Best Parts of MMO's On the Current Market

While waiting for FFXIV to release, I decided to go back to SWTOR and play it during the downtime.   I am not a fan of the F2P/Cash Shop model so I decided to just stick to story quests.

Well, I just did the first and second part of a quest chain that I Absolutely loved.  It's the long quest chain on how to obtain a new companion HK-51.

I just finished the part where you're on a ship with crew members that are dead.  You're in the dark and have to use a flashlight of sorts to find clues and progress.  It's part mystery, part platforming and A LOT of fun.

After finishing this quest chain.... i got to thinking, I bet there are a lot of people who may not like a certain mmo, but may like specific content within the mmo.

Can you guys give me some examples of specific content within mmos that you loved?  I'm not talking about game systems, or action combat vs. tab targeting, quest hubs or whatever.

I'm talking about SPECIFIC quests, jumping puzzles, raid encounter, story arc.... that you remember to this day.  Another example is a long jumping puzzle i did in Azure starting region for GW2.  It took me 3 hours but I did and just loved it along the way.

I always remember when I first played Rift. I was scouting the boundaries of the map far off the beaten path when an object amongst some trees caught my attention. Lo and behold I discovered my first Cairn and within I scored an awesome piece of epic gear!

After that I was addicted to the chase and it was great fun exploring the whole map in every zone looking for all the hidden cairns and puzzles. Brilliant.

Sadly it seems if you try to do this in all MMOs I have played lately you will encounter nothing but invisible walls...

DnD NeverWinter has the most feutures I would love to see in future MMOs they really really out did themselves but there are alot of negatives as well.

    1. Player Created Content -

People actually create their own stories and quests and other players can do it as well. the potential for this is almost limitless. You would never run out of things to do in game. Some guys put out weekly content and it really becomes a 'living story'

    2. In game Voice CHat - This one was super amazing. You can party up with guys and talk to them. Less Typing More talking and getting the job done alot easier. As long as your in a party you can voice chat. I know WoW has/had voice chat in the game before but it was really shit (at least when I was playing it).

    3. Scalable Graphic Settings - This one was my favorite. You don't have to toggle the options individually thinking which particular option would increase ur FPS. There is simple a Scale buttong from Performance->Quality and adjust it as how you see fit. Obviously advanced graphics options are there as well. I got my friends with bad computers to play this game. THE

MASSIVE BADs ABOUT THIS GAME IS...........

    1. It's instanced. And it's not really open world. I can;t stand instanced MMOs.

    2. PvP is crap

The Secret World-   I really liked the puzzle quests in this one, it was sometimes hard not to just go google the answer, especially since they had google built into the game, but some of them were great, reminded me that FUNCOM once built good single player games...that one where you actually had to be dead to advance it was an interesting twist.

Lord of The Rings- I really liked the difference in starting areas, the hobbit area felt like a hobbit area and the dwarf area felt like a dwarf area...so many games just paste races on the game and then ignore them but by the time you left the area you felt like you had helped your starting race and had a bunch of titles to prove it...unless you went somewhere else which I liked they gave you that option. I actually still jump in this game the landscape and world are nice.

Age of Wushu- The street chases in a city while you are chasing/being chased through a crowd of players going about their business was something I had never experienced before and drove home that crouching tiger type feeling, really made it different from other MMO's....the actual experience is better than the description, but running in alleyways jumping on and off roofs running up walls...a whole different dimension than every other games flat terrain.

EVE- Launching my high tier combat drones at someone as he engages a web on my mining barge....and then watching him try and run away when he realizes what he just latched on to before his ship explodes.

I deeply enjoyed the lore quests related to Miragul, Dartain, Al'Kabor, and of course the Duality in Everquest II.  In a game where there are so many quests that seem completely unrelated sometimes, those storylines really made you feel like you were amassing some kind of Esoteric knowledge that only small percentage of truly powerful people got to know.

I also enjoy both The Secret World, and Star Wars "The Old Republic" 's way of telling stories.  I know that it probably grates on the nerves of those who are more interested in racing their friends in levels to have to sit through these narratives, but for me, again, it makes those games more like games and less like questing or grinding treadmills.

I enjoyed the expansive world history provided by City of Heroes prior to the startup of that game.  It gave the community a ton of background from which to create their own stories and characters within the game and that, I believe, laid the foundation of what made that community so good.  Likewise Eve in this respect.  These games don't just thrust you into the world, they really give you a setting.

