looks like tons of fun regardless of the graphics but what it will come down to for me is their business model.

    Best of Show: Everquest Next

"Say what? You thought this one wasn’t at E3? Well, really... it wasn’t in any official capacity. But we were treated to an early look at what SOE has planned for the game’s unveiling in August and we were quite simply blown away by every little detail we saw. This is going to sound like a cop-out, but we can't say why we are choosing EQN as our Best of Show because we've been sworn to secrecy until the big debut in August. What we can say is that we saw grand plans for the world's largest sandbox and it was more than enough to stand head and shoulders above any game we saw at E3. When Sony pulls back the curtain later this summer, you will not be disappointed. EverQuest Next is this year's E3 Best of Show, and in just a couple months you'll all understand why. We promise."

You must have seen something different to what I just saw...to say it stands head and shoulders above ANY game you saw at E3 is ridiculous. I wouldn't even say that from what we saw it stands head and shoulders above any MMO.

I would completely agree. Those are next generation graphics ??

Thats next generation art style ??

I will reserve judgement until I actually see some gameplay, honestly there is nothing to judge. They showed us a bunch of tech demos and that was pretty much it. I will say that I hope the combat is not as simple as they made it look otherwise this will be another one of those get to max level in 3 day games that we all love so much.

The art Style is either hit or miss depending on who you are, I could not overlook the art enough to enjoy WoW so I never played it seriously. I just could not look past the jumping cows....... This is pretty much more of the same art wise.

I have a sneaking suspicion this is a console game that happens to work on PC.  Not a PC game that is later trimmed to work on PS4.

Just as before today, all people had were great things to say about EQ Next because nobody knew what it was going to be like.  So people spun up all sorts of good things to say about the game because they think this game was going to cater to them.  Now that the cat is out of the bag, as I said before, people will finally get things to critique, people will start to talk about what they don't like about it because they've actually seen some of it.

I don't think it's the graphics or the art style that's bugging me. I like the cartoony art style in games...I loved how WoW looked and I like the look of Wildstar and even the cancelled Copernicus. What's bothering me is how people are being swept up by talk and promises like we have never been here before. Lets recap what we actually SAW of EQNext. We saw a couple of characters running down a tunnel like environment, leaping and double jumping there way around. Wasn't mid blowing, and I think Wildstar is doing some of that at least, but it looked alright. We saw a bit of combat...I might seem ignorant here because I never played EQ or EQ2, but we saw some things that looked very similar to WoW. We saw the Mage use a "Blink" type move, and that Warrior use "Charge" with a knockdown effect, plus an "Heroic Leap" and "Whirlwind" skill followed by "Shield Bash/Slam". Again these may have been used in EQ 1 or 2 before WoW, I don't know and I'm not claiming WoW was an innovator in ay of this stuff, but thats not the point...the point is it was VERY familiar. We also saw a Golem smash a house up...well we saw him swing, a big cloud of smoke and then half a house was left standing. How dynamic that destruction was remains to be seen, but I actually thought that was one of the better parts of the presentation. Other than that all we saw was pretty much dreams and talk. People are talking on here that they are "Blown Away" lol? By what? NONE of the actual gameplay could have done that.

Very concerning suspicion, I really hope that's not the case.  But now that you brought it up, those spell effects during combat do remind me of console games.

At this point I would try it as its F2P. Not enough info yet to say I would like it. Now what I did see I liked but in no way does it rock my world as ground breaking as I expected by Davids comments leading to this moment. Maybe the best the best info is yet to come?

P.S. I just dont see the worlds biggest sandbox yet.

I found the game play idea to be awesome.  It wasn't  Eq1 re-skinned as I hoped but deep down I honestly knew it wouldn't be anything like Original EQ.  I watch the videos today with an open mind and from what I saw, the game looks pretty amazing.

I expected the graphics to not be "fireFall-like" but I think the game looks great.

The ONE thing I saw that I did not like was the mowing-thru-50-mobs thing... I love the depth of combat with EQ1 and how one mob can take Minutes to kills, not  20-per-second they showed today.

People will hate on this game just to be Trolls.  Ignore them.  If you like what you saw today, and after you get to see more over tonight and saturday be happy and ignore the haters.

SOE could have released the best game ever made today and people would still hate and troll on it.

Some people are on this site right now talking about how much they hated what they saw today but were among the first to sign up for beta.

About the interface: no one has seen it yet but I did read on eqhammer (from the people who got to see the game at E3) there is ONE hot bar with 8 abilities on it.  None of this 6 Hotbar crap like EQ2 has.

I will be playing EQ Next.

well i didn't know what to expect like some people so i never had high expectations. Looks pretty good to me, I always try mmo's to see how they are. This one looks like it has elements i'm willing to try so hopefully its good, and hopefully its f2p/b2p so i don't have to pay another subscription fee lol! (gonna be paying for ffxiv)

A Lot of what we are seeing now is what what a lot of us predicted. The MMO that people built up in their won minds based on no information was never going to be lived up to when any real information came out.

