They are bringing it down so that the people in SoG can download the client. They need to free up the bandwidth from the chaos on the forums to people who are going to intereact with the game via downloading the client.

EXACTLY, seriously the forums are in complete anarchy right now its ridiculous.
Originally posted by tsr56 if thats true than you know what kind of POS amateur job this whole fiasco really is. Take down your website so you can let people download a file? hah what a joke. Theres porn sites out there that get ten times more hits and have huge movie files for download that don't even blink at the traffic.. If they can't even keep a simple website online than how do you expect them to keep a MMORPG server up and runing. ahah
Almost every single MMO I have played since release has had trouble maintaining their web-site and maintaining their login/download services at the same time on day one. They have never had to opportunity to test their systems with 10,000 eager people downloading their game client and 10,000+ people roaming around their forums.
They have never experienced this type of demand, so unfortunately they must shut down peripheral services (yes the forums at this point are considered peripheral) in order to divert the necessary resources to their main objective (exposing people to SoG). I'm not even sure they needed to bring down the web-site or simply chose to bring it down.
As for these "porn sites," I'm not sure they have 10,000 people trying to download a 700 MB (I'm guessing on the size of the client) client at the SAME TIME. Porn sites have traffic which is balanced throughout the entire day and I doubt they have many instances where everyone is trying to download one thing at the same time.
Then again the web-site could have genuinely crashed and they could be experiencing some serious, unforseen, problems with now. I'm not in their inner-circle so everything I have typed is pure conjecture.

Client is 1.3g in size.
PS: Agree with everything you said in your post. Anyone that's played WoW will tell you how bad things get during a large download or patch day. When you are at the main site. Blizzards main page used to crash almost every time a new patch was released.
Hell the site even crashed a few times during the character copies for when Test Server first came up.
PSS: The Site is back up. The Download isn't up yet though.

Umm, as for the B.S claim that no company can test their servers to check for stability with x thousands of users etc, thats crap. There are companies out there like Keynote that do exactly that. You tell them what you want to test your site for and how many users and they do it to the letter, explaining where you are weak etc.
There is no excuse whatsoever for things like this to happen.
There hasn't been a day go by since I have become active in the DNL community that the dev company hasn't dropped a bomb or somehow managed to piss off or jerk around the entire userbase.
It's really sad and faith in this game is dropping faser than George Bush's popularity polls.

Actually they seem to be using BitTorrent protocol to distribute the game, should not be a problem because I have seen 15 000+ (at once) download a Bleach episode (around 250mb) without any problem (all free tracker). More likely they messed up something because there has been no message of site going to be down.
I think I got banned from the forums, called Reunion Island a podunk island in the Indian ocean. Next message I tried to post said Administrator error: only one post per 30 seconds. Anyway, hope they don't stay pissed to long....want to get the download....

Because the forums are in utter cahos right now..
how can you tell? I couldn't log into the site... maybe the irc chat room has a link to the download torrent.
