So what can I do in DDO? Say the wife goes to her friends, kids are in bed, and I just let the dog out to piss. I crack open a beer and sit down and load up DDO. My buddies are logging on at 8:30, but it's only 7:00. Can I log on and do anything? Can I solo some mobs for cashweaponsxp? I know I can't work on trade skills and I don't want to get into another group because I'll miss questing with my buddies. Can someone please inform?

Go watch a movie. Perhaps a comedy. They usually last about 90 minutes.
Watch TV.
Play some online poker.
Do some chores.
No one said you had to play DDO for that 90 minutes. Its not rocket science.

short answer is no
Almost everyone who's playing needs a group, so you click on LFG and you'll be in one within 5 - 15 minutes, even without actually looking or trying to join a group that's advertising. Some classes may be seen as more 'crucial' to a group than others (clerics, rogues), but don't jump to the conclusion that they're much more likely to get an invite, especially as they will be popular picks to play for various reasons and their relatively high populations will offset their usefulness. So anyway, once in a group, the majority of the missions could be completed in less than an hour, so you could achieve something in that time. When your buddies log-in, just say thx for the group k bye, and go play with your buddies.
There will be some missions you can solo, especially if you are repeating ones that are a level or two beneath your character's level. It is as yet unknown if there will continue to be missions you can solo as levels climb, it is almost universal in mmorpgs that you must eventually group to advance, but it is unknown what happens in DDO as almost nobody's gotten to play it more than a few days.
why not go into another group, most simple missions take an hour at most to do so you should be able to get at least one done before your friends show up, hell do what I'm planning on doing, go back to one of the ones you've already solo'd on normal and give it a try on hard. You should still get a little xp for it and will most definitely get more loot from it. Also you could go to one of the danger zones and do some missions in that area. There will be options of things for you to do.
You can form a quick one shot party using their system and tackle a short or medium duration mission.
Lol this is really funny as people answering this dont have ever read dev diaryes, but in short you can do quite a lot of things, you can go to explore some raid zone and start doing some small quests there, that will give you some exp and probably you will be able to do some combat practice too, or you can try to sneak by to get a loot, or you can simply go in some lower lv mission zone and try to find all its secrets that you missed before.
DDO play card on sheer quantity of missions it offer to make you all time entertained, so that you will be able to start a mission that can have duration of 10 min - 30 min or one hour without problems. Probably at lv 3 you already can try to do lv 1 missions alone and that will be real chalange to overcome with limited resources you have in game. If they are too easy you can get a harder settings on them and better loot too
if your mates wont sign on for 90 mins you can run a few lower level missions with a group, or your absloute best bet would be to start your own group and just leave slots for your buddies when they get on just invite them and instant group. thats what i would do at least. from what i understand the missions are easy to duo (cleric fighter) but hard to solo.

This really is not WoW/EQ where Gear makes the man. Here in eVE, the man with biggest balls, willing to risk the most, will win. It is risk/reward here- not always wear best items 24/7 and beat the crap out of all else.

DDO is the game where i hope you ll have few things to do when your friends are not online (unless you want to do this quest with other people).
Then you just have to do other things , like read books, watch tv, and so on.
I don't want a game where the objectif is to keep you connected as much as possible. I m ok to pay 13$ a month, if i can enjoy the game 15 hours a week. I m not ok if the game is artificially addictive with concepts like grinding or farming to highten your reputation with the red kobolds and so on...
I have a life, and i want to be able to both live my life and enjoy all what is possible in DDO
I agree to me the whole concept of D&D is questing with your friends in a regular party. I don't think the common grind and repeat principles of MMORPG will apply. At least I hope not, this should hopefully lead to smaller but more tightly integrated groups.
1. Get into the tavern and have a random chat with the other customers.
2. Clean your inventory
3. Do an easy dungeon by yourself
