I am a huge fan of DnL tus far, but I can't ignore that this smells fishy. First they promise the relase of the game last year spring, then November, now April 06' all the while giving us small tastes of video clips and awsome images and story lines. Then they open up and sell 8,000 $60 dollar memberships promising admision to the game in April with perks and the free SoG Dec. 8th.
Then Dec 8th comes around and 10,000 free slots are gone in less than a minute? That along seems odd. It would imply that 10,000 people were literally hitting the refreash button every second until they got it as soon as 6:00 GMT came around.
This wouldnt be to much of a fishy issue for me if in fact people we able to download the game like they were promised right now, but we can't. Why? Something is up.
Don't read things where there aren't guys. I'm sure SoG will be out shortly with the features announced. Read that phrase twice though. Do not expect all the neat DnL features, this is SoG, not DnL.
They promised a world to explore, transport, fortresses, monsters and game events. If you expect any more than that, including what you would normally expect from MMORPGs because you've seen it in all others, then you're going to be disappointed. Full-fledged character development, crafting, religion, pHaT LeWt, quests, populated cities were NOT promised in SoG.
Read the features announced, expect that, and ONLY that, and you may not be disappointed.

The thing that gets me is "we wont be playing with china because of the laws bla bla" then we find out that they are coming, only they didnt need to cue or anything they got invites with free armours if you use CN in your name. also they got a nice little guide on how to lvl up nice for them huh?

I dunno why people are talking about hitting the refresh key. The registration page was up and running at least an hour before hand. I merely entered my details on the stroke of 6PM, then got a message saying it wasnt time yet, hit 'back', tried again and it processed it succesfully.
Was no lag or anything and i didnt really rush, everyone i know got one except 1 person, cos he was playing online chess lol. One guy (noob) even got 5, some of which he is Ebaying, which is shit. :O

And wabbacha, you've been following this game for how long? You seem not to know very much about it. Given its history and its current progress thus far, the additional time does not mean that the game will not be rushed to get it done. Believe me, at its current rate, the game will have to be released way before it is ready. By the way, I already knew that SoG was going to be delayed. I can't recall anything regarding DnL or SoG actually coming out on time. Anytime they say a due date, expect it to be later. Even after saying it will be ready on the 13th, there is maybe a 50% chance that it will be actually ready to play on the 13th.
I honestly have nothing against the game. I have very high hopes for this game. But I also fear very much that it will not deliver. The key for playing DnL, or SoG, is that you are going to have to be very patient, and never expect something great to happen, because you are only looking for a let down. If something great happens, that's awesome, but to expect it out of this game/company would be foolish.
As for SoG, I never even tried for a key. Not necessarily because I wouldn't want to play, but I just don't have significant time to play, or the want to play it with the features that will be available yet. I can wait til DnL to see if the reviews are good after true release.

Today I logged in about 30 min. before accounts were availible. About 5 mins before I began to spam the registration.
I kid you not... one run: "You cannot register until 18:00 GMT" the next (within 15-20sec) "We're sorry, Registration for SoG is full."
I understand this game has a cult following, but, let's get real. You take out the 8881 pioneers (who are argueably the most die-hard fans) then you are left with whoever is left... 10,000 accounts gone in a matter of seconds?
That tells me that DnL is a lot more popular than once believed, and that a whole lot of people jumped at the chance to play a mmorpg for free for 6 months.
My guess though is that the latter type are who got most of the free keys. Poeple who aren't as interested in DnL as they are in playing a pvp game for free for 6 months, giving them a nice chance to disrupt the game as much as they can.
Majority of these free players won't be around for DnL when it goes P2P.
I got in BTW. I was lucky. But I'm expecting mayhem all through SoG.

To begin with the product he PAYED for is to be delivered in APRIL 2006. The offer advertised to start december 8th was a FREE bonus, reread the complete offer.
I'm tired of people thinking it was fishy that 10k accounts were gone in seconds. Think of it in a positive way. They learned from the mistake they made on november 24th and prepared for it correctly. (on november 24th fact is +/- 3k people crashed the server)
I can understand people being frustrated of not being able to play but please lighten up and think straight. The whole reason for the late start is that they prepared the register process to run smoothly instead of focusing on the client. I was amazed at the speed as well when I logged in to register my account. My first thought was kudos to them, too bad they had to delay five more days but I'll live. (I heard a rumor somewhere that the game server and its connection was used to display this page. (don't quote it as fact))
Being frightened is wrong, you made a "leap of faith"-kind decision if you bought the pioneer account. If you were afraid it might not come out or know you would be if you had bought a pioneer pack and SoG wouldn't come out on dec 8th you should have let other people have a chance at that offer. If you were frightened something bad might happen but took a leap of faith you're an idiot. I'm not saying you can't voice your frustrations just not your fears if you bought a pioneer.
It was stated SoG would be live Dec 8th period, nothing to do with pioneer or freebie keys. NOBODY purchased acces to SoG. Pioneers purchased acces to DnL. The last two facts were very clear to me when I read the Pioneer description and AD discussions around it. You didn't pay for SoG turn it how you wish.
I too feel frustrated for all those who planned their day for the release date, took their day off or declared being sick, it wasn't a decent company's decision. However AD had let it shine through in the forums that you probably wouldn't be playing dec 8th but they didn't have much more information imo.
Hype doesn't have to do with much if it isn't that hyped people are more vocal when they bump into a deception and that hyped people tend to forget to read between the lines.