Mechanics-wise, Everquest (the original) was crazy in the way that if you said the right thing to an NPC you might get them to give you a quest.  I don't think that anyone has done that since, most likely because it was a reasonably difficult system to understand, but I still think it was cool and allowed for those more willing to investigate and explore to gain more knowledge than the random sit and pull grinder.

Finally.....The handling of Ice and Water.

ICE - In Everquest in the Coldain City and in Velketor's Labyrinth, in City of Heroes Faultline zones and others.  There's nothing like taking that one step too far and suddenly having that fear of impending doom as you slide closer to the edge of something.

WATER - Everquest, Champions Online, Guild Wars II, and most importantly Everquest II (where I actually lived, quested, and levelled under water for several levels as my own version of a water elemental (defiler class).  Water is always like a whole nother world that most people ignore unless they have to go there, but to an explorer or someone who just likes to get away from the ruckus sometimes, nothing is better than playing a little Jacques Cousteau once in a while.

I'm sure there are other things too, but these are the things that come to mind first and so I guess they are my favorites.

I don't think the other guys realy quite got it what the thread is about. Or at least i hope i got it correctly :)

The best part of an mmorpg, i got to say, it's the first time experience. That is why most people, including myself, switch games often. I remember my first lvls in the first game i played realy well.

    Lineage2

This was my first mmorpg i played. I remember when i saw the animation of wind blast, the first spell you get. i was wowed lol.

I remember when i was struggling with money to buy my next tier equipement and i didn't have no where near enough. Then i found i high lvl guy in the newb area, trying to buy mats from the players. I sold everything i had lol, i was rich.I was realy greatfull i found that guy because i could buy all my gear.  After a while of course i found out i was actualy tricked, what i sold was worth a lot more. Like double or triple. It's seem there was a thing, a practice to go in the newbs area to buy crafting materials cheap

I remember my first job change quest (class upgrade). I was the minimum lvl required as i couldn't wait. Every monster was red, higher lvl than me. I had no idea where to find npc, as i needed to fin all the elements to lend me their power. All i knew was their general location. I was runing thorugh high lvl enemies to reach my destination, which i didn't knew where that was lol. After hours and dying a lot i was realy happy with what i accomplished.

They were other quest as well, which were long and offer great reward which was fun the first time. But i did everything again later (with other character) and it was boring and a chore the 2nd time

    Silkroads

one thing i never will forget about silkroad

I was a noob hunter (like a policeman) exploring the area. I had no idea what hunter meant. I was only recently introduced to the system(it's preaty much free pvp). And so i found about 5-7 thiefs on the road. Oh fuck i was dead. But might as well put up a fight. I targeted a random guy among the thiefs. I used a skill with great cast time as opener, and i started spamming skills, but i was getting invalid target message. before i knew it The thiefs surounded me and killed me. I was exepecting this oh whell. Then i saw them ressing their comrade. The reason i was getting invalid target on my skills was because i one shotted the guy lol.  The reason for that wasn't because he was low lvl. it was because i was pshihical archer, and he was an int build mage, bassically with little hp. And so as the story goes. on. The guy was ressed, then he comes over to my dead body, and says "That will teach you a lesson" . Hahaha, i died laughing.

    Cabal

i liked the dungeon in this. They were fun as i felt like was plaing a minigame. The last boss, usualy had ultimates which one shooted you. So every dungeons had it's own strategy. Of course it got repetitive after a while

Another thing i remember was the skill system. I looked all over the guide to see how to build my character. They all recomand me to farm my skills at low lvl because it's cheaper. And so i did, especially because the high lvl tier skill looked realy great. After a while i was walking in the city when someone requested a duel. Well you probobly know how that is is. There is always some guy who wants to show off or other reasons he may have. But this time i accepted it. He was even 10 lvl above me. Lol i kicked his but. No really, i spanked him so bad that he would have reached the moon lol. Only then i realized that i overdid it. I was a mid lvl character which had end game skills. That is what the guide told me to do, but i also realized that mosty people don't actualy do that lol.

After farming that long i had burnout, and quit the game. years later i decided to enter the game to see what was what.

The skill system was changed. Now every lvl had a limit of what skills you can learn/farm. The only issue was that i was way above the limit lol. I felt like i was realy cheating now. No one in game with the same lvl as me couldn't possible have the same high lvl skills i had, except if they also returning player, or kept the char at low lvl to own in pvp.

There are a lot of games, if not all of them which had similar memories. These ones i remember the most vividly.

Thx for reading and hopefully it's on topic :)
