Long time LOTRO player (lifer), disheartened at the recent direction Turbine has taken the LOTRO product and believe it is downhill from here ... looking to finally drop LOTRO and fill that gap with another MMORPG, the question is - which one ? I find Rift too bland. Not even going near WoW. I play GW2, but I don't really get serious with it, its merely a time-waster. Have played The Secret World on and off for the past few months, but have hit a wall at a certain point in the game with degree in difficulty of the missions. Not to mention the fact that there is hidden costs (membership, DLC, etc. etc.) with Funcom that I am not a big fan of. If I could pay a lump-sum sub fee for SWTOR I would sign up in a minute, but as it stands I find them too pricey. Other than that, I'm struggling to find a comparable game to LOTRO ... ... is EVE Online a possibility ?
Thanks for any light anyone can shed on this ...

WoW's visual aesthetics are way too over the top for me. Not to mention the fact that I do believe I would be paying for each separate expansion pack that Blizzard has put out for the game, correct ?
I was told that EVE is PVP-focused ... is this true ?

Isn't Darkfall solely PVP-based ?
I've played 2 days so far and 0 PvP I'm just grinding first dungeon in a city and crafting since you can make everything in this game. I noticed there arent any quests at all no storyline no rails at all but there is clan owned cities and auction.
I find it very fun and 0 stressfull for some reason the themepark go here kill these come back stressed me more then anything, cause it's all you did over and over.
edit: as I am writing this I'm ingame choping a tree getting timber

Well, I am glad that you find that a lot of fun. I for one could not find a PVP-based MMO a lot of fun. I enjoy the PVE content too much.
FFXI was the best PvE mmorpg I ever played and did it for 10 years I still play it from time to time. The new SE title FFXIV ARR is around the corner I recommend it as I played it for 2 years version 1.0 and its awesome.

you might try Rift, which actually has a much better cash shop than most i think. Faeblight is the RP server and while there's little rp to be had in public i would say it is the most LotRO of the servers as far as community goes.
you could try FFXIV, sub based, lots of in depth lore, reboot about to occur so you would be in at the ground level on a fresh server if you wanted.

I gave EVE a try, and like you said, I hated it very quickly ... :-/ just not my cup of tea ...
I am enjoying Rift right now. I know you said you think it is bland. I felt like the game takes time before you can really get into it. Try playing to level 25+ and re-evaluate the game. Their F2P model is probably the least-restrictive of all MMOs, so there is no monetary investment if you just want to evaluate the game to 25 or even 60. They also have a ton of PvE content which is very easy to access.
If you would like help getting started in Rift, PM me and I can help direct you to some builds or classes you might like. The soul system is somewhat complex at first, but can be very rewarding when you find a build you enjoy.
Rift, LOTRO, and WoW are currently the top three PvE games, as far as depth and scope of content goes. TSW has less content, but it is still very high quality. I can't think of any other games which might have the quality or scope of PvE content to satisfy the carebear within me.
I actually DL'd and gave the F2P a go with Rift and was struck at how visually bland the background landscape, etc. was in Rift. I was somewhat shocked, actually. I wasn't expecting it at all. There doesn't seem to be much in the way of lore as well in Rift. This also bothers me. But then again, I am fussy in this way and I may have to push this idiosyncrasy I have picked up, aside for now. I'm wondering if waiting for Everquest Next is an option ?
Are you looking for a game to play right now, or a game to play in December? The games that are out now have been suggested in this thread. If you don't like your choices, play an offline game until something else comes out.
Nobody in the general public has seen EQ:N, so chances are it isn't even close to being ready for release. SOE is good at generating hype, but they are even better at disappointing customers. I would be surprised if it is truly ready for release before the end of this year. I would not be surprised if they release something in November that resembles a beta, but they charge for it because they think they can get away with it due to their EQ fanbase.
LotRO is a somewhat unique game. However, it sounds like you enjoyed the standard themepark PvE dungeon running from it the most. As such you have a few options to try, but most of them aren't new.
GW2 has some pretty good dungeon content, but you're already playing that, and if you are looking for a traditional trinity game, you'll most likely hate the combat dynamics.
Everquest 2 & Vanguard are also ones you may want to try. They're fairly old now, and have some dated graphics, but they're pretty good classic PvE games.
FFXI is almost dead, unfortunately, but there is FFXIV coming out soon. It has really good graphics for an MMO and is also very PvE focused.
Neverwinter is free to try, and can be fun for a time, but I don't know if it'll hold your attention as a longterm MMO. Most of the people still playing are either extremely casual, or RPers.
You can also try some of the more asian games with PvE: TERA, Aion, but they may not be your cup of tea.
Other than those, there is Archeage, TSO, and WildStar coming out in the near-ish future to wait for. Though, if graphics is a thing for you, WildStar might also be too over the top, as it's fairly cartoony and has a much less serious emphasis to it's story elements.
