Yes a huge chunk of new developers for all three titles all at the same time screams a huge undertaking like making all three games co-exist somehow even if its simply a few zones.
Again there have been hints about something like this for some time as summed in those posts I linked. I have to say I think there will be integration somehow. To what degree, who knows. But I imagine that we will somehow be interacting with one another. If anything look to the fact that back in I think February and March, they went on a hiring spree for all three parts of this franchise.
If you watch the video from E3, they call it a franchise now and I am pretty sure specifically mention the word integration among the three games.
Would be cool if they upgraded all 3 to the same game engine and updated the textures and graphics but kept the game play the same. Maybe make the UI have modern functionality but still have the option to use the classic UI and features. Just an overhaul to match the look of modern MMOs.

I would probably quit my day job if that was true...

If they did I would be going back to my EQ1 chars in a heartbeat. Tried to get my wife in EQ1 but after playing WoW she found it to much to play. UI was 90% of the reason why she hated it lol
Would seem to be a lot of work for very little pay off. I guess you could have a portal in EQN that zones you into EQ or EQ2 but why bother? You can install both games in short order for free I may add.
Reading back through my old posts, they mentioned timing the GU release of all three games. Why would they do that?
Some EQ and EQ2 players also mentioned that to the the Age's End Prophecy appeared to be linking the games somehow in the end as the it involved the EQ2 players going back in time. Then add in chrono portals. And further add that it has been said on twitter that all Norraths connect in the Ethernere.
It certainly is possible.

UPdate all core mechanics to to be mirrors of each other (UI and what not)
EQN allows one to port into any timeline/plane of EQ1/EQ2... gear and items travel with you

Nope. Won't happen. What they mean by viewing the games as a single franchise is as in: Everquest is a franchise. Everquest 2 is a franchise. Everquest Next is a franchise.
It may be reading to far into it but watch that video. They specifically mention the possibility of integrating gameplay between eq and eq2 and with that EQNext.

EvE has done this with their ship models. Sometimes they update the current model, and other times they have completely changed the model; but in both circumstances they create a more visually pleasing game. I don't know why they couldn't just slowly update the character models in EQ1 and then work on the structures. But a merger of all 3 games......nope I don't that's the "new" they talk about.
We are jumping from the word intergration to merged. Thats like taking the leap from associate to partner.
I agree my phrasing was a little more extreme than I intended. Thank you for pointing that out. I intended to communicate my thoughts as "are we going to have some form of merged/integrated play" I did not intend to suggest Sony closing the doors on EQ or EQ2.
For those who have said its impossible to do you are very mistaken. Everything associated with your character, your gear, your skills, your talents/aa is represented with numbers. To put it in simple terms to copy/paste these numbers into a new game with a different engine is far from impossible, but again I did not mean to suggest closing shop on the old games I simply meant to suggest active game play with players from different EQ games.
Wouldn't that require that every race/class from the previous games have to be included in EQNext? Unless they have some sort of ancestry system where you revert to a race that was evolved from to form whatever you played in the first two games - assuming that EQN is set in the past.
EQ1 and EQ2s lore will start to get closer and effect each other. Also remember they're not the same timeline. EQ1 never had the moon explode because the gods reversed the timeline during POTime. EQ2 is what happen if they never did that.
EQ1 and EQ2 have the lore written for the next 3-4 expansions already so you can expect the lore to cross paths one way or another.

I think the highlighted part will become the important thing to bear in mind.
I can see EQ/EQII/EQN having a "shared area" as in each game will see aspects of the others through the conduits of Ethernere, perhaps even certain events/expansions will make more use of this area as a way to generate events or stories which affect all 3 "parallel-universe" Norraths.
Perhaps even an overarching event/story where all 3 games' players must coordinate their efforts to successfully defeat a severe threat to Norrath, in a "be the Avengers" type plot-line. Perhaps even some cross-game & cross-server group content/raids.
It might just be a 1-off "launch-event" to coincide with EQN's launch that has repercussions for all 3 games.
I agree. I have never thought or said it would be a merger but I do think there is a very good chance they will interact on some level. There are numerous hints and clues to this. From a purely business standpoint it would make no sense to combine the three.

Can't believe this thread is even still going in light of the fact that Georgeson and/or Smedly said EQ Next won't even affect EQ1/EQ2 because it will be a different kind of game.
I have a Station account. I have Station All Access Pass, actually. I have EQ and EQ2 characters that are both linked via this account. The point, these games are already linked and in a week yet another will be added.
The Plane of Time has cracked, at what point who knows but it has created different versions of the same universe, the universe of Everquest.
My level 65 Warrior may encounter this crack in the Plane of Time via a portal that has been discovered.
Also discovered, in another time, in another universe of the same is a portal within EverQuest 2 that my 85 Guardian may embark to adventure about.
Working together through the powers of a now distraught Firiona Vie, where one of her universes is shattered with the death of one Firiona and the unleashing of the Chains of Eternity, the disturbance has caused as stir within both universes revealing to a still alive Firiona Vie in another universe the crack in the Plane of Time. With this knowledge a resolution to unite the Planes of Time once again into the wondrous singular universe it once was has been undertaken by both universes. This singular universe is known as the Next Universe.
Once both universes defeat the dastardly foes guarding the portal linking both universes of Everquest, then and only then can the Next Universe be united and explored.
This new era will see the lore and characters of both universes united into one, the stories now the same for the first time.
If you are an adventurer in the first universe, Everquest, then you can delight in the adventures of the Next Universe in your preferred environment, continuing your adventures past the 100th season.
The same holds true for those originating from the second universe, EverQuest 2.
Should you be so lucky as to have an origin in the Next Universe then you can start anew with the boon of your family name, your Legacy.
Now with each universe one in the same, the story unfolds unfettered and the bonds of kinship are unbroken. In one universe achievements of your heirs' Legacy will embolden the adventurers of another within the same Legacy.
Will you start anew with heirlooms passed down from generation to generation and provide experience gains much needed in this bold new universe or will you continue your adventures in order to propel the Next Universe forward into a new era of unity and power?

I think they mean Story wise The up coming EXp for EQ1 and EQ2 will be close together (EQ1 as been following a Story about a dead god).
Eq2 as been following a story of the Awaken
Some how EQ1 and 2 will be telling the same story maybe in different ways or very close together but you still be playing EQ1 or EQ2.
What worries me is How they are having this new EQ2 thing at SOE live that they want tested real badly.
The stat and gear overhaul is a big enough change. What more could they possibly be doing to EQ2 all at once?
Lets just pray it isn't NGE-2.0
I asked Omeedd about this on reddit.. his reply?
