I understand that SOE are using the same engine as Planetside, does that mean there is a chance it will be a first person game? Or do we think it will be a regular third person game?
3rd person as in WoW, Rift and others, with the ability to go to First Person. Im guessing pretty much like every other MMO. I doubt it will be 3rd person like Diablo.
Just because I'm a gamer doesn't mean I drive a Honda.

This. Very unlikely we'll see first person as in a FPS.
It's a deal breaker for me, I just can't play first person games but I'm hoping that they take the sensible option and go third person or at least let you choose.

I would take a logical guess and say third person for sure... maybe basic first person but def not with hands and such....
"The King and the Pawn return to the same box at the end of the game"
Even though EQ1 was primarily played first person and it was my favorite MMO ever, I have to say I'd prefer it to be designed for third person. I don't know, I just like being able to see my character.

Hmm, I never thought of over-the-shoulder as "third person". It think of "third person" as that top down crap in Shadowbane or Diablo and one of the many EQ view options.
For me, mouse-wheeling from first person to over-the-shoulder is such a well-polished standard now I'd hate to see it changed for the sake of change.
Then again, I respect the choice of hardcore games like Wurm Online to restrict you to pure 1st person.
It should have views, just like EQ, if I remember correctly, the engine was made primarily for EQ, but as it kept being redone, PS2 came out first on it. I cannot see SoE doing a engine for a EQ based mmo and not have traditional views, to where you can play in 3rd and 1st, like EQ. No matter what other secret surprises they have in store.

As a previous poster mentioned, the engine has very little to do with the perspective. Engines are for drawing polygons and coloring them. Perspective is just where you place the camera amid the colored polygons. You have to do some additional coding to implement options like EQ has, which are fairly robust, but it's not like they're going to say "Oh, we wanted to add a third person option, but the engine only supports first!"
If I had to choose, first or third, I'd go with first, it's how I more frequently play EQ now. I don't get all worked up about it though, and sometimes pull back to see more, or just look at my characters. It's actually an element of player skill, but for immersion, first person is much better.
As you can see in this thread, there are many people who don't like 1st person, and since there is no technical limitation to implementing both, I would be shocked if they don't.

While the point-of-view can be anywhere in an engine, some engine handle things far away (3rd person) better than in first person. FOV is mostly the thing that sucks the most, followed by hands/1 first animations. PS2 being 1st person though, I would say that Forgelight handle 1st person really well.
Also, part of me wish that EQN was 1st person only...you know, just to be realllllly different.
Even reticle based combat works with both first and third person views.. I hope it has both but not sure about seeing your hands in first. The "real view" with your equipped items may make it hard to see.
Absolutely it will be 3rd person. First person is all about immersion and exploration. Most gamers don't want that these days. They want to see the back of their character, watch it flip around, have 360 vision so they're never vulnerable. SoE will follow the money, they won't make another first person like EQ1. This is also the reason the game will have maps and GPS so you never get lost. Welcome to the future of MMOs. Accessibility
Yes I know EQ1 could be played in 3rd but it was primarily designed for first person in the beginning.
Its not guaranteed from the engine they are using and unless someone knows something I don't, SOE has not stated definitively.
It could go either way really.
This is where I get to make that oh so prevalent argument that so many people just love to make on these forums:
1st person locked is too niche, theres just no way. behold my logic. Look at Mortal Online. /thread
I agree. Even though I believe strongly that 1st person is more immersive (because after awhile you feel like you are looking through your own eyes at the world), 3rd person allows better control and the ability to see your cool avatar and his/her armor weapons, etc....
I would be a pack of opened Twinkies that this game is 3rd person like WOW.
I can promise it will be 3rd. 1st person was awesome when the games were about experience, immersion, and fun. Now they're about the masses and money. I foresee PVP, PVE, Player created content that sucks, 3rd person, and anything else you can think of that would appeal to everyone that isn't on this forum. We are the minority.
There's been a whole lot of, "Since Planetside 2 uses the Forgelight engine, and Planetside 2 has X feature, can we expect Everquest Next to also have X feature?"
The answer to this would be no. What engine a game uses can have very little to do with gameplay. For example, World of Warcraft uses a modified version of the engine for Warcraft 3, an RTS game.
DCUO, Lineage 2, Vanguard and Tera all use versions of the Unreal Engine 2 and 3.

Funnily enough its actually always been that way. I can link you to several studies if you are honestly interested.
I did battle with ignorance today, and ignorance won.
To exercise power costs effort and demands courage. That is why so many fail to assert rights to which they are perfectly entitled - because a right is a kind of power but they are too lazy or too cowardly to exercise it. The virtues which cloak these faults are called patience and forbearance.

some MMOs are isometric view, like Might quest for epic loot
Not all!
GW2 completely lacked 1st person at launch. Possibly still does.
Many of us were utilizing the "lay on the ground and zoom in" trick to try to get scenic screenshots because of this. Trying to find workarounds.

I'm going to scream if it's an RPG overview from the sky.
First person with 3rd person zoom out, or bust.
The way EQ did it was perfect.
