How do you think they will handle hole griefing? Say you're afk and someone comes along and busts a hole in the ground under you? Do you fall? Do you suffer fall damage? Or does it give you a popup asking whether you want to go down there?
It seems the underground layers are in pockets so while you can try to send people down you won't really know when it will work and when it won't. From the footage characters don't receive fall damage when finding a hole, there was even a "land" animation.
There are likely many ways a player could kill another if they are AFK, making a hole under you is just a new one. If you're going to AFK for a long period of time, find someplace safe or hide yourself well.
Got me thinking about holes now.. I wonder how NPCs will react to terrain. If you make a pit and lure some big golem into it, will it stay trapped? Can you fill a pit with tons of mobs? or will it smash a big path somewhere for you? Might be a fast way to mine. =P

don't go AFK ?
but seriously - I understand that issue and have no idea how to address it
in EQ1, if you went AFK
you could find yourself naked at your bind spot when you returned to your PC
sounds like an easy way to get rid of bots

Make a big hole with a smaller PC size tunnel out. If you're a ranged class get up on a high point and your party can have some fun
I know mobs attack obstacles created in front of then but not sure about what is supposed to be the default world.
Find a spot where there is a good layer of rock under you and you will be safe.
Using an ability that "dig" the ground doesn't mean there is a cave right under the spot and that what ever was on top is going to fall to its death.
