I wanted to see something like this.

Some people ask why so many are disappointed. I think it's the art style, the gameplay, it looks all a bit childish, making your own world with another game, gimmicky.

I wanted to see something real, gritty, a world that makes you group out of fear, a hardcore game like EQ.

I did not want to see the lion King prancing around

I saw the new Black Desert trailer the other day, I wanted to see this:

Why do asian-style MMO's which never, ever shine bright in the end always attract people with their "pretty" graphics? Do people really need to see hyper-realism on the PC instead of out the window?

Looks miles better than what SoE showed.

Perhaps to yourself, but to myself I find what SoE showed to be incredible. And that footage in the OP to be incredibly generic.

Those realistic graphics will be old in about 2 years. If you don't play a game for it's graphic, then it's like watching porn for its story.

So many were disapointed? from various polls it seems like about 70%+ are quite optimistic after what we saw today, considering the mmo community have all sorts of people id say 70% is just about as good as it gets.

Personally my only issue with the graphics was the kerran mixed with the oversized shoulderpads, other then that I looked awesome, and in my opinion it reminded me more of bioshock infinite then wow, the fact that they have managed this with voxels makes it even more awesome.

That said, I am a big fan of gritty graphics myself, however I don't think it would lend itself well to a voxel based world.

I hate to go bringing critical thinking skills into a whine-fest, but....

At least 95% of the people who play MMOs can't afford a rig that will even begin to render those graphics at that quality and a decent framerate, along with particle effects, other players, NPCs. mobs, etc.

Have you seen what "realistic" graphics look like when you have to scale all the sliders down for a shitty computer?  A hell of a lot worse than scaling down the type of graphics EQN will have.

That's to say nothing of longevity.  In my experience, "realistic" games age visually much faster than stylized games.  At least until we have true photo-realism, which is a long ways off for mainstream MMOs.

    You're dreaming.

A sure sign that you are in an old, dying paradigm/mindset, is when you are scared of new ideas and new technology. Don't feel bad. The world is moving on without you, and you are welcome to yell "Get Off My Lawn!" all you want while it happens. You cannot, however, stop an idea whose time has come.

I usually don't like cartoon or stylized graphics. But in the case of EQ next I like it. Because it's done to allow characters to be more expressive and easily seen from distance as well.

I'm sick of WoW like a lot of other people, but I'm not sick of it because of its graphics. EQN wasn't even on my radar until today. I'm actually looking forward to seeing how it pans out now.

I also like the look of Black Desert and will probably check it out too eventually.

    Current: None
Played: WoW, CoX, SWG, LotRO, EVE, AoC, VG, CO, Ryzom, DF, WAR
Tried: Lineage2, Dofus, EQ2, CoS, FE, UO, Wurm, Wakfu
Future: The Repopulation, ArcheAge, Black Desert, EQN

im still on the wall about it. ill try it, i like the blood in black desert, if Eqn gives me blood to make up for a cartoon world im in.

but you haft to admit they failed on the promise of hardcore and "metal".  i can already see this game with an E-for everyone rating

Woah, that game looked cool as &*(#&$. Though, I am sad. I know EQN will be better game wise, I just am forced to ... deal with cartoons with oversized hands, feet, shoulders again. /sigh.
  • KanethKaneth Member RarePosts: 2,286

Honestly, comparing the two, I prefer EQNext.

Black Desert looked really cool, but for me the environment around the characters was lacking. It was pretty minimalistic, and the close ups on the blades of grass looked bad. EQNext is stylized, but the environments, for me, looked more appealing.

I really didn't like the purple spell effect from the video either, I'd prefer something more "cartoony". I also grew up playing JRPGs and watch a ton of anime, could be the difference :P

Meh I think this style of combat and graphics are boring and more conducive to a single player game then an MMO.  EQN looks miles ahead and coupled with the 4 pillars of its gameplay will revolutionize the genre.  Black Desert looks to be more of the same ole same.

Random Forum Poster: I want an MMO that is different, original and fun.

Me: So you want something like EQN

Them: Nah dude, I want a Holy Trinity, Tab Target combat, Instanced Raiding, and Rigid classes.

    Me: Double Facepalm.

yea i don't care for catoony graphics, but content is what makes me play the game. I don't see how building your own world with in a world is gimmicky, but i'm really looking forward to that part personally!

Sadly the minority are the ones who scream the loudest.  Meanwhile the people who are anticipating more of what to come are waiting.  The majority usually remain silent.

One of my all time favorite games was also one of the ugliest games I have ever played: Tribes.  I learned a long time ago that great gameplay trumps graphics by a long shot.  Still, what *little* we saw of EQN today didn't leave me thinking it looked bad at all.

I also thought GW2 was going to look bad, but it ended up growing on my and looking stunning at times.  Right now, EQN's graphics are the last thing on my mind about the game.

What I did like in this show was that they had a warrior and a wizard no showoff for large Groups, hope they focus their content for small Groups.

EQN looks unearthly...really, with all these features (and we have yet to see crafting) I think one can spend his entrile gaming life in that game...

Doubt you'll have to worry about the lion king, most of it will be ordinary humanoids like usual.

    Kerran weren't very popular

    You're dreaming.

Not sure how you come to the figure of 95% unless you mean in North America as us UK players who are serious gamers have multi PC's I have 4 on my desk and build a new rig every two years and replace one of the older ones. I can play any game at any date and get maximum performance from them.

I'm not happy with the way EQN looks I do not like that stupid lion race and again the over sized armour makes it look Wowish, however I love the idea of multi layer worlds and only time will tell if we can get them to change the look to a cleaner character then I'd be happy.

I refused to play Wow on the basic it was cartoony as shit and I am not playing no cartoon game don't give a shit who makes it. It also look far to easy for me but to be fair we don't know what the A1 will be like until launch. Smed said the game will be out late 2013 lets hope they start cranking up beta this month to see how the game performs.

I'm going to hold of judging this until it leaves beta because much can change if they do listen to the community then voices could impact what they have planned.

Every single person who is crying about EQN being a WoW clone or for children is doing it completely based on seeing the graphics and character models.

    Which is beyond absurd.

    Playing: Smite, Marvel Heroes
Played: Nexus:Kingdom of the Winds, Everquest, DAoC, Everquest 2, WoW, Matrix Online, Vangaurd, SWG, DDO, EVE, Fallen Earth, LoTRo, CoX, Champions Online, WAR, Darkfall, Mortal Online, Guild Wars, Rift, Tera, Aion, AoC, Gods and Heroes, DCUO, FF14, TSW, SWTOR, GW2, Wildstar, ESO, ArcheAge
Waiting On: Nothing. Mmorpg's are dead.

Everquest Next looks really good to me. Looking forward to playing it. Black Deserts is just more like my type of game. I like Korean mmos and especially the direction they are going.

i agree but people that are pissed about the art style really do have a legitimate gripe, it looks nothing like an EQ game, people bitch about TESO not looking like ES? EQN is way worse in that regard.

its going to take me a while to get used to this, if at all.
