Question about WorldPasses

I just picked up FFXI yesterday. I've been playing FF for years and finally decided to give MMO a try. A friend of mine was going to join me -- he's an MMO veteran back to UO, so he's the one who got me into it. Anyway, I got it set up on my computer and created a character, and was randomly assigned to Alexander. Then I find out I need a WorldPass to get my friend on the same server... and they're like 1000 gil. What exactly am I supposed to do? Why would they make it so difficult for 2 friends to start together? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance! image

The basic idea is to control the populations so that the servers stay fairly balanced. And by and large, it's worked; unlike other games where some servers are overloaded and some are deserted, the 32 worlds of FFXI are more or less balanced. There are some somewhat larger and some somewhat smaller, but no extremes. My advice to you is to earn the 1000 gil; it's not as hard as it sounds, really. Remember to keep signet up so that you get crystal drops and sell your loot on the Auction House, not to the vendor NPCs.

If you're in Bastok, kill the Huge Hornets. Wind crystals are 300-400 gil a piece, honey's about the same. If you get a beehive chip, that's bingo; one chip'll buy a Worldpass all by its lonesome.

Windurst, kill the Bumblebees, which work the same as the Hornets.

San d'Oria's the tough one, no easy profitable bugs to kill. Kill the Wild Rabbits; Earth Crystals are only about 100 gil apiece, but hare meat will bring about 200-300 gil a piece, and the hides should bring 300-400. Working in your favor is a better drop rate; you should pile up hides fairly quickly if you keep at it.