I still don't have enough information to decide one way or another I can just say I like the concept of what was presented that is all. There is too much not presented for me to make an informed decision.

as an EQ veteran and fan i will play it , it sounds awesome, but the art style is very very disappointing for me.

i am not going to completely pass judgment until i see real gameplay vidoes when it is further along in development but i am not a fan of the cartoony graphics at all.

i am pretty shocked right now but at the same time, other than the art style it sounds like it has a lot of potential.

i may just have to suck it up like i did when i played wow. if the ogres and DE models look good at least, i will feel a lot better about it.

if not that could be a problem for me.

  • MardukkMardukk Member RarePosts: 2,222
There just isn't enough info out to make too much of an opinion. I really can't imagine how people are acting like they've played an mmo with teraforming and destructible environments. Yeah its so much like rift and wow /sarcasm. No static anything sounds inceedibly awesome and impossibly difficult to develope. It is def what many used to hope for in the genre but I think most had given up.

I will continue to play darkfall for my dark gritty fix. Unfortunately SOE went ultra uber cartoon with this. But game play is infinitely more important than graphics.

    Looks great.

Frankly there is a certain segment of the MMO player population, and gamers in general, who find fault with anything and everything. Is this for everyone, I'm sure its not. Those who want FFA PvP for example (I'm sure there will be a server but often that isn't enough).

But I think this game has a ton of potential...and based on what I saw, I of course would give it a try. I'm not sure why anyone would say they wouldn't at least try it considering it's Free to Play.

This.  I'm trying to figure out how marketing had the gall to throw "hardcore" anywhere near this game.

    exactly.

The art direction is gross... not a fan of it by any means.

I'll hold out hope and wait for more info to be released. At least the game will be free.

Looks like I'll still be waiting for my grown ups MMO however.

It is really hard to say since they havent revealed anything yet.

    Need more data.

Yeah that's a tough one. I missed the first half of the broadcast or so but I would say it's going to come down to the professions. If everybody is a fightercrafter then I'm not sure if I'd give it the title of largest sandbox. But it depends on what they mean. Do you they mean largest sandbox as in the game is a sandbox and it's physically the largest? or the most sandbox game out there?

Either way the minecrafty element and the ability to create and sell buildings is pretty damn sandboxy.

I agree completely except that the level of idiocy no longer amazes me. Instantaneous negative opinions by some based on a short presentation when there is clearly vast amounts of additional information and context to come. Oh and by the way what we have seen so far is pretty damn good. They are taking chances and pushing the design envelope which is exactly what we need. If someone doesn't do this now then MMO's don't have much of a future.

Give it a chance for Christ's sake.

People having an instantly negative opinion isn't idiocy, it's their opinion! It's just as valid as people who have an instantly positive opinion of the game. What we have seen so far is pretty damn good....to you. To other people not so much, and as for the chances they are taking...we haven't got the first clue of what chances they will be taking come release, and to be swept up by their talk and promises...that's idiocy. We can't give the game a chance until it's released...I think in actual fact what you are asking is "don't say anything bad about this game as I don't want to hear it"

The cartoony graphics need to go. We want nitty, gritty realism.  Wake up SOE-your target market is adult gamers, not 6 year olds.
  • ShezziShezzi Member Posts: 126

Been listening to the interview btwn mmorpg and the EQNext devs after the reveal.

Seems to me that one of the biggest deals about EQNext is that the world AI is behind the scenes, plotting our downfall. The Intelligent World AI lets the monsters adapt to our behaviour which is pretty cool. So Everything in the environment, from monster behaviour to the server's world geography will change on a dime (geography will change via natural disasters/cave-ins). There's no way other games have gone this far on the scale Sony's planning. The other MMO worlds don't have meaningful change, and fights happen at the same rerun places that we run up to. GW2 looks like a toddler in comparison with what EQNext is planning. I'm hoping that Sony can deliver and rejuvenate the genre.

I'm still curious about the zillions of things the devs haven't told us yet: details on pvp, travel methods, resource gathering and crafting complexity, raid sizes, guild facilities, server types etc.

I like the way the characters move, very agile, nicely animated, even hair and clothes have some flow. aka not bothered by the art.

Hope this MMO is a keeper, I think it's got potential.

I agree for the most part negative impressions are just as valid as positive ones,But I think melodramatic, knee jerk reactions based on partial information from a focused demonstration  is stupid from both sides. Not liking the art direction is fine extrapolating the whole game is shit or a wow clone from just that is dumb for example,If you can't get past the graphics that's fine to just say so and walk away and wait for a game with a style you do like.

In theory, the stuff they want the game to have sounds good.  But the combat looked crap, and the characters looked cartoony.  I could get over the character graphics (maybe), but I hope the combat is better than what we saw.

SOE's target market is the mass market, they want a slice of that pie that other larger MMORPG's are enjoying.  Whether you like it or not, it is what it is.  SOE has been going after the mass market in the recent years.  This is why I was chuckling when a month ago people thought SOE was going back to old school EQ.