Then of course, there's the whole website crashing during pre-orders bit that kind of makes me doubt DnL's ability to handle 10,000+ people all clicking the same button within a 2-3 minute timespan.
I'm not saying this game doesn't have a following - I'm still amazed that nearly 9,000 people were willing to pre-order a game despite a lack of first-hand info - but I wonder if they are exaggerating it in order to make them seem better or if they're afraid their servers can't handle 18,881 people over the course of a day.
Anyways, when the game does go on-line hopefully some of you can see if there's a /who command to get a feeling of how many people are playing the game throughout the day and whether the numbers given to us were faked/twisted.
I've never seen anything like it before. I waited until the time...counting down the seconds, then had to take a phone call at work (maybe took 60 seconds max) and when I hung up the phone and clicked on the SoG link.. POOF... said I had to wait until the next round of SoG becomes available.
The bad part is that I tried telling some friends about the SoG and the game and they couldn't access the webpage to even look at it. I ended up providing them a link to DnL Stratics boards instead.

I realize you personally may be frustrated with your own personal problems, but there is ZERO reason to take it out on me by calling me ignorant for asking a question. People reserve games all the time and games get delayed. Deal with it.

One of their normal pages at the site, say http://www.darkandlight.net/article.php3?id_article=346 (gnome race) does not contain a lot of data and it only makes three simple database queries, one for your forum account (top-right corner), one for the data on the article and an update to article's popularity. More or less something like this: SELECT username FROM accounts WHERE username LIKE '$username' AND password = PASSWORD($password); SELECT title, text, popularity FROM articles WHERE id = $article_id;
However, a forum is quite complicated and demanding on processing power (esp. their search functions). It constantly makes a lot of complex database queries that cross-reference data from seperate tables and a lot of calculations for page generation (scripted in PHP, ASP, etc). This was the reason why the problem with pre-orders occured, because of the extra traffic, not only on the ordering page, but also the increased traffic in the forums.

How many times must we repeat: PIONEERS != SETTLERS. 8.881 pioneers from the pre-order, 10.000 settlers from the free registration.
I really do not understand the confusion over this. It's been clear since the first announcement on Nov 24th that there will be 8881 pre-orders of DnL with guaranteed access to SoG and a first wave of 10.000 Settler accounts, which are free of any charge.

If you expect any more than that, including what you would normally expect from MMORPGs because you've seen it in all others, then you're going to be disappointed. Full-fledged character development, crafting, religion, pHaT LeWt, quests, populated cities were NOT promised in SoG.
Read the features announced, expect that, and ONLY that, and you may not be disappointed.
The thing that gets me is "we wont be playing with china because of the laws bla bla" then we find out that they are coming, only they didnt need to cue or anything they got invites with free armours if you use CN in your name. also they got a nice little guide on how to lvl up nice for them huh?
why did snailgames give them a guide to lvl up? where is ours from AD?

I dunno why people are talking about hitting the refresh key. The registration page was up and running at least an hour before hand. I merely entered my details on the stroke of 6PM, then got a message saying it wasnt time yet, hit 'back', tried again and it processed it succesfully.
Was no lag or anything and i didnt really rush, everyone i know got one except 1 person, cos he was playing online chess lol. One guy (noob) even got 5, some of which he is Ebaying, which is shit. :O

first off....pioneers were'nt intened for the whinny bunch that i have been seen doing the majority of flame fest posting, they were for us who have been with this game for a while and believe in it, and don't mind delays for it only brings forth a better more developed game, not rushed like many titles we all have come to know as "fanboy games"...
second off......no one owe's anyone a damn thing untill april of 2006 were we will than get to play the game we paid for. Until than we have been given a free spot in SOG with "benifits", which in turn transfer over to our game in 2006. as for the free accounts, all 10,000 are totally free of charge any one who recieved one of these accounts will also be able to play in SOG upon release.

ok, i went onto the DnL website at 12:59 am and added my info, submitted, and it said i was to recieve a key. well, i have yet to recieve the key in my e-mail, and that was 4 hours ago. either they are VERY slow or it was all a gimmick.
Horizons had a "black out" and the evil David Bowman took control of the company and turned it into a business. Like any Business man he ONLY thought about $$. They changed (eie cheapened) the games development and realeased a severly unfisnished product. 7 months later went bankrupt, Dave Bowman started a new company Tulga and bought the bankrupt Horisons free of debt and trying re-releasing/pushing it on the MMORPG community.
This utter lack of respect and overly greedy person now is the epitomy of what NEVER to do in the MMORPG buisiness. Horizons and anything related with them are croks... I hope NPcube doesnt start to loose their fanbase becauase they feel the don't have to explain whats their doing or whats going on...!

