I'm not going to rage because I'm not invested enough in it... but would need at least a PVP server to consider playing. Sticking around is a different story and depends on the gameplay. I'm also done with upgrading my PCs and am going to play on PS4 - so if they break with the trend and don't put EQN on consoles, I won't be able to play. But again, nothing that will burst any blood vessels.
So it looks like most of the people in this forum are in a similar boat - where they have deal breakers but not sanity breakers.
I'm thinking there are players out there though who will lose their cool over some issues. There were some pretty passionate posts on the official forums. I see things like the art style, approach to combat and UI being potential issues for traditionalists. And as you said, PVP is something people feel strongly about. I'm wondering, "forced" OWPvP used to be almost a standard back in the day. Was it really a problem back then? I'm not so sure. I don't think it classifies as a major deal breaker as it's circumstantial and can be mostly avoided if it really bothers you.
What people need is a kick the butt. Someone needs to make it right and show people that OWPvP can be extremely fun and interesting. IMO
Did you ever play Shadowbane? It had maybe the best character customization system I've ever seen, in any type of game. It had an open world that players could affect by building their own cities and fighting against each other.
But the game devolved into high levels preying on low levels, and griefers running in packs. A lot of people stopped playing due to the constant griefing, and then the griefers left because they had no one left to kill.
The kind of game you want doesn't work because people suck.

Poor ShadowBane. A system of punishment for such behavior is simple to implement while allowing open world pvp to flourish.
I don't want anyone to be griefed over and over but I do want good world pvp with meaningful territiory control in a sandbox environment..

People who are going to be crying rage-tears this Friday:
OW FFA PvPers and PvP gankers
Anyone who want EQ1.5 or EQ2.5 (there are a lots of them)
Anyone who has a rigid standard for a sandbox
People who are going to be happy:
player who just want something fun, new and different
Although, I expect lots of passionate debates on the features announced as well, but these might not be rage-tears induced.
what? Where are the lots of EQ 1.5s?....Theres no other game even close to what EQ1 was in its golden days.....All the copy cats went after WoW, not EQ.

I know right? Stupid Blizzard. Why didn't they copy some sandbox game so that MMO's wouldn't be popular and the giants would brag about their 250K subscriptions instead of 12 million at it's peak. Dammit to Hell!!

I think its going to take a few dozen bad sandbox games to fail to stop this stigma that themepark = bad game. The problem is bad games, not that its sandbox or themepark.
I don't see how they can avoid some sort of backlash based on everything that Smedley has promised or simply said, "Yes" to. Even if they had four different mega servers, each with a different rule set so that everything Smedley said was true, there would be people who would be angry that it isn't one big server, and people who would be angry that it wasn't a bunch of small servers or a bunch of personal servers. Personal servers is something he gave a generic, blanket, "Yes" to btw.

Then you will like SoE F2P model they use on all their games and I am sure they will use on EQN. Its really a long demo. You get to play to top level and not pay anything. The restrictions or bonuses depending how you look at it. In the end will make you have to sub if you want to join the end game community. Their cash shops dont even sells weapons and armor. Just account perks like extra char slots.

Want a new dungeon!? Buy it on the player studio! Only $2.99 with $0.47 going to the player that created it!
No thanks.
That would actually be awesome. Everyone would want to try to create an awesome dungeon and if they were successful, could make substantial money (given your $$ allocation).

Rock is sandbox. Pop is themepark.
If that were true. Then WoW, the King of Themeparks, would be the King of Pop. i.e. the late Michael Jackson. NOT J Beiber.

If that were true. Then WoW, the King of Themeparks, would be the King of Pop. i.e. the late Michael Jackson. NOT J Beiber.
Then most MMOers would be wishing to play a MMO that was the kid of this king of pop and king of rock. Im not sure why that idea makes me sick.
J.Bieber is popular and making tons of money. To me popular = most likely shit. There are exceptions of course but WoW is not one of them.
This and the McDonald's arguments are asinine.
You are incorrectly assuming Bieber is in the business of selling music. Just like you are looking at WoW compared to your tastes in games.
Is WoW a terrible sandbox? Yes. Because it's not a sandbox. Not all MMO's are sandboxes.
Is WoW a good themepark? Yes. Probably one of the best ever.
Bieber is selling fantasy to young girls and pervs. Not music. The music is totally and utterly arbitrary, that's why you can't understand why he's "popular" because you're not the targeted demographic for it.
McDonalds isn't selling food. They are selling consistency, cheapness, and convenience. And they are wildly successful at doing so. Their entire business model is built around selling those concepts and not food. Food just happens to be the vehicle they have chosen to sell those concepts with.
Coach sells image and status recognition. The bags aren't very well made, the leather is fairly crappy and the designs are boring or copycats at best.
And so on.
You need to accept that MMO is a general taxonomy of a type of game. There are many genres within it and many forms of MMO. It's like saying FPS can only be space marine vs aliens and any other type is not a FPS because it doesn't match your predefined sci-fi genre.

