can I get a good feel for the game in 2 hours?

SendenSenden Member UncommonPosts: 602

I got invited into the beta like a month ago however due to some pretty crazy times at work lately, I've never had the chance to play the game over the weekends.  Anyhow, I've got about 2-3 hours free later that I am tempted to use to finally give FF14 a try but was wondering if it was worth it or would I be better off waiting for the next beta phase?  I've heard a fair few people complain the combat is boring and some have countered with that's just early on.. seeing how almost every theme park is combat orientated, I think I'd be put off if the combat bored me in my initial play through.

Two hours of personal experience are still better than no experience at all.

Actually you cant, because the game starts of very very slow oldfashioned pace, but ik keeps picking up and picking up on the road to max level and beyound.

you can however get a good feel of the graphics and annimations in those 2 hours.

For the first hour I was not even near a mob to get the feel of the combat. I was trying to find where everything was and getting quests and mind you a lot questing in the game is dependent on a previous one. You must complete one to get the next its a quest chain I think they call it. Sincerely two hours may help you like others said on graphics and animations and the general atmosphere of the town you start in.

Two hours is nothing, there is no way u would be able to try out the jobs available to see which u like most, try combat, do a FATE or two... the list goes on ^^ but as others said

Two hours is better then none :P

    Two hours eh?

You might be able to get through the opening cut scene, then the loading screen and your 2 hours will be up.

Lol jokes aside everyone is right, the game doesnt plop you in the middle of a field with mobs running around.

If you read the quest you most likely will gain 3-4 Levels before even leaving town and fighting a single mob in 2 hours.

2 hours isnt much time to check it out and learn much about the game, but if you like there is also an NPC that allows you to level to 29 for the beta to check out some of the later stuff. Though that means youll also be missing out on all the stuff leading up to that point.

Id suggest at least get in s much as you can in that 2 hours, then if you get a chance either before this beta phase ends in a few days, or during the next phase, and feel comfortable with the basics to use that ability to level up quickly to see some more content.

The first 2-3 hours are actually pretty much all straight forward tutorial.

You can probably get to level 6-7 in that time, but the game doesn't really open up till closer to 10 and certainly 10+

For how it drives yes... how it plays no. This game has so much depth in the class, job system you wont even start to taste what makes this game great.

i personally found the game gets better as you go, once you get into the dungeons and crafting, leves, 2nd class etc.

had i judged it on what i was doing the first hour i would have uninstalled immediately.

I think after 2 hrs into game, I watch about 1hr worth of boring cutscenes, and delivered 5 letters to guys standing 10 feet apart.

after 5-6 hours, I realized the game is pretty much everything I have seen before

Yeah this. I think I've tried damn nearly every mmo worth trying. FF14 AAR had me on the fence for the first two hours, but by hour 5 or 6 I knew I wasn't going to be logging back in. The visuals look pretty, but I'm tired of the handrails.

I dont think its possible to get a feel for this game in 2-3hrs. The reasons why are below:

    - when you start out, about the first 1-2hrs is spent running around your starting city, learning how things work, doing fedex quests, etc

    - Once you get out into the areas surrounding your starting city you get to do combat, but only against low level mobs and whilst representative of the "style" of combat, combat at higher levels is a different prospect, see below

    - One of the more innovative things about ARR is that you can learn and use skills from all the 'classes' meaning you can have for instance a protective buff from sorcerer class, ranged magic from thaumaturge and close quarters combat from pugilist all on the same character. Being able to learn other classes isnt unlocked until level 15, and then you have to level those classes to get their skills....this takes time

    - ARR continuously unlocks new game mechanics and systems as you level, all the way to max. Playing just a few hours you wont get to experience most of them

    - Group content is very enjoyable, especially the way different classes interact.

Game is not my cup of tea, but I gave it about 8hrs of play to decide that..... its all been done before. Unless you are a FF fan, and I'm not, there is no hook.

sure its not part of the next gen combat show (personally i think that GW2 combat is the best that could happen to MMOs)

But you guys probably missed the essence of the combat... its still there, positioning, evading (getting out of combat range)  , making choices.  Sure its a bit slower then most action paced games, but its still there.
