a fully redone Antonica, Odus, Kunark, Faydwer, Velious, and Luclin might be to much to get in at release. My thoughts are they will just have Antonica, Odus, and Faydwer with future expansions available later via extra $$ in the cash shop.
LOL I agree. I like some of the models in the art, but my gosh is Firiona an eye sore.
You have to remember that each race and class adds an exponential amount of development time. Especially if they end up having a lot of armor diversity and high amounts of character customization. I also believe in another post I mentioned that if you took all the classes from EQ and EQ2, that it comes up to something like 20 races. That's an insane amount of races
Then look at the EQ1 classes. Beserker, Shadowknight, Paladin, Warrior, Monk, Rogue, Ranger, Wizard, Enchanter, Necro, Magician, Druid, Shaman, Cleric, Beastlord, Bard.
FFS that's a ton of classes, especially if they really put a lot of effort into each one, giving them unique game play mechanics (Think of Vanguard, where almost all the classes and attacks and spells, but also had alternate mechanics, such as dreadknights building up dread, or Paladin's gaining virtue for heroic acts, or Bards able to customize and edit their own songs, monks and disciples having Endurance AND Jin combat points, etc etc).
Point is, if you think they're going to fit in 20 races and 16 classes all in at release, you're probably going to be a sad panda on August 2nd. I have no doubt that the team has managed to capture a majority of the classes and races for EQN, but I wouldn't count on every single one of them to be in game at launch.
Legends of Kesmai, UO, EQ, AO, DAoC, AC, SB, RO, SWG, EVE, EQ2, CoH, GW, VG:SOH, WAR, Aion, DF, CO, MO, DN, Tera, SWTOR, RO2, DP, GW2, PS2, BnS, NW, FF:XIV, ESO, EQ:NL
Sometime before the 2nd model was scrapped Smed said the game would have as many classes as EQ but not as many as EQ2. Now this could mean nothing as they scrapped that version of the game, but they could very well of stayed with the number of classes.
I'm halfway hoping that SOE have pushed Norrath into a Steampunk (or should that be Steamgnome) era. I don't know that there really is a need for another high fantasy version of Norrath. Maybe even a WWI incarnation -- can you trust your ogre allies to be able to distinguish between a trench and a latrine, especially under stressful combat conditions? Something in the far distant future would be interesting, too. Imagine being able to crash meteors into the gnome home world!
But, I'm expecting another high fantasy romp.
Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.
My hearing might be bad but in that video, I could have sworn that right after the woman complaining I heard him say "EQN will have less classes...............".
It was hard to hear though
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hyHMejR3pJM
15:55 he says "And there will be less classes ..... shgjhfsdjkghfjkg" can't make out the end of it.
Less classes than EQ2 but same as EQ1? Less classes in general?
Is this what you were talking about?
Legends of Kesmai, UO, EQ, AO, DAoC, AC, SB, RO, SWG, EVE, EQ2, CoH, GW, VG:SOH, WAR, Aion, DF, CO, MO, DN, Tera, SWTOR, RO2, DP, GW2, PS2, BnS, NW, FF:XIV, ESO, EQ:NL
Smed just says that the number of classes will be closer to the original Everquest.
Legends of Kesmai, UO, EQ, AO, DAoC, AC, SB, RO, SWG, EVE, EQ2, CoH, GW, VG:SOH, WAR, Aion, DF, CO, MO, DN, Tera, SWTOR, RO2, DP, GW2, PS2, BnS, NW, FF:XIV, ESO, EQ:NL
Hard to say. But at least they realized that they screwed up the classes in EQ2.