I agree. Smedley once said people would have "system-level tools" for creating stuff. I didn't know quite what he meant but this seems quite possible.. lots of content. Lots of money. At PAX East, Georgeson kept talking about how there would be ways to be the best at things other than combat. He wasn't "allowed" to elaborate but I got the sense that people will be producing things that people can rate/like/buy player-made stuff and stars will be born in the process.

I remember a friend who got into WoW.. He would wake up, go to work, go home and play WoW until bed time... sleep... rinse, repeat. And he was just grinding during that time! His guild would literally guilt the hell out of him if he wanted to spend time with friends in the real world one night. All I can think of for comparrison is a slot machine... just the same repetition over and over... highly profitable for people making the games, but I wonder what he got out of it? Was he even playing the game for the fun of it, or some weird progression meta-game?

This is where gallus' point about horizontal progression is important.. makes it so you can't be effortlessly curb-stomped by some jerk with a better toon. They have to work for it. And yes, you have to be a smart player to avoid being a victim because people will come after you.

Darkfall was a flop.
SWG didn't do so hot.
Many more examples to be had.
My wife and I are hoping for a great OWPvP game, but we know that it's almost certainly going to have PVE and PVP servers. In fact, aside from this being logical, it's more preferable. We don't want to have a server full of people who don't want to PVP in the first place.
You might want to tell all that to Bidwood, because that guy is fully down the path of denial about FFA PVP.
Sub-standard? What is the standard? EVE has been very successful. So was UO for its time. You're forgetting it was basically the first.

Ah I see your point. Let me clarify. I'm always really excited at the prospect of a triple-A virtual world with full PVP. I think EQN will have it. But if it doesn't, I am disappointed and then move on and wait for the next chance. When I say I'm not invested enough, I mean in the EverQuest franchise. I don't need this game to be my game. I just really want it to. This lack of passion does not a rioter make.
As for what I get out of posting here... I've made a few like-minded friends and plan to meet up with them in game. And reminisce about all the fools who didn't have the foresight to see what we saw. Cheers.
I really hate to sound like a troll, but I would love love LOVE if SOE said EQN was a super PVE themepark with shit endgame. Not because it's what I want, but because I think that would be able to alienate the entire MMO playerbase. I'm sorry, but if we are talking about riots, then that is what they need to say to make riots.
"It's gonna be Free to Play but you have to sub if you want to use the cash shop, no endgame dungeons to make this an 'open world' environment, and we have eschewed PVP for an interactive battle crafting system, and only the winner gets to keep what he/she was making." Oh yeah, now that would make everyone hate them.
Speaking more seriously, there's nothing that can be said to make everyone happy, so we'll see some vitriol whether we like it or not. Personally, I like the setting enough that I'll likely give it a try with whatever they really put out, as long as it tries to keep with the setting. Then again, I'm more in favor of both PVE and themeparks in general, so I don't identify with most people crossing their fingers hoping to win the EQN lottery.

How about Rock 'N Roll became popular instead of Polka.
Rock is sandbox. Pop is themepark.
If that were true. Then WoW, the King of Themeparks, would be the King of Pop. i.e. the late Michael Jackson. NOT J Beiber.
Then most MMOers would be wishing to play a MMO that was the kid of this king of pop and king of rock. Im not sure why that idea makes me sick.
Despite what others have said, my "there are a lots of them" was about the "anyone who wants" and not the game type.

Yes... I will be gloating like crazy.
This is where gallus' point about horizontal progression is important.. makes it so you can't be effortlessly curb-stomped by some jerk with a better toon. They have to work for it. And yes, you have to be a smart player to avoid being a victim because people will come after you.
"A kick in the butt."
Cheers.

Once the game is over, the king and the pawn go back in the same box. ~ Italian proverb
