At last week's San Diego Comicon, our own Genese Davis participated in a panel entitled "Video Gaming is Pop Culture". She's got a full wrap report today. See what you think and then continue the discussion in the comments.
Warren Davis described the development environment during the conception of Q*bert and how different the restrictions were then and therefore so was the developer’s thought process. He mentioned how developers constantly had to think about how to fit everything into a small amount of memory and how their nemesis always seemed to be 64-bit computing. Today, the video game industry resembles the film industry more and more where elements like story, character development and visual effects are common focuses.

We are all gamers, but in my neck of the woods there is a stigma attached to being a pc gamer. My friends will play consoles, my mother and all of her 50-70 year old friends will play candy crush and cards till they fall asleep, but mention you play mmorpgs with a computer, try to explain what it is to my friends and my mom, well you would think I have some kind of contagious disease and they want to get as far from me as possible.
free to play on console will take a lot longer. Parents are not going to put up with cash shops. They will simply just say no, it's good advice and advice we should all ad hear to. I love gaming but if and when I have kids and cash shops have taken over console play like they have pc play, my kids will not be playing video games.
Destiny I'm holding out on my ps4 pre order for your special edition ps4. If you decide to put microtransactions in your game, that's fine but I won't be buying your game or a ps4. I already own a cash shop machine it's called a pc, the only reason I prefered consoles in the past is because cash shops were non existent. Ad in the cash shops, and I wills just stick with the superior gaming rig known as PC. For the record even having microtransactions for fluff items makes it a cash shop in my book and should be in everyone else's as well.
Loved your video! So passionate and very true. Gaming is so widespread compared to the "old days" yet most of the negative stereotypes still exist.
I've known people who try to deny being a "gamer" because "oh I play War Games I play Call of Duty its not the same".
Playing: Smite, Marvel Heroes
Played: Nexus:Kingdom of the Winds, Everquest, DAoC, Everquest 2, WoW, Matrix Online, Vangaurd, SWG, DDO, EVE, Fallen Earth, LoTRo, CoX, Champions Online, WAR, Darkfall, Mortal Online, Guild Wars, Rift, Tera, Aion, AoC, Gods and Heroes, DCUO, FF14, TSW, SWTOR, GW2, Wildstar, ESO, ArcheAge
Waiting On: Nothing. Mmorpg's are dead.
Wow see nerd rage ^^^^^^ above .
Guessing these people got stuffed into some lockers. I kid, I kid.
I agree with your article.
I am not sure if its completely accepted though.
Gaming in one form or another is in every facet of our lives now. That much is true. I honestly believe that saying its "Pop culture" is a mistake. Think the article more should've been called "Gaming, Everybody does it. Everybody loves it."
Pop culture is so vague and a matter of opinion.
I am very curious as to how gaming will evolve and continue to integrate itself into technology and society. I am not sure if it will bring us together or create a generation of anti-social trolls whom only means of communication is texting. See forums for examples.
MMORPG Gamers/Developers need a reality check!
Lol I love video games and own multiple consoles/pc... I *still* don't know what Kojima is, and I've been a gamer for 22 years!!
*giggles*
There's always going to be differences between game genres and some are just niche markets. When I went out to ebgames to buy Everquest 1 expansions, I was always just so embarassed...
I've loved the consoles, but since mmos were on the pc, it did always feel like more of a social stigma to admit to strangers that yes, I did play Everquest... I don't consider angry birds and casual iphone candy crush saga users to really be "gamers". That is kind of like calling me a fan of reality show tv, just because I enjoy america's got talent and the voice... I'm still against reality shows, I merely like a tiny fraction of them...
Yes, we will have a generation of trolls unable to write more than 140 characters, because essays will give way to twitter posts in the near future. People who have long forgotten proper english grammar and spelling because they are so used to acronyms and limited characters online. The newly established ways of how to cram in the most meaning into the smallest sentence possible, will leave us all scratching our heads in confusion!!!
This is a great column! I really wish I could have been at the panel. It's so hard to get to Comic Con these days.
I think gaming is pop culture for sure. Look at the amount of gaming happening by everyone everywhere. I was eating dinner last night and a large family was sitting near me. The parents were talking and all the kids were talking about Minecraft and other games while playing on their little devices.
It's evident that games are already a part of normal culture and when those kids grow up to be the parents what a different world we'll be living in. Video games haven't been around that long in the overall span of time and it's fun to see how quickly it's injected itself in to our day to day.
Thank you for sharing Genese and always love reading your weekly topics! Keep them coming!
I would like to live where gaming is pop culture, in most parts of the world it isn't.
