Most programs can't use that much RAM... and unless you're doing some crazy multi-boxing on a single system, there's no need to go overboard with your system specs.
profressional is too expensive for me and just want a regular home premium version
I know 16GB is a lot, but I also want to be future proof a bit, not sure yet
I guess I will stick with Windows 7 then, just hope they have windows 9 by the time I need more than 16GB then.
8 is more than enough tbh. With the average MMO and a few web browsers open you will hover at just under 4GB so 8 definitely future proofing you.
If you have extra money to spare focus on getting a higher hertz i5 processor and 700 series NVidia card.
Im playing GW2 right now while browsing the web and my memory is hovering at 3.5
It's like CNUTemp says... 8Gb really is more than enough...
With my 8Gb of memory I can open 3 boxes of Lineage II (1920x1020 resolution windowed) , keep my mail open (Outlook) as well as the Opera (12.x) browser and still have about 20% or memory left. When I play Lineage II in lower windowed resolutions I can even open up to 6 boxes before my system starts to swap memory to the HDD
vidcards obviously change like underwear. so w/e you want to do there.

get windows 8 64bit. I use it and have no problems (I never used the start menu in any of the other windows anyways, so it's like nothing's changed for me). Base windows 8 64bit is 128gb and pro+ is 512gb...
if you need more than 128gb ram, you're doing it wrong hehe.

Found this small 'table' with the supported memory by Win7 x64
Starter: 8GB
Home Basic: 8GB
Home Premium: 16GB
Professional: 192GB
Enterprise: 192GB
Ultimate: 192GB
I only don't understand why from premium to professional it hops from very limited to so extremely high...
why do you need more than 16 GB? You don't need more than 8 for gaming
If you really only need 16+ if you are running an ESXi cluster at home.
thanks for the list all

some other 'future proofing' things to consider:
what kind of DDR is the 16gb?
what's your processor like?
