I just got back from work and was really excited to read about EQ Next. All my wife could say when I opened the door was how disappointed she was. Looking at the videos and the description and watching the little bit of combat footage the game they created is obviously not Everquest.
It seems that a lot of people are upset by the art direction and I'm definitely one of them. The game looks great, but Everquest 1/2 had a unique look to it which I know some people didn't like but if you played for awhile you probably identify it. This game looks like several other games on the market, not a unique game with a storied history and world.
One of the best parts for me of Everquest 1 and 2 was mastering your class, the fact that this game doesn't have class distinction and that you can just learn other classes abilities is a serious turn off. Everquest forced you to party with people who had skills you didn't to accomplish goals. What's the point of grouping if I can be a plate wearing healer who can dps from range when I'm bored with melee.
I currently play GW2 and while it's fun to PVP and be able to get some satisfaction within 20 minutes of gameplay, that's most definitely not an aspect of Everquest. How can you call it everquest if there aren't any quests? Real time events don't count as quests...
Just really disappointed as I was seriously looking forward to this.

Rose-colored glasses if people think EQ1 with better graphics is somehow going to sell in today's market.
Did you not take to heart what Smedley said when he mentioned the franchise was moving forward?
I am curious how dedicated and loyal EQ/EQ2 players react and thinks of EQN thus far?

Or Hate it because the world and the characters do not look like EQ at all?
Maybe it would have a smaller demographic, but why does every game have to be catered to WoW casuals. I don't understand it, SoE said they are doing something different, and they come out with something that looks nothing like EQ or EQ2 but looks very much like WoW.
im sitting here laughing at the fact people are completely crushed by what SoE showed. they showed some amazing new concepts that people have been asking for FOR YEARS, built and in operation. they also said that this isn't the everquest you know, it is new and different but will be familiar at the same time.
and they showed very very little about the details of the game. what was shown was essentially a brief overview of the features that will be present. how can you make statements on classes when they have shown almost nothing about them beyond wizard and warrior exist and can use 2 abilities? you can't.
i'm now convinced that blizzard postponed titan because they got wind of this game. this is the breath of fresh air the mmo industry has needed for so many years and i am very excited to see where it will go from here on out. this level of complexity within the game world will become the new standard; why do you think warcraft 3 / starcraft were so popular for so long? because of the dev tools and player-made mods that were put out. sony has caught onto this and made their next flagship mmo around it. i couldn't be happier, now all they have to do is fill in the details over the next year or so before release.

I think it's too early to say whether I'll play it or not. Have to wait to see closer to launch probably. The thing is I'm a long time EQ2 player and as cheesy as it sounds really love the world of Norrath as they created it. I recognize that some of the features they are adding it are really cool. It's just that by changing the art style they really are modifying the flavor of the world rather than building on it. I was definetly wearing rose colored glasses, but you are always gonna hope they create something similar to what you really connected to in your MMO of choice.
I've got great memories of raiding and grouping where relying on everyone to be able to support you and play your roll was key. I can't see that in a game where you can do everything and where the combat appears (could be wrong or change as we get closer to launch and more details come out). Raiding in Rift or doing a world event in GW2 never had quite the same kind of click as being in a really tight group of people and rolling through a zone. Heck in GW2 you can do a world boss and just used a range weapon and stand there, don't even need to move.
I played EQ at launch. While I have very found memories of the game Im not disillusioned enough to think they wouldnt try to find a larger player base. Without seeing any videos of the game and just hearing 90% of the features the game sounds great. What worries me is how the game will player, from the videos it looks like a button mashing frenzy. Im willing to move beyond auto attack but this looked too hectic. They say the holy trinity is still there but how can you play any roll with those kind of particle effects.
I like the idea that my friends can jump into the game easily and have fun without much commitment but along with that comes progression. I understand you can get new classes, gear,..., but how big of a difference will these make, also along those lines why should I be afraid to die?
Im sure as more info comes out it will make things more interesting but Im definitely unsure now of the final product.
They just opened a huge hole for Blizzard to run through. Skyrim sold bucketloads without selling out to the Disney/Super Mario market. For Everquest fans this means it's time to look forward to something else.

Everquest fans want a game with a deep combat system. EQ had a very detailed combat system that focused on threat, crowd control, healing and buffing. EQ2 was a bit more restrictive but still had all those core elements. It took a while to learn what your class was capable of and what was required of you for groups.
What you saw in the EQ Next reveal was Guildwars 2. No depth, just run up and hit one button then another button and watch out for the red circles of death. Games with paper thin combat/class mechanics are fun for about 20 minutes....right up until you realize that you do the same thing at level 5 as you do level 55.
Everquest was always about serious MMO mechanics. Maybe things change, but from what they showed it sure looked like easy mode Guild Wars 2 combat and that is a very bad thing.
EQ2 should not have been called "Everquest" either, as we all remember how EQ2 was at launch, it was nothing like Everquest. But when EQ2 nosedived SOE revamped the game, then started to release Everquest related expansions to make the game more like Everquest. It's now worthy of an "Everquest" title, but EQ2 was not like Everquest at all during the first 2 years.
Depending on how EQ Next goes, SOE may very well try to move the game closer to Everquest if they fail to attract mass market. This game from what we have seen, is designed for mass market just like most other new MMO's out there. But if SOE can't attract mass market and keep people for long, they'll reach back to their Everquest playerbase by moving the game closer to EQ. Like they did with EQ2.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.- FARGIN_WAR
I hear ya brother! Doesn't have a EQ feel at all to it in my opinion and was a bust to be sure.