And wabbacha, you've been following this game for how long? You seem not to know very much about it. Given its history and its current progress thus far, the additional time does not mean that the game will not be rushed to get it done. Believe me, at its current rate, the game will have to be released way before it is ready. By the way, I already knew that SoG was going to be delayed. I can't recall anything regarding DnL or SoG actually coming out on time. Anytime they say a due date, expect it to be later. Even after saying it will be ready on the 13th, there is maybe a 50% chance that it will be actually ready to play on the 13th.
I honestly have nothing against the game. I have very high hopes for this game. But I also fear very much that it will not deliver. The key for playing DnL, or SoG, is that you are going to have to be very patient, and never expect something great to happen, because you are only looking for a let down. If something great happens, that's awesome, but to expect it out of this game/company would be foolish.
As for SoG, I never even tried for a key. Not necessarily because I wouldn't want to play, but I just don't have significant time to play, or the want to play it with the features that will be available yet. I can wait til DnL to see if the reviews are good after true release.

Today I logged in about 30 min. before accounts were availible. About 5 mins before I began to spam the registration.
I kid you not... one run: "You cannot register until 18:00 GMT" the next (within 15-20sec) "We're sorry, Registration for SoG is full."
I understand this game has a cult following, but, let's get real. You take out the 8881 pioneers (who are argueably the most die-hard fans) then you are left with whoever is left... 10,000 accounts gone in a matter of seconds?

That tells me that DnL is a lot more popular than once believed, and that a whole lot of people jumped at the chance to play a mmorpg for free for 6 months.
My guess though is that the latter type are who got most of the free keys. Poeple who aren't as interested in DnL as they are in playing a pvp game for free for 6 months, giving them a nice chance to disrupt the game as much as they can.
Majority of these free players won't be around for DnL when it goes P2P.
I got in BTW. I was lucky. But I'm expecting mayhem all through SoG.

-The 8881 pioneer accounts were PAID for. IT was stated tat SoG pioneers will be live Dec 8th and it was one of the many reasons some purchased it. It is now Dec 9th, we are not playing as we were promes, they DELAYED SoG to Dec 13th and has not decided to tell us till late into Dec 8th. Some people planned their day around the event.

Did they really release 10,000 keys yesterday?
Admittedly, I didn't get one (came on at 6:02
) so maybe I'm a little cheesed, but I'm just looking at their website and considering past situations, it feels like this is another marketing ploy with tricky language. I mean, the website says:
"The first 10.000 Settlers are ready to begin their adventure." That seems to imply there are only 10K people who got keys INCLUDING the 8,881 people who pre-ordered - leaving about 1,119 keys for free. Then of course, there's the whole website crashing during pre-orders bit that kind of makes me doubt DnL's ability to handle 10,000+ people all clicking the same button within a 2-3 minute timespan.
I'm not saying this game doesn't have a following - I'm still amazed that nearly 9,000 people were willing to pre-order a game despite a lack of first-hand info - but I wonder if they are exaggerating it in order to make them seem better or if they're afraid their servers can't handle 18,881 people over the course of a day.
Anyways, when the game does go on-line hopefully some of you can see if there's a /who command to get a feeling of how many people are playing the game throughout the day and whether the numbers given to us were faked/twisted.
I've never seen anything like it before. I waited until the time...counting down the seconds, then had to take a phone call at work (maybe took 60 seconds max) and when I hung up the phone and clicked on the SoG link.. POOF... said I had to wait until the next round of SoG becomes available.
The bad part is that I tried telling some friends about the SoG and the game and they couldn't access the webpage to even look at it. I ended up providing them a link to DnL Stratics boards instead.

One of their normal pages at the site, say http://www.darkandlight.net/article.php3?id_article=346 (gnome race) does not contain a lot of data and it only makes three simple database queries, one for your forum account (top-right corner), one for the data on the article and an update to article's popularity. More or less something like this:
SELECT username FROM accounts WHERE username LIKE '$username' AND password = PASSWORD($password);
SELECT title, text, popularity FROM articles WHERE id = $article_id;
However, a forum is quite complicated and demanding on processing power (esp. their search functions). It constantly makes a lot of complex database queries that cross-reference data from seperate tables and a lot of calculations for page generation (scripted in PHP, ASP, etc). This was the reason why the problem with pre-orders occured, because of the extra traffic, not only on the ordering page, but also the increased traffic in the forums.

I really do not understand the confusion over this. It's been clear since the first announcement on Nov 24th that there will be 8881 pre-orders of DnL with guaranteed access to SoG and a first wave of 10.000 Settler accounts, which are free of any charge.
