To all the mindless idiots saying this is a bad thing or that SoE are just ripping everyone off, consider:
a) For their 60% share they have garnered an audience, created the marketplace for your item, put in place a vetting process to keep out the shiny pink vibrator armor and carried out the last 20% of the work in touching up.
b) By making player studio they have effectively given up one of their biggest income streams for the game to the players. Remember, these are F2P games that rely on cosmetic sales to keep going. The development cost for the wonderful new continent or dungeon they don't charge for has to come from somewhere.
c) Cosmetic items in PS2 sell for $5 - $10. If you create one popular item that sells 10,000 times for $5, congratulations! Thats 40% of $50,000, albeit pre-tax etc.
How the hell is that worse than sticking your mods up and pleading with the playerbase to donate a few cents???
Now, I'm usually pretty critical of $OE, especially when it comes to treatment of their customers, but this is an idea that I'm surprised hasn't gone mainstream sooner, and even more surprised that $OE is taking the lead on it. Kudos to them for giving people with the talent to make items for their games the opportunity to make some money off that skill, while increasing player individuality.
I think the 60-40 split is a bit much, 70-30 would have been fine, but hey, it's $OE we're talking about here. What else would you expect? I mean let's be honest here, this is a way for $OE to make money while using very little resources. Nonetheless, if you're a graphic designer that's out of work, or just needs some extra cash on the side, here's an opportunity.
Again, hats off to $OE for bringing this idea to the forefront. It stuns me a little to be stating this, but hopefully other companies that I will actually do business with take a cue from $OE here, because it is a good idea.
I really don't understand the hate, it's a win for all parties involved.
Players - Players that enjoy cosmetic items will get an increased rate of release and more varied options. Players that don't use cosmetic items are not affected in anyway.
Modders - Say a modder makes a helmet in PS2 that sells for $5(500 SC), they are making $2 dollars off of every unit sold. It's not a huge amount but it is more than the thumbs up or positive comment they would get normally. Additionally their creation gets exposure to a much wider audience than if they just posted it on some mod site.
Developers - Basically just free money for them but it also allows them to allocate more art resources to new content rather than wasting time on cosmetic items.
It is a win. SoE haters and F2P haters gonna hate is all that is going on here.
Giving modder a chance to add to the game is awesome and letting them make a few bucks is even better. How many games even do that? Sure it's not 100% but it shouldn't be. The profit from the mod is coming from the value of the game not exclusively because of a good mod. They still are doing the work of looking through all submission and making sure they aren't full of holes.

Thanks for completely dismissing the many problems I have pointed out, makes you look like the voice of reason!

That is not really the main issue though. Single player titles have always been moddable, with many studio's fostering that because they know it adds a great deal of value to their product. As soon as money enters into it though one of 2 things is going to happen, either the modder is going to get screwed over (as we already see happening in many respects) or developers are going to go bankrupt fighting court cases over ip copyright. There is no give in the system, and all sorts of leeway in the law. Modders cannot realistically win in this scenario.
I did battle with ignorance today, and ignorance won.
To exercise power costs effort and demands courage. That is why so many fail to assert rights to which they are perfectly entitled - because a right is a kind of power but they are too lazy or too cowardly to exercise it. The virtues which cloak these faults are called patience and forbearance.
Originally posted by tilleroder SOE is staging to be the Apple Store, or Google Play, of the MMO industry. This is a brilliant business move, and I can't believe no one did it sooner.

That's ok. It's not like PS2 modders are going to be ripping off mods from Skyrim.
I'll say it again. They are going to hand pick what is going to be added. If it doesn't fit within the PS universe or too closely resembles something from another game or that is already added they aren't going to approve it. You don't get to cry copyright infringement if someone submits a cool looking helmet that happens to look so similar to the one you sent 3 weeks later.
They have already done this in Eq2 as well.it is SOE's new gimmick to entice cash shop use ,something i don't like one bit.
They also tied cash shop into their other idea, dungeon maker, they just can't give the players anything, not even subscribed players, that si why i cancelled my two accounts,i will not be supporting SOE ever again as long as they have cash shop.
There seems to be only one decent developer left and that is Square Enix, still no cash shop and i appreciate it.
