My internet provider, Comcast, raised the rates yet again. I'm in Champaign Illinois USA. As far as I know there is no one else who offers internet here. Only online games I play now are Sims 2 (downloading custom content and meshing for the community is the online part; it's not tech an mmo but like hell can you enjoy play without internet connect), Minecraft (can mmo), and Little Big Planet (console mmo). I'm waiting on ArcheAge, Skyrim Online, Otherland, etc. I would hate to loose online access but the cost of living up up up. I've already stepped uncomfortably outside my budget.
Anyone else having problems with their provider? Ever find a solution?

The only thing to do is wait for Google Fiber.
What cable companies are charging for the terrible speeds we get in the US is unacceptable.
I feel for you. There are some options, but none of them are great.
A metered cellular option can work, if you get cell access in your area. These will be metered, but can be a lot less expensive (I think Cricket has one for around $45, you may be able to get it cheaper with an existing cellular plan or another carrier).
Some areas have WiFi access - I know in our area AT&T sells it in some areas that have DSL coverage.
Satellite coverage exists in most of the US. WildBlue and HughesNet are the 2 biggest carriers. These have high latency, and bandwidth caps, but packages start fairly cheap.
If your in a fairly densly populated area (suburbs or dorm/apartment or something) - you may be able to broker a deal with your neighbors to "share" internet. I've done this before too - it's not exactly legal, but a case of beer a month is a lot cheaper than the $90+ a cable/IP package can run.
Yup...
My current provider just cut our bandwidth in half (it was advertised as "faster speed packages available" - but really they just took the existing packages added a couple in the middle, and doubled the price of the top tier) -- and additionally, now unless you have a top-tier package, service calls get a back seat priority, with basic access getting "7 days turnaround" and top-tier getting "24-hour turnaround".
I'd look to see if there is a wireless ISP serving your area. Many use the 5ghz band and can serve households that have LOS (line of sight) to their tower(s). A CPE unit gets mounted on the house and provides ethernet connectivity.
They make their money by serving areas that don't have other broadband, or buy under-pricing cable and DSL providers. Rates are generally quite competitive.
Yeah bud it's crazy, Rogers absolute lowest crap internet, which like, couldn't even load a webpage nowadays, is $42 a month. Thankfully I don't have to worry about that stuff too much, but I can see where you're coming from, the prices are ridiculous.
And I'm not sure if this applies to people outside of Canada or not, but we also have had this new rip off thing added onto our internet which limits our internet usage monthly, our internet package was supposed to be like $75 I believe, and looking at the bills it was like $175, just from going over the usage limit.
Like I said, not sure if that applies to anywhere outside of Canada, but it's crazy, and if you are going over your usage, you might be better off upgrading your internet package, getting faster speeds and higher monthly usage, for free pretty much since you'd be paying more on the slower package just for usage.
If you're really trying to save money, buying modems outright instead of renting as well, might save you a few bucks in the long run, just make sure you do the math, like $8 a month for a modem, probably $100 or $150 to buy it outright, so if you're planning on having it a year and a few months, you'll save money just from buying it.
Hope this helps you a bit, not sure if you were looking for solutions or just bringing up a general observations. I wanted to type it out anyways haha.
In Saudi Arabia atm and its cheaper to get 3G internet than wired at the same speeds and less cutoffs. Im paying 100 SAR for a months which is about 27 USD. Unlimited bandwidth with 7mb down/ 2mb up. Much better than the Time Warner I had in NY for 50 USD a month.
The only thing is that I have to tether it from my phone. Maybe you can find some unlimited 3g internet with good signal on your place? But then again...I never found unlimited net in USA and they made you pay for tethering in AT&T....
Edit : If you follow EvilMix advice, make sure you check your bills. I did that with AT&T and didn't notice that they were still charging for the modem even if I returned it -.-
