I was reading a chat log from last night where some warhammer fans asked mark jacobs some questions. here's one of them:
Mista_IBN: what else is Mythic doing? I haven't been keepin up, dropped that Roman one, right?
MBJ: Yeap, Imperator has been postponed, it's a shame, I loved that idea. We may still do it but not now. Other than DAoC, the only other thing we are currently working on is WAR.
So thats sort of good news for anyone who was looking forward to that game. It hasn't been totally scrapped yet. 
Garthilk: Speaking of other projects Mark, Imperator. You were quoted as saying Imperator was simply not meeting that triple-A games standard. I know this is a tough question, but being a die hard Imperator fan, what couldn't you do to Imperator to make it AAA quality, that you think you'll have the ability to later?
MBJ: That was easily the hardest decision I had to make. I was a die hard IO fan as well. As to what can we do later, well, we have learned a lot about how to make games through IO's failure (to date). It forced us to take a long hard look at how we had to do things today (as opposed to the old days) and to make changes where necessary. If we hadn't made the mistakes we made with IO, I'm not sure that we could have made as great a game out of WH as I beliebe we will be able to. So, I'm hoping that once we are done with WAR, we will be able to put the same resources into IO and make it really great. IO, as it was, would have been okay but I don't think it would have ended up great. Given the investment needed these days to make a MMORPG, good doesn't cut it

what is this "WAR" they are talking about..? Warhammer?

yeah. mythic got the rights to do a warhammer MMORPG. It's slated for release in 2007. It's going to be another RvR based game. However, mythic assured us not to worry. it's not going to be WoW 1.5 or DAoC 2... its going to be a new game. Not totally revolutionary (because nothing really is) but it will have some cool features they're not disclosing yet.

Real shame that IMPERATOR was cancelled... it seemed like a different game, and one that didn't have no stinking elves and orcs! I like a good fantasy game as well as the next but really we need a DECENT sci-fi genre game that's not 3 years old!
EVE is nice but I want something new!
The only other serious choice is AO and it's so dated it's really pitifull ( Though I applaud it's idea of in-game advertising!

I guess WAR will fill the sci-fi slot but ... 2007! and it's still got those pointy eared elves right?

Mythic are planning on turning the Imperator concept into a film screenplay and are hawking it around Hollywood at the moment to raise funding.
