It is primarily a DoT management based damage dealer, it has debuffs (STR/DEX/MND/INT down), and the three Egi's have different roles (Titan can tank, Garuda can extend DoT's and deal AOE damage, Ifrit deals damage and has damage spikes).

Summoner is about managing your Egi (obviously) but DoT damage revolves around stacking, getting bonuses to certain spells the more DoT's you have up, and has an ability to spread DoT to nearby mobs.

Also uses the Aetherflow mechanic of Arcanist/Scholar (MP regen stacks applied to self needs to be active for certain abilities)

So do you automatically get an Egi if you go from arcanist to summoner?

Do you know if there will be any summons that behave like the summons in the single player games? That just show up do something and leave.

It's doubtful at this point, but not entirely unlikely.

Later Final Fantasy games have the summons stick around and fight, also this game is taking a lot of ideas from other RPG's and online games, Summoner will be a bit more like a traditional pet class.

That's what I was afraid of. I will still probably try it out but I prefer the epic feel of summons instead of having it as a pet walking around with you everywhere. Are there any pics on these pets?

No. The other class that an Arcanist changes to is the Scholar. They have the healing "summons"(pets).

Corect. The Arcanist, which is a pet class, summons the carbuncle. There are several types of carbuncles. The Arcanist can changed into a Summoner and/or Scholar. The Summoner is DPS and the Scholar is the only other healer class in the game other than Conjurer/Whitemage.

Arcanist Splits off into two jobs Summoner and Scholar, As stated earlier Summoner Handles DoT and Scholar handles HoTs

Arcanist gets The familar Carbuncle, Summoner gets their Egi's which barrow power from the Avatars, and Scholar gets Fairys lol =)

Why don't the two of you watch the Live letter VIII, they have summoner footage.  You can control the summons directly, issue commands, they can run on their own AI it shows off all of it.

    posted it above.

An ability list (similar to the one someone posted above):

    http://ffxiv.consolegameswiki.com/wiki/Summoner

Summoners grow from Arcanists, so they will have all their abilities and traits too:

and, you'll have to level Thaumaturge to a certain point to unlock the job, and a can draw certain abilities from it (which ones exactly I am not sure - but don't expect to get much beyond level 26):

We do not know this. Yoshi said that other summons will be released when level cap is raised, which should happen within 5 months of release. One of which should be Alexander, who has been known to have healing abilities.

I'm kinda sad charbuncle will essentially be limited to leveling and solo content only as he looks so cool!

I had to jump here, there will be no 1 ability primal for summoner that goes in hit and leave, BUT in different letters before, yoshida mentioned that there will be that sort of thing in a sense you need to kill the primal in fate, and you will get an item that you will have a limited time to use it before it vanish. the FC that gets it , can use it later on world boss/raid once, where the full version appear and does his ability and leave. then he will spawn again later and you need to kill him again.

not only that, if any of the primals get summoned, you will see weather change so everyone in the server knows that he was summoned.

what we do not know yet, if the summoner will be the only job able to summon the full version of the primal.

Would be nice to see the one attack only summon for the Summoner Limit Break, collect them by fighting them.
