Well that's my two cents, and yes I've got a char leveled up all the way and I know about endgame PvP and how "rewarding" it is, but I just wanna give my two cents on this, cross my fingers, and hope EQ Next doesn't provide a single player mode for its players like GW2 does.
I hate to burst your bubble ....but after working for 40-60 hours a week in the real word I have 0 interest in meeting and playing with you in my free time. I'm not interested in your life ,your wife or your dog ...I don't care what country or town you live in or where you come from ...I don't care to socialize or talk politics or religion with you .
See I'm done playing games where my enjoyment depends on someone outside of my guild and circle of friends .....don't get it wrong I'm always interested in meeting new folks but it will be a cold day in hell when I play a game that forces me to take anyone else along that might spoil my fun .
I find running solo to be as boring as hell ...but the thought of being force grouped is the final straw . The fact that you don't socialize or meet new folks in GW2 is your own fault not the games . If you have a hard time meeting and running with folks in GW2 where most encounters are fairly simple, what are the odds of you coming out of the blue and hooking up with 8 or 9 folks that have to depend on you to succeed ?
Sorry Bud , I'm all for making a game tough and challenging but I'm not playing a game that forces me to take you along !!
Skyrim is a much better game if you want to play solo. I quit GW2 after about level 30 because it felt like nothing but a sub par single player game. I agree with the OPs opinion.
Ya they have games for people like you badog, they are called single player games. Go try one. Oh that's right you don't want to actually work with others in the game you just want to be near them...............
Okay thanks for the tip I'll assume you're talking to me but just can't spell .... I guess you missed the point where I said I'm not interested in running solo ( that's what boring as hell means to me )...but you have without a doubt proved my point that forced grouping brings an undesirable element into the mix .
You don't want to group with strangers. You don't want to play solo. You do, however, group with your circle of friends and/or guild.
Okay, then, a game requiring grouping should not be an issue for you. You already group with your friends and guild. Your grouping behavior does not get changed.
So, what is your High Horse again?
Oh, right, nothing but the ability to flame a thread.
no, i think it is you who doesn't understand.....
what changes is that... when his friends are not on.. he cannot play unless he plays with those he doesn't want to play with... in gw2 he can still find enjoyment even if no one else is online.
Switch to Tarnished Coast! People adventure with me all the time, not because they have to but just because we want to! It's a lot of fun, I strike up random conversations with people and sometimes random RP even. And then we tend to continue to find other events together and follow which way the wind blows!
I used to be on Jade Quarry myself and it is definitely a more anti-social server. People like to have fun on TC though =D

Ya, I like playing that way. Exploring is much more fun than trying to finish all the completion points in an area. It's great just to head out and run across events, and do a little here and there!
Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.
The days of being forced to group in order to level up are gone and are never coming back, not in any game.
Does anyone other than you miss them? Sure, there are a bunch of people on these forums that do. But it's the tiniest of niches in the grand scheme of things; hence, no such games.

I think a huge difference between GW2 and, for example, WoW, is the non-competitive PvE vs the competitive PvE aspects. In GW2 you can get in on a Champion fight and you're automatically "with" everyone else. You're working together, and when the fight is done you all get the rewards. No mob-tagging, no loot rolls, just simply work with everyone around you and have at it. In WoW you'd have to hopefully be the first one to hit the mob to have any hope at all of getting the loot. More often than not people simply wouldn't help you hoping you'd die so they could tag it and get the loot instead. You were more "forced" to group because of the competition with everyone else, hoping your party got first hit in and knowing that most likely your party would be the only ones on the fight if you did.
Then for normal leveling you'd see the opposite in the WoW case, for the most part you simply solo the whole leveling path until you get to the gated raid content and single lane path of progression. GW2 actually doesn't change how you're forced to play at 80... PvE remains non-competitive and the whole world remains open and viable. Group if you wish, nothing forced. You do have dungeons which you need to group for but they're not required to progress, it's your choice and not a single lane highway you're being shunted down.
Last night, with the Champion loot changes, my WvW guild spent a couple hours together farming Champions on Orr. We had two or three groups running and simply had a lot of fun. We had the option to group and chose to do so. Hardly the "single player MMO" some would like to have you believe. But then again... single players were welcome to join in with us on the fights and they also were rewarded, so you can, if you wish, play a lot of it as a solo player. It's a nice blend.
The game was only multiplayer by your definition for the first 72 hours. Powerleveling with your friends and running into other friends and people you've never met before along the way, and you admired the fact that they kept up with you. Eventually bonds were made and together you and the first 19 people on your server to hit 80 scored your servers first clear on Arah.
Besides that moment, pretty much a boring grind for chivements. But $50 for 72 hours of enjoyment, sure I'd do it again.
AHH - they changed that after 72 hours and you can't really power level unless there is special events, like going on now. The mobs go after the lowest player level and you would be one shotted by most of them, if you are a lower level.
See, again, the point is you DON'T have to do acheivements, if you don't want to. It is up to you what to do in the game. It is not a tread mill game, where you go from point A to B to C to D to E.
I feel the exact same way, OP. I have a lv 35 Warrior and I'm trying to get to 80 so I can join my guildmates in WvW and various other stuff, but for the life of me I can't find other people to play with.
I've tried using map chat but no one responds, and even if I do see someone it's not a very social encounter. I like this game, I do, but it's destroyed any need to be social, because it's destroyed the requirement to be in a group. You can do anything in this game solo, because even if there are other people around, it doesn't matter. Everyone gets rewarded equally. Because of this, grouping suffers, and ultimately I feel like everyone just doesn't want to group up. It's sad, really. Because I feel like this game truly shines when people group up.

