What would keep you playing long term?

I would say an amazing community and a nice guild where people treat each other nicely. I would say monthly updates, new an interesting dungeons, a lot of dynamic events (public quests), a thriving community, a lot of boxed sales, Square Enix caring about the game and with planned expansions. Fun and engaging endgame.

Do you remember Dynamis? Do you remember the expansions like Wings of the Goddess? That's what FFXIV needs to keep me interested long term.

Huh? What do "boxed sales" have to do with what keeps you playing? If you'd said "a feeling of pleasantly dense population on my server", that I could understand, though box sales don't necessarily translate into that.

The only thing that can ultimately keep me interested in any MMO longterm is good people, be they guildies or real life friends. Of course, it helps considerably if there is always novel content or interesting things to do for us to share...

The only thing that keeps me playing an MMO longterm is my friends/guild. Without that, I lose interest within a month or two.

Given YoshiP's current direction and the amount of money Square has already dumped into making this successful, I can only imagine they're not going to drop it like a hot rock in 6 months and provide no expansions. I mean come on. YoshiP already mentioned plans for the Crystal Tower or similar and a lot of other stuff (Magitek, etc).

Community is key. No community will make this a short-lived game for me. But I plan on getting into or starting a good LS/FC. Even 1.0 had decent-ish community.

Also not being able to get through the content in a week, or even a month. Difficulty needs to be there, because this gives things for the community to do. I remember the difficulty of FFXI fondly, but only because it was like "hey let's go camp some-NM" or "let's go grind X so I can get my Y", or even "I'm going to wander up to the local fishing hole and shoot the breeze with the 5 other people there".

Difficulty alone isn't what made XI fun ... it was the community working together to overcome it. But it had to be there. If XIV devolves into groups spamming skills in FATEs, it's not going to be the same.

I agree with the OP - community is what ultimately keeps me in a MMO for the long haul.

Mechanics get me started, content gets me to the top level, but it's community that keeps me hanging around after the rides are all done.

It already lost me, I played for a few weeks everyday.  I won't be buying this title its not my style, I am not a fan of the lore or the world.... I'll be playing Cube World until ESO/The Repopulation/GTA5/The Division comes along.

Friends/guild, new content, new jobs/classes, housing system.

Honestly I will spend countless hours getting gear sets and decorations etc. for my house.

Yes, good community is the most important requirement  for me to stay long term.

That said, I also enjoy that feeling of accomplishment after earning things.  I need to feel like there are things in the game i simply am not good enough or powerful enough or even wise enough to achieve for a very long time, and when I do (if I do), i need those kinds of things to 'matter' - things that will last and that i can tell stories about.

For example, just doing the Genkei missions in FFXI to unlock the level caps was a big deal for some of us.   A lot of us.

Getting higher level people to escort you through dangerous areas to help with job unlocks and dungeon keys and such.   Acquiring Artifact Armor sets was a legendary experience for each class in their own way.     The game wasn't about running a dungeon to fight the boss at the end that drops fat loot.    It was a grand adventure that thousands shared together.  Every zone was a new chapter to tell of a fantastic story.  Not told by the NPCs, or the dev team, but crafted by the community of players.

a good rp community. speaking of which, is there a predetermined server for dedicated roleplayers?

As it stands, I like what they have designed. Class/Job system looks awesome, wife loves housing so that will keep her happy. Cant wait to try their crafting system. What will nail it for me is the group content. If its like GW2 where you run like a chicken with your head cut off from boss to boss without playing as a team. I will drop this game in a heartbeat. If its designed to group fun where you need to work together and I am not excluded from most of the content because I dont have top end best of the best gear. Then I will be happy to stay. With how crafting is shaping up I think I will be happy!!!

Oh yes, because every game with a free to play option needs a cash shop!

Think for a second, and I'm pretty sure you can come up with a good way for them to implement a subscriptionless option without resorting to implementing a cash shop, or at least implement a harmless one.

Community is key! While the beta community was not as great as XI it wasn't nearly as bad as some other games I've played. FFXIV has already got that going from them.  Let's hope we can keep it alive.

New content is nice but Yoshi-P is already discussing some future ideas. I think this will definitely happen but there is enough in the game right now to keep me occupied.  I'm not a content burner though as I enjoy the journey a bit so I tend to take my time.

My friends keep me coming back though.  More than anything. I've already made some great new friends in beta so I can't wait to see what happens in release!

Friends, guilds, and the proverbial carrot-on-a-stick...

Those are what kept me playing the same character in EQ for 7 years.

New content released frequently? This is rather obvious....

P2P will keep that train moving, so long live P2P.

If they go the GW2 route of B2P and then a cash shop that is vanity items only then fine.  If they go anything like the other F2P games I've seen....please stay subscription.

No subscription.  At least that way they have the chance of getting my money in the cash shop.  With subscription, they have no chance of getting my money.  Or at least go B2P.

Challenging content, even if it seems impossible to succeed. Along with what is said here.

From what I can see so far, I have game for a long time. Im not a fast leveler and I do LOVE crafting. Theres lots of fun in the game. If they keep adding and building on what they have now. Ill be one happy camper.

And, YES to subs. Cash shops suck in almost EVERY game. The one exception I can think of is GW2's Cash Shop.

  • svannsvann Member RarePosts: 2,230

Good community plus enough new content so it doesnt get stale.

edit: all bets are off though if something better comes.

Hard pve content that I would have to do with my guild.

A lifetime subscription option would sell me for life.

Any graphical, audio, or gameplay restrictions not seen in other mmos but found in FFXIV can be blamed on one thing.

A good LS with friends, expansions and content updates, a lot of group content both small and raid size, and overall difficulty even for solo play should be challenging enough for me to fail at least once or twice kind of like the fist solo boss fights which can be difficult if your not prepared.

community, community and friends. if anything has kept me in wow for so long it has been the guild i used to be in and the friends i hung out with. it is what makes any game great. My best time in eve online, dispite it having a community that can backstab you if the price is right, being with the right people made me had a blast when I played it. I enjoyed eves pvp dispite me not being much of a pvp player because of the people I was with.

Now that my guild in wow has desolved and  many friends have left, i rarely even log on, there is no point and wow does not offer much to push me to check up and make new friends due to the community that it has. It gives me little to no reason to help someone nearby who might need my help , but instead makes me wish they die so i can have a take on what they are probably fighting for stuff.

I did love the time I played ff11 which was my 1st mmo. and it was fun to try and help those passerbys. I got the same feeling here in ff14, going about  and taking that turn to help out someone who is struggling.  watch them turn tail to run, get a few heals in and watch them go back and finish their kill.   I would sometimes hang around fate bosses just to hear the music and occasionally would get a pm asking what classes I have unlocked to see if we can take said boss down. Did not happen all the time but it would

The courtesy of the players when even not in a group and helping out makes this community much better. I had played other mmos where i would help out someone and everyone would just walk away. this game actually pushes you to roleplay even if for a bit.

I tried phase 3 with some friends, showed some others who play wow with me, the game and i already got a group going together, friends from skype who are from accross the world, where wow has severed us due to region locks and forcing us to buy another copy of the game to play on other servers. we finally found a game we can all enjoy regardless where we are from. I cannot wait for the game to go live.

Hated 1.0, didnt give it a chance, tried it, disliked it and walked away didnt give square a dime. They redeemed themselves to me and it was worth paying for the game. curse the music why does it have to be so good.

And yeah Lalafells, must be one, and avoid getting punted.