Are you sure you actually play GW2? I mean... when you consider the fact that you're up-leveled in WvW to 80 so there's no excuse to not be there with your guildies (and leveling up at the same time) is seems... odd. You'd know this if you played. While it's true you're not as effective as an 80 in exotics you're still effective and can really get to learn your profession as you develop.

You can do any mmorpg to level cap on your own! WoW, Rift, SWToR, and many more. It's up to you to ask to join a group if the lack of one is upsetting. You say there is no need to be social? Well, then why be social if not just to adventure together? Ask in game if anyone wants to join you and there will be others just like you that want to explore together.
Why wait till 80 to do WvW? Just curious.

Regarding both of your posts: I should have been clearer. I've brushed with WvW before, and I am very much aware that it levels you up, and also grants you experience for participating. I was actually going to try it out soon, but I've been busy lately. It DOES, however, have something to do with the gear issue, as mentioned in the first post.
In regards to the second post: I have found groups before, finding people has never been a problem. I was doing an event in an area and kept wiping, and after asking for help and getting no response, I gave up. So that was most likely just my situation.
I guess I'm just more disappointed that the areas I do hearts in aren't as busy as the size and content suggests they should be. With the recent update to the champion monsters, hopefully that changes.
I long for the days when you had to group to level too. IMO MMORPGs are all about grouping - it's the one thing that's special and unique about them. Back in the day we all grouped every day and we loved it. People who didn't want that just didn't play - as it should be.
If you want to solo mostly or exclusively, WHY, why play massively multiplayer games? For the quality chat? /vomit To impress the doods around you with how stupidly you can name your avatar? /projectilevomit
Somewhere devs started smoking crack and decided to try to lure in players not really suited to MMORPGs and started spending years and millions on tons of stupidly easy solo content that people vaporize in days/weeks. Then they wonder why they have nice launch numbers that start to dramatically taper after a couple months (coincidentally the same amount of time it takes a player to either do all solo content and move on or for vets to obliterate solo content and whatever joke of an endgame exists). Then they're F2P and trying to grab cash with a game they and their players no longer care about, since F2P is utter trash.
GW2 takes it further and is really a single player game, or massively single player game. It's great if you're confused and want to solo in MMORPGs.
GW2 is a good game for what it is, but I don't consider it an MMORPG.
You also will NEVER have quality grouping in a game like GW2. Five soloists sharing a chat and instance isn't a group.
TESO is going to be the same way.
It's very likely that EQNext is also going to be the same way (and an insult to "EverQuest" in doing so and in so many other ways, since EQ is the freakin' godfather of this genre...not that SOE had much to do with EQ other than buying and continuing it, SOE is actually pretty inept when it comes to MMORPGs and is about to prove it again with the EQN travesty).
So basically...why play GW2 if you want a more typical and higher quality MMORPG experience? We know what kind of game it is, and it's not ever going to change because it just lacks the game mechanics at the core to ever be a more typical group-oriented MMORPG.
Premium MMORPGs do not feature built-in cheating via cash for gold pay 2 win. PLAY to win or don't play.

Hah, I agree completely. Why don't these guys just go back to their consoles? These money hungry devs do whatever it takes to lure in the console crowd, the fps crowd, the wow kids, and super casuals and have watered down the mmo industry so it caters to them. Every single game that comes out its the same mob of wow kids pushing the same failed mechanics onto the next big mmo. I think these failed mechanics had one success and it was wow. Now every game tries to duplicate this crap and please/cater the above mentioned crowd of non-mmorpg gamers. These guys don't belong in this genre. Can't wait for the new Xbox and PS4 to come out so they go back to their consoles and stay out of our MMO's.
